  • Mukhtaran Mai is interviewed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy at TEDxKarachi 2011
    About the Speaker
Mukhtaran Mai was no different from the other ordinary women of Muzaffar Garh district of Pakistan until she was struck by a horrible calamity that changed the course of her life. Instead of succumbing to the tradition of committing suicide after being gang raped, she stood up for herself and became a champion defender of women's rights and education through her Mukhtaran Mais Women Welfare Organisation in the southern region of Punjab Pakistan where women are victims of atrocities like which she had to suffer from.

Her struggle for justice and the courage and valor she displayed gained attention from not only local but also international media and institutions. The Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal for Bravery and Courage from the Pakistani Governement and The North-South Prize of the Council of Europe for contribution to Human Rights are amongst the most notable awards she received. In 2005, Glamour Magazine named her "Glamour Woman of the Year". The Laurentian University of Canada awarded an honourary doctorate degree to Mukhtaran Mai in 2010. Her autobiography has been translated in 23 languages and she has been praised by dignitaries like Laura Bush and the French foreign minister.

So much humility, grace, courage and faith in God even after such a torture and continued discrimination!
..and there's no propaganda, no hatred in her voice!!
her culprits will die of shame and their own families will spit at them!
..she is a true woman - embodiment of motherhood, love, forgiveness and a protector of children.. salutations to Mukhtaran Mai!

    • @shanxutube
      @shanxutube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For a society that does not know the difference between shame and honour, nothing like that would happen. The decay in the institutions and power structures of Pakistan are so deep, redemption seems remote. At the root of this is a tribal religion and culture. A country which was formed on a lie, does not have much hope. That said, bright spots and sparks like Mukhtaran Mai and her supporters do exist, but they are few and far between in the overall context of a nation!

It makes me so satisfied to learn that at least her parents were supportive. They wanted her to live. They pleaded her to live. Family support is the most important thing. Those who commit suicide eventually are the one who don't even get support from their own families. Infact they encourage them to either leave their family or commit suicide.

Excellent. The last words uttered are like a silver lining in the clouds. " Come, let us fight terrorism with divine intelligence." Wars had never and can never solve our problems. We are conscious beings and incarnation of Allah. We are born into ignorance so that we seek the light through wisdom. The obstructions on the path may become hurdles but these can be turned into stepping stones. May Allah help this divine soul to be a lamp of light for the woman of Pakistan and global community.

These beautiful words "GOD", "DEVATA", "ALLAH", "BHAGWAN", "上帝", "神", "الل" ,"ه", "Deus", "Dio", "בורא עולם" etc.I could have written in all languages possible practiced in today's date but its time consuming so let me just cut to the chase for you to answer my question in the end. So these beautiful words mentioned in the first line; in true sense mean "ALMIGHTY", "LOVE", "INNOCENCE" and we worship to the formless "GOOD SPIRIT" to find peace within us. These words are high placed in our minds and heart right from the beginning after having a conscious mind, we know its powerful because it allows us to feel peaceful, Natural and like a child(well protected in the womb) and if we forget "GOD" or "ALLAH" from our minds; we hear noises of sadness, Victory celebrations and at times we see misery all around us.
Now we are Humans we have loads of ambitions/Goals and expectations which are all leading to obtaining or possessing the EVIL called MONEY. We are born under many Labels/Religion/Category like namely Christian/Hindu/Jew/Muslim/Buddhism/Sikh, again within many Communities. Later we see Societies are present, Celebrities are made now and then. We have Caste system, We learn to discriminate depending upon your Skin color and Status; which is equally practiced by any ignorant Men, Woman or any other Sex people. Also there is a very stressed discrimination made towards Gay people, educated/uneducated Women(rich or poor), Transsexual etc. all of this we practice and follow in this WORLD as we live in the human world, dominated by humans only.
On the other side of the Coin there is Planet Earth which has other creatures/animals/Trees/water/Air or fire living innocently and die without any complaints, without having rules/regulations to follow. They worship too to the ALMIGHTY 'cause who doesn't love Peace : )it is by default in them(also present in humans) no Institutions of Religions required thou, 'cause they don't have to prove anything to the Earth or ALMIGHTY, they don't have to Pay any tax or money to anyone for living on Planet Earth.
Whom do you think the "ALMIGHTY" really wants to bestow their PEACE??
Does GOD, ALLAH, BHAGWAN, DIO, DEUS teach us to HATE??
Does GOD teach us to look down upon someone who's weak? of lower caste? who's not male? who has different Skin color than you? who's Gay? Transsexual?
Does GOD teach us to CUT/KILL/BLEED in the Name of Religion?
THEN WHY DO YOU SAY IN THE NAME OF RELIGION AND FOR GOD, ONE HAS TO BE PUNISHED OR KILLED?
    JUST REMEMBER FOLKS!
*** GOD INNOCENTLY GIVES YOU WHAT YOU GIVE OTHERS***
