    Well, according to the Greek mythology, Achilles was supposed to have been dipped into a pool of invincibility and held by his ankles; which is why they we're not invincible. So nothing should be able to penetrate his skin anywhere other than his ankles.
    (It has been discovered by replies that it was the River Styx he was dipped in and that there are other versions of the mythos that include invulnerable armor rather that the supernatural coating. The edits to the main post are only to correct grammar and spelling; in order to maintain the original intent of the post. Addressing 2:20:47 and onwards, that scene where Galadriel “trains” the men infuriated me to no end while watching it because it shows exactly how little the writers understand how military cohesion and leadership works. She basically belittles them for being rookies, says she’ll take on all of them at once in order to “teach them what it means to fight Orcs,” does little else but use her agility and skill to trip up the rookies while egging them on with their shortcomings. Anyone else remember in Game of Thrones when Jon was the best swordsman amongst the Crow recruits, and I think it was Commander Mormont or some other XO who warned him that simply beating his teammates over and over again without being constructive would lead to them hating him in the future, and that instead of just beating them Jon should actually help INSTRUCT them to fix their mistakes? And when Jon did this, it would be the sword skills he taught them that kept his closest friends alive all the way up until the final season?! THAT’S how you train your lessers. THAT’S what it means to be a leader.

    If i were writing Galadriel leading an army, it wouldn't be putting her up with foot soldiers and teaching them to gut... I would show her communicating with the armorers and smiths, planning for provisions with the merchants, fisherman and farmers... I'd show her cozying up to nobles to raise coin to build ships, siege equipment, and fund the war effort. Then I'd show her speaking to captain's and going over the travel plans and where the stops are, maybe establishing a spymaster who she communicates with to get information about where the enemy is now and what paths they can take.
    Or we can show her embarrassing some dudes in a fight that means nothing and provides no other information.

    For the 1/5 vs 1/25 thing, the answer is 1/5. The first choice could have been any of the ships, but for the second one to be the same ship it does have to be whichever one the first one already chose.
    Let me lay it out like this, perhaps it will help. If I ask “What are the odds that both of them choose ship #4?” then the odds are 1/25, as they both have a 1/5 chance of choosing ship #4. But if I ask “What are the odds of them choosing the same ship?” the odds are 1/5, as the specific ship that they both choose doesn’t matter. Therefore there are 5 scenarios in which they could both choose the same ship (they could both choose #1, both choose #2, etc.) out of 25 possibilities. So the probability is 5/25, or 1/5.

    On the point of "Numenor should probably have more ships," might I just say, the fleet they sent to fight Sauron was big enough that he surrendered because he knew that the entirety of Mordor, his Nazgul and all men he had conquered would not be enough to defeat them. Ponder on that. This was a better fortified and prepared Mordor than the one that we saw in the beginning of the Lord of the Rings. And Sauron knew, for a fact, he stood _zero_ odds against the ships the Numenorians sent.

      @@XraynPR I hate myself for even saying this but maybe, MAYBE there is still time to do that. All of what I said happened after the One Ring was first used, and in the show it hasn’t even been built yet.
      The way things went, Sauron helped Celebrimbor create the main 19 rings, powerful artifacts to manifest the weak influence elves had on the Unseen Realm into the real world (9 that fought against mortality for humans, 7 that manifested good economic luck for dwarves, 3 that helped purify and rejuvenate nature for the elves), and nobody knew he had created a sort of programming backdoor on them to force their users to obey the One Ring.
      Sauron eventually used the One Ring, expecting its power to turn every other ring bearer into a slave of his, but only the human ones actually worked. Dwarves turned decidedly evil and cruel through theirs, but not obedient to Sauron, and the 3 elvish ones didn’t even do that much. Once his betrayal was known, his plot to subtly control everything came down and he had to do it through war instead.
      This was the war the Numenorians eventually decided to join which lead to his surrender, only when so much of Middle Earth had been conquered that their colonies started to be threatened.
      The show has already fucked almost every possibility of any of this happening but there is still SOME chance we will see Middle Earth fall to the war with Sauron and Numenor decide to intervene in the future. But with the starter we had, hopes aren’t even low, they’re damn negative =(

    So, to help explain the chances on the whole meet-on-the-same-boat situation. First, let's make clear what we are trying to figure out. There are 5 ships, ship A through ship E, and 2 people who will randomly pick one of the ships. Each ship has an equal chance to be chosen, so 1 in 5. What are the odds both of them chose the same ship? First, how many possibilities are there? Well, they can both pick ship A, let's call that possibility AA. The first can choose ship A, then the second can choose ship B, or AB. This gives us 5 * 5 = 25 possibilities, laid out below:
    AA, AB, AC, AD, AE
    BA, BB, BC, BD, BE
    CA, CB, CC, CD, CE
    DA, DB, DC, DD, DE
    EA, EB, EC, ED, EE
    Now the question was: What are the odds both of them chose the same ship? That are our criteria for a success. But they can meet on any ship. So not just AA is a success, but also BB, CC, DD and EE. Which gives us 5 successes with 25 possibilities. Or a 5 in 25 chance, or a 1 in 5 chance.

    It’s funny being a scientist who deals with probability and statistics a lot to hear the argument about probability at 4:08:00.
    For the record, Fringy and Disparu were right. The probability of one person choosing the same ship as another person takes the choice of the prior person as a given. It is not factored into the probability of the other person’s choice because the two choices are independent, so when the second person makes their choice, only the probability at the moment of their choice matters. It’s like how if you roll a die and get a 1 seven times in a row, the probability of the next roll being a 1 is still 1/6, even if the probability of getting eight 1s in a row is 1/(6^8).
    Now, if only one of the ships had oil on it, and the two people happened to both choose that single ship out of the five, then the choice the first person makes actually does matter. They cease to be independent, because the first choice has to pick a particular ship instead of any ship.
    Independence is a tricky concept, the confusion is understandable.

    2:19:00 "How high is lieutenant?"
    I'm glad someone's finally asking this question in particular.
    The thing is, it's not about specifically just how high the rank is, the issue is that, in the ground forces, lieutenant is going to be the lowest Commissioned Officer rank. That means you don't get promoted to lieutenant, you get officer training/officer school and start as a lieutenant. If this was ground forces ranks, which makes sense since the training here is basic training and not command training, then these guys should be promoted to LCpl/Corporal/Specialist/Sergeant/Master Sergeant/Other high-rank-sounding-Sergeant-Title.
    But let's just say a CO can be promoted by winning a swordfight... okay. Since this is Numenor, then they might be using naval terms. That puts Lieutenant above Ensign, so these could be officer cadets who will be made Ensign, but the one who wins the fight starts as a Lieutenant. Now we have to ask the question as to why you're training officers in swordfighting, and judging them on that, instead of leadership abilities or strategy, just like Rag's points out.

    • @christophersmith8316
      @christophersmith8316 ปีที่แล้ว

      In very old days there were few officers in a unit, the commander was a Captain, he had a Lieutenant as a second in command and there were Sargeants leading subunits.

    • @lordvarrax5060
      @lordvarrax5060 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This also depends on the rank structure being used- Lieutenant in Medieval times could actually be a very high rank, equivalent to a General officer today. In Lord of the Rings, the second in command of an army is sometimes referred to as a Lieutenant.
      Also “Sergeant” had a different meaning in Medieval armies- “sergeants” was how one referred to full-time troops in the direct employ of the nobility. They were distinguished from levied troops who were essentially conscripted soldiers. The modern rank of sergeant doesn’t really have a consistent Medieval equivalent, as units were basically always led by officers (knights and the nobility).

    • @afelias
      @afelias 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lordvarrax5060 I don't think Lieutenant can ever be a high rank.
      a) The ranks are translated already for the audience and so they are the modern depictions of rank, because why would Numenor linguistically develop the similar term lieutenant?
      b) If we take the word at its face, lieutenant is given "tenancy in lieu of the captain" or as the Brits pronounce it as left-tenant, the left-tenant is "left in command of the platoon." It has always meant "junior officer" underneath the captain, the "true leader" of the ship, or of the platoon. That's also why there are things like Lieutenant Colonels, or other positions that start with Lieutenant; they are always officers under other officers. Probably even with the history of the platoon and the company coming from firing in ranks, you would probably not leave overall command to a lieutenant.
      c) But overall even with medieval history, or 19th century warfare history, the concept of the lieutenant being an officer will still enforce that the lieutenant is essentially a lower-rung officer, but an officer nonetheless. A sort of minor nobility but also minor responsibility position.

    • @lordvarrax5060
      @lordvarrax5060 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@afelias
      a) Tolkien specifically refers to Gothmog as the “Lieutenant or Morgul”, and shows that he’s second in command of the armies of Mordor at Pelennor. I believe he also refers to others in similar positions but I can’t recall off the top of my head. Hence, “Lieutenant” as the second in command of a whole army already exists in Middle Earth.
      b) Richard, Duke of York held the title of “Lieutenant of France” during the Hundred Years war, and later also held the title of “Lieutenant of Ireland”. This was a position that basically granted him power over all English activity in the country. You could see it as a predecessor to the more modern term of “Lieutenant General”, but it remains that it was the title that he was granted, and how his office was referred to. I could probably find other examples of similar titles but that’s one I can think of off the top of my head.
      c) Definitely agree, once the term Lieutenant became standardized in its usage at around the end of the Medieval period/the beginning of the Renaissance period that was what it meant. But prior to that it did have different meanings- if there’s one thing I’ve learned from studying the Medieval period, it’s that one word could have numerous (and sometimes very different) meanings depending on what region, time, and even specific social context it was being used in.

    So, Isildur has, at every opportunity, shown a complete lack of discipline, even to the point of deliberate sabotage. Even when he saves Pharazon's son, the excuse Isildur gives him makes it sound like they were at the harbor separately...and Isildur wasn't in the "fishing skiff" with him...so what was known saboteur Isildur doing at a harbor...where two ships were just sabotaged? Ah, but I forgot. "One of the casks must have gone up." Because oil or wine are both known for being so unstable. Were they casks of nitroglycerin?
    Now, suppose his son asks Pharazon to put Isildur into the expedition as a reward and partly to hush things up, and the people who actually know him distrust him enough to only trust him with mucking the stables. Somehow Isildur gets in Miriel's good graces on the voyage and is put in her guard. Well, they couldn't trust him to be left with the boats. Ships, sorry, ships!
    Then they are engaged in serious battle and little ki- um, Isildur starts getting fidgety and impatient and generally displaying his complete lack of necessary soldierly discipline. Yet the *field commander's* response to this IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE is to basically say, "Okay, you're ungrounded. Go play with the other ki- um, go...go ahead and join the battle."
    Also, do they realize that by giving him that scene with Miriel, they low-key dissed Miriel by having Isildur impatient at being "sent away with the women"? Ah, wait. Maybe Miriel was expecting such an undisciplined hooligan to get himself killed and sending him in was her punishment for his misogynistic attitude.

    The odd thing with the Numenorean armours is that you can clearly tell that the costume designer clearly overthought their design, tying the deisgn way too hard into the maritime aspect of Numenorean society while also trying to fit it into a sort of "predecessor design" to Gondors plate armours. Like so many aspects of this show, it just frustrates me, with how easy they could have fixed it or at least or make it look less bad, and it's even on screen: Halbrands armour is basically the same type of lamellar armour, but the individual scales are blank metal. That would have made it so much better instead of the weird white stuff.

    Good on Fringy and Disparu for not backing down on the probability argument. It truly was a variation on a fundamental conundrum people have when first learning how to handle probabilities mathematically, which is the tendency to double up conditions that are in fact the same condition just from different perspectives, but no differentiation of the test is present. If Rags and LittlePlatoon wanted their 1/25 chance, an example of how that might happen would be if there were 5 places on each ship that could be hiding spots, only one of which was near the exploding barrels. Then the probability becomes 1/5 chance the correct ship is picked * 1/5 chance the hiding place picked was near the barrels. Then it could be a 1/25 scenario. That said, what they later talked about is true too, that through utter contrivance, there are many other unlikely probabilities unexplored apart from the correct ship probability that must have come true to allow this dumb scene to happen.

    4:10:00 IDK if they come back to this because I haven't finished, but this portion of conversation is a bit maddening. FRINGY IS CORRECT. You roll to see where the first guy is placed, but that doesn't affect the odds at all. It just determines the starting/control condition. It doesn't matter what his placement is, just that he has a placement. It's then 1-in-5 that the second guy chooses the same ship as the first guy. The ONLY way it multiplies is if it matters which ship the first guy is on. As in, there's a specific target ship - the captain's ship or the only ship with explosives or something and it's unclear which one it is, but they need to end up on it. As presented, it doesn't matter what ship they're on, just that they're on the same ship. So, it's 1-in-5.
    Further, going by MauLer's added clarification that the first guy could be on either of the two ships (they don't need to be on the same ship, they just both need to be on an exploding ship), that just makes it even more likely that the second guy will choose the "correct" ship because there are now two "correct" ships. The odds are now 2-in-5. In other words, it went from 20% chance to 40%.
    Basically, I would say that the odds aren't strong, but they're not terribly weak just based on these parameters until other factors are added in (such as timing).

Either that or look at the problem as though each ship has two slots to fill and what are the odds that both are filled. That would be 1 out of 5 times 1 out of 5 for each of the five ships. Therefore 5/25 which is 1 out of 5!

    • @FlyingNinjaish
      @FlyingNinjaish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That varied heavily between forces and eras - the Marian legions had only two attendants and one pack mule per eight fighting men, for example. An early modern army would need a great many extra pack animals for the siege train, but the massive growth in infantry forces back to the sizes claimed in ancient times and the reduction of the role of cavalry (at least in western Europe) meant the number of horses didn't grow as much as might be expected. Certinly, there was nothing like the extreme ratio the Mongols had.

      The impervious skin is a later legend. In the Iliad, Achilles while sulking in his tent "on strike" lends his armor to his friend Patroclus, who goes on a rampage but is eventually killed in action and the armor stolen. Achilles burns for revenge but as to ask his mother to beg the Gods to give him a new outfit so he can fight. He does and kills Hector, and desecrates the body but his rage dies when King Priam sneaks out of town to beg him to let him bury his son. He gives back the body and loads the kings with gifts in the most memorable part of the poem to ancient authors. So in an EFAP way, if Achilles was invulnerable, why not go out with heel cap armor alone? Why does he need a suit?

    So the thing with the CGI extras. It's bad that we notice it so obviously. When Peter Jackson used CGI for his massive-scale battles, everyone was expected to look more or less the same because they'd all be among a couple of factions that- in a massive battle like that -it would be necessary to tell friend from foe apart quickly in all the chaos. All the humans wore similar armor, all the elves wore similar armor, all the orcs more or less wore the same kind of gear. But because of the diverse nature of this crowd, how close we are to them to make out clear details and that really there isn't that many here to gather so the repeat pattern is a lot more obvious, it all just seems extremely lazy by comparison.
    Training scene with Warrior Galadriel reminds me of like... how you write a character you think is cool when you're like 12-13. When you're an adult, you're supposed to realize how lame and nonsensical that is and actually write something better, especially if you do it for a living.

    If I remember correctly, the ending to inception can only make sense if the top were to fall. If the top were to remain spinning, then I believe that means DiCaprio is still dreaming. But the only element of his character is that his girlfriend killed herself because she thought that 'real life' as DiCaprio knew it was actually a dream. So if the top remains spinning at the end of the film, that would mean that he was actually in a dream, and his girlfriend isn't dead. Surely his girlfriend would have woken him up if when she died, she actually just woke up to 'real life.'
    Haven't seen Inception in years, so I would love to see an Inception EFAP movies. I'm convinced that that film does not hold up.

    • @berserkasaurusrex4233
      @berserkasaurusrex4233 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It holds up pretty well, though Ellen Page being there sort of distracts you when you consider all of her mental issues in real life. I do like how when the wife kills herself, they have her somehow jumping out of a window in the opposite building, adding a sort of dream-like quality of spatial incongruity to the scene. The issue with the spinning top at the end is that DiCaprio just got trapped in his own subconscious trying to find Ken Watanabe who died in the upper layer of dream, and might just be dreaming that he succeeded and got to go home again, not that he was always in a dream the entire film.
      Though the best part of "Inception" is realizing that it's a knockoff of a DuckTale's comic from the early 2000's where the Beagle Boys use a small device to enter Scrooge's dreams and try to steal the combination to his vault. It even has a dead girlfriend haunting Scrooge's dreams.

      After the fifth full viewing, I am confident that we are seeing Cobb altering his reality to match his deepest desire (to be with his kids), lost in his subconscious. He’s aware that it was a likely possibility, but a risk he had to take since if Saito dies he’ll be arrested at the airport. The main clue for me isn’t even the top. It’s the transitions from scene to scene. How everything seems to skip from one place to the next, almost bewildered about how he got there, until he arrives at the family home where he last saw them. It’s almost habit at this point to check if he’s in reality, but the top isn’t his check. It’s his wedding ring. Using the top is symbolic, but utterly useless to determine if he’s in the dream because the properties of the top were fabricated by him to trick Mal into leaving the dream world. Whether the top falls or keeps spinning is irrelevant. It’s a red herring to distract the viewer. Not that it matters because as soon as he hears his children’s voices he ignores the top and runs to them. I think top also serves as something for the camera to focus on, because the film deliberately doesn’t want to show us a clear image of him with the kids, that most of the audience will attribute importance to and worthy of holding the camera.
      Mal tried to convince him that what was “real” or a “dream” didn’t matter, because what mattered is that they would be happy together. That’s the mindset he succumbs to at the end of the film, when he realizes that Saito is dead and he’ll lose everything if he surfaces with everyone else. It’s not a conscious choice he makes, but rather something he allows himself to forget.

    First guy rolls a one, second guy has to roll a one.
    First guy rolls a two, second guy has to roll a two now.
    And so on.
    Like this we would get 25 possible combinations out of which 5 are "hits" where both choose the same ship. Which adds up to 5/25=1/5. Which shows the first roll doesn't really matter, because the only "chance" is for the second roll to match the first.

    In real life guilds, in order to graduate from journeyman status and become a master craftsman, you had to create an object and present it to the guild leadership for approval as proof of your skills. This is where we get the term "masterpiece" - the piece you craft to become a master. So perhaps Pharazon's favor was simply to get him an audience to demonstrate his skills. Basically, even if he has pissed off the guild members, if he's got the skills, they are probably going to want to coopt him and have him paying dues, rather than working in the black market as competition to undercut them. It's one thing to say "get the F off our island" to some homeless castaway, but when he has the patronage of the top politician in Numenor, you can look past the reasons to be annoyed at him in order to get both his skills and his connections at court on your team.
    Another thing is that the guild crest is not your membership credentials, but a pass to use the guild forges. So when he swipes the crest in a prior episode, he wasn't being so stupid as to think he can bluff his way as a member of the guild, but rather he could present the crest as evidence that guildsman gave him permission to use the forge, and then work his way in. So in the scene here, where he is working the forge with a crest, he could, as the panel suggests, be working on his application masterpiece, and is wearing the crest just for this job, that is, it signifies he has permission to make the attempt, not that he is a guild member yet.
    Really, when you get right down to it, his major crime was wanting REALLY BADLY to get into the guild. It's not like he was setting up shop as an independent.
    All of this, BTW, is not to defend the show, because I am not being paid to come up with this stuff, they are, and it is their job to make all this explicit to the audience, instead of relying on the audience to headcanon it all up.

      No, to pick the same ship (assuming all other variables are ignored like which ship is closer etc.), each INDEPENDENT variable (isildur and kemen) would choose independently with 1/5 odds. Together, 1/25 minus the overlap, which for this example doesn't exist unless you bend over backwards. It's like saying that galadriel finding halbrand on the ocean is 1 out of 1 because he has the only ship - don't ignore the fact that they have to be in the same space and time, reducing the odds DRAMATICALLY.
