- A teaching we receive time and time again from our teaching monk is about giving and generosity.
Giving is the 2nd pillar of buddhism after precepts and before meditation. This kind of giving is the kind where you give from a pure heart and without expectations of anything in return. You give because it’s the right thing to do. When others are going through a difficult time, you step up to the plate. This is the lesson we were taught today.
Like many people around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic impacted Papae, a small village in Northern Thailand. The economy took a plunge and it forced many locals to lose their jobs. To show their gratitude and support for the community, the monks at the Papae Meditation Retreat decided to take matters into their own hands. First, they made an offering of a Buddha statue to the local temple. This tradition involved monks securing the Buddha statue onto a platform and they parading it into the city while performing a sacred chant. Second, they offered dried goods and drinks for the villagers. And lastly, they took to the streets and made home visits to the elderly who were not able to attend the ceremony.

Crying my eyes out. I know that often monks go on blood drives and donate blood en masse. When I've donated blood - I always recited mantras with the hope that whoever receives my blood will awaken their own Buddha potential too.

@@79rosalee there's taking in giving. But most of the time we ignore that taking that's why mostly people are hesitant in giving. And the taking is that you get to be a better person, you feel a sense of peace by helping others, it's like you've contributed something to this world. If your very life becomes a giving. You'll live a fulfilling life that's for sure.

This is my first time seeing Buddhist monks giving to the community. It has been about compassion & giving without expectations, but usually we may see it done more as the monks give in teachings & in in spiritual support, and villagers giving to the monks. This is a humbling symbiotic relationship.

I'm in the U.S Military and was briefly deployed in Thailand to train with the Royal Thai Marine Corps. All the guys I met did 2 years of Buddhist seminary before their military service. My late mother taught me as a child that it is better to give than to receive. I try to go to Myanmar once a year, and while there it gives me the utmost pleasure to give those less fortunate than myself. In Buddhism one is taught that Lord Buddha will grant you many blessings, not just for giving those in need, but to look after your parents, especially the mother. This, I did and she passed away peacefully. My life since has been blessed in many ways. My advice is always give to those in need, and believe me it comes back many folds. True.
I always claim that the Far East is spiritualistic while in the Western world they are materialistic. True.
