I kinda liked the Hegel H190 on my B&W Nautilus 805´s (but not more than the system I already had) and it did give me a real sense that moving up the line might make me pretty happy. It had a ease/smoothness, that some people say come from "overdamped" amplifers, which I think I could get used to living with. The Hegel H90 60w on the other hand sounded slightly dull, graining and unresolving and like any other amp unequiped to drive the those power hungry speakers, excibited frequency anomalities at low listening volumes (where I do all my listening, sorry). Contrast that with something like the Exposure 2510 at 75w and a low damping factor of about 40 which drives those speaker like a champ and sounds full and resolving from the first turn of the volume knob (also more awake, without resorting to party trick like overly emphasised leading edge). The H90 was generally promoted and reviewed as something that could drive tricky loads desipte it's low wattage rating, just goes to show you have to try things it in your system! Really looking forward to the Electa Amator review :-)

I liked it so very much that I want to upgrade to whatever replaces the current H390 when it comes out. It's that good! One thing you may have forgotten to mention Jay is that Hegel has been promising to provide their integrates with a firmware update to make them a Roon end point, but so far nothing came out of it.

@@HegelMusicSystem It would be indeed great if the Roon Ready feature came to fruition within current gen products, but at this point I kind of expect it to be implemented only in future models. That aside, your integrates still offer an incredibly great value, far better than many other companies. Aside from my daily dose of H120, I've only had the opportunity to hear the H390, and I'd go as far as to say that the H390's amplification alone is worth the cost of the unit. Keep it awesome!

Jay, thanks for video. Originally had kef r3 with hegel rost. First impressions was great, but in the end I have sold hegel. My main issues are- amp has a sweetspot volume, where amp start shine. It was around 45-60% of volume which gets loud and uncomfortable. On less volume- there is no sound imho. Other reason is kef r3, I think rost would be enough for them, but not. I have prepay for michi x3, see how it works. Overall hegel is good but it’s depends. Max

I have recently demo the H390 with Sonus Faber Lumina series. To me the H390 with Sonus Faber is a good combo. The sonically rich Sonus give just the right amount of musicality when paired with the clinically sounding Hegel. However at the H390’s price point I won’t choose Hegal because subjectively it didn’t engage me. Luxman would be my next choice if someone is going for that clinical / hi-fi for hi-fi’s sake kind of sound. I haven’t heard the H190 yet but if it has the same balance and naturality that would be a great buy at that price range.

I don't know about current products but when I decided to buy the Hegel H100 I compared to MF M6i which is also great and similar price. The M6i sounded very powerful, detailed and dynamic with great soundstage. Lots of fireworks. Great addition to a HT system too. But as mentioned on this video as well, what was the decider for me was the tonality, finesse and naturalness of the Hegel. Plus it sounds also very dynamic with large soundstage. If you have the chance try to audition either way cause it's a personal preference at the end.

    • @nc3419

I have a hegel h160. I tried a MF m2Si and found it had boomy, loose bass (which some like) and grainy mids/highs, not even in the running, a serious step down and then some. I was looking for a lighter integrated but the M2Si was a disappointment. Tried a SoundArtist which Jay reviewed and he was right, it doesn't go with Focal. Way too bright in the upper mids. Plus it had some QC issues and I tried more than one. SQ wasn't on par with the Hegel either.
Found a Keces E40 which sounds very close to Hegel in its' overall performance but may not be enough power for some speakers and listener levels. The Hegel is better in areas but flipping between them I didn't notice too much a difference at moderate volume. So I own both.
So...yes, Hegel is great. Smooth, powerful, balanced. The H160 is said to sound cooler side of neutral but it is plenty warm enough for me. Tight but pronounced bass, the H190 may sound a bit warmer in the mids from the reviews, but the difference is probably small.
I paired a Topping D70S dac up with the Keces and it is nice. The D70S hooked up to the Hegel to compare with the internal AKM dac of the h160 I found the D70S a bit fuller in the bass but the AKM in the Hegel has a bit better separation and resolution IMO. Not a huge difference but noticeably there. So the dac in the hegel should still compete with external dacs up to a grand or so today. It doesn't do DSD and is limited for some PCM hi-rez streaming which is the bottleneck but for soundtracks and CDs it is more than fine.
An alternative amp is the Keces E40 for desktop or even as a main driver if your speakers aren't demanding of power and you don't listen at high SPLs. Keces does have an Amp for almost 3 grand that is stated to sound the equal to a hegel and a bit better in some areas to a few reviewers and it weighs in at just over 30 pounds if weight is an issue, which it is slowly becoming for me. It also has a smaller footprint.
I would recommend Jay try a Keces too. It's built in Taiwan while Hegel is PRC if that is important to you.
There are other nice amps, integrateds too but many cost even more. Had a chance to try an Audiolab 8300A when it could be had for about $600-$700 new but missed that boat. Now they are up to $1400.

    • @nc3419
      @nc3419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@datdudeinred One other thing. While the E40 and the S300 are powerful in what they are, the E40 has been independently measured to produce 34 watts at about .7% distortion at 8 ohms and in the low 60s watts at 4 ohms. It is sold as either a 40 or 50 watt depending on which vendor advertises it. Keces themselves say it is 50 watts into 8 ohms but do not give at what distortion. So I would say 40 watts conservatively at 6 ohms.
Whether the numbers hold true for the S300, it is still a powerful amp with high current capability. Whether it measures at 130 or a bit less, it's a powerhouse and only weighs a bit under 30 lbs which is more manageable to move around without injuring oneself.
For some reason Asian manufacturers (from my experience) like to give higher numbers at anywhere from 1% to 10% distortion or theoretical limits for maximum power output..perhaps bragging rights?
Still, Keces has proven themselves to sound and perform really well.

H190 for a room that large if you have inefficient speakers. H120 doesn't have that much power and there's an enormous jump to the H190 power wise. Worth the upgrade, although I wish they included the H360 DAC.

I am old, I can make myself feel better about today's price by using an inflation calculator to reduce it to 1980 dollars, which is when I was immersed in High Fi as a young man. $3K in 1980 dollars is over $11K today. Looking at $10k speakers today, I would tell myself that I wouldn't have hesitated to spend $3k on speakers back then so its legit to spend the inflated equivalent today.

Hegel H190 plays uncomplicated acoustic recordings unbelievably well. It gets confused playing pop, rock, and even symphonic music. Produces congested sound and anemic midrange experience. If reviewers stopped masking Hegel’s shortcomings, that would save those Hegel boxes the trouble of multiple round trips.

Just purchased close to my dream system within affordability LOL! Focal Sopra no1's with a line array of 6 Rel S/812's. I have no other gear purchase yet. Unfortunately I'm running out of money fast like most audio files do, lol. What are your thoughts on the Hegel H190 for the money? Would you invest more money on your DAC then your amplifier for SQ?
Why is it that class A amplifiers can deliver more power with with less wattage? For instance, I have a pair of focal sopra no1's that require 150 watts a channel yet I was recommended this luxman Class A amplifier that only pushes 30 Watts a channel?

There is no surprise the Hegel H120 drove the Sonus better than the Hegel H190, as well balanced integrated amps are unicorn products. And it does not logically follow that a more expensive version of a brand is automatically overall better than a cheaper version. Another unicorn integrated is the Marantz PM11-S2 from 2009 - which I own - which performs well across every parameter.

Thanks for the recommendation Jay. - I bought the HEGEL H90 and use it with the 3000 $ DAC: Audio Alchemy DDP 1 and PS 5 Power Supply and the TRITON TWO+ which takes over the bass with its 1200 watt bass amp down to 24 hz - so I get the best of all worlds. I got it 2.th. hand for only $ 932 - it solved the problem with shrill treble from my old Audiolab S + P power amp and gives me much more musical enjoyment. §;-)
