You are correct. Banks informally sell a dollar with the black rate. As for me, floating may not affect the import and the macro economy as well. The only difference i saw here is that bringing the informal activities to the formal one. Let us see if it hurts the whole economy or not.
You have been out of the loop for a few years. We already have dual exchange currently. From the US you can send legally today 115 birr per dollar directly deposited to your bank account. The rate was 122 birr/1 usd a couple of months ago. So the government had been studying this at least for a couple of years. So your idea of dual exchange is an old trick. Now is the time for the market to decide the value of birr to any foreign currency. We as a people should support our government implement its economic policies which is to make our country competitive in the global market place. How do we do that? Intentionally, stop consuming imported consumer goods such as clothing, shoes, alcohol, building materials, etc...

I was wishing not to take any support from IMF or WB. But not possible I guess since we have to repay back previous loans and buy some imports. It would be good to have similar agreements with Emirates with others and also brics. We have to use the $ for critical needs, try to export more, remitance through the govt. system and cut down on unnecessary imports. We will succeed. But let us not take more $ loans we will be trapped in more debt.
There are so many international investors who would be interested in investing in Ethiopia. The floating market will give them confidence that the dollar they bring in to the country is safe. If it goes down, they can wait until it goes up to cash it.

ከደም መጣጮቹ IMF-WB ጋር መስማማት ማለት የውድቀት፡ የውርደትና የመንግስት ውጤታማ አለመሆን ምልክት ነው፡፡ በገዛ አገርህ፡ በገዛ ሃብትህ፡ በገዛ ንብረትህ የሌሎች ሎሌ ለመሆን የሚዳርግህ ከጥበብና በዕውቀት የራቀ አመራር ሲሰፍን ነው፡፡
ለድርድር ዶላር ለማግኘት ይህን ማድረግ ብቻ በቂ ነውይ ? ተበድረህ ለመመለስ ሃገር ሰላም መሆን መስፈርት አይሆንም ወይ በአብዛኛው ግብር በማይሰበሰብ ሃገር አበዳሪ ሃገራት መስፈርት አይሆንም ወይ?
There are so many international investors who would be interested in investing in Ethiopia. The floating market will give them confidence that the dollar they bring in to the country is safe. If it goes down, they can wait until it goes up to cash it.
Dual exchange is already in use if you don’t know. There used to be Abey exchange in USA 😂
