Hey everyone welcome back to my channel! today we’re going to be reviving a series i started over a year ago called the “where the hell are they now” series! I started it last Spring after thinking about what defunct content groups like Team 10 and Magcon would be up to now that they aren’t as big anymore but after those two I didn’t really know who else to do a video on…. until noW (lol)
To give a quick backstory, the vlog squad is a content group that was loosely formed through David Dobrik’s vlogs with his friends who all came from former vine fame. As the vlogs grew in popularity the group was given the name “the vlog squad” by their fans and the group leaned into it. The group featured huge creators like David Dobrik (obv), Gabbie Hanna, Liza Koshy, Corinna Kopf, Zane Hijazi, Heath Hussar, Scotty Sire etc and a ton of celebrity cameos over the years. For a pretty long while the vlog squad was seen as “unproblematic favs” due to not only the lack of drama they seemed to get into, but how they swept any drama that came up under the rug by never responding to it. This changed though when a prank against a previous member, Seth resurfaced and allegations against a now-former member Dom also came out. Since then the group’s public reception has shifted from what felt like universal adoration to one that’s a lot more divided. So I thought it’d be interesting to see how this shift has affected past and present members and what they’ve been up to recently- because it’s worth remembering that the vlog squad has seen quite a few members come and go even before the controversy so I wanted to see what they've been up to as well.
While the recent changes are definitely part of why I wanted to look into the group, the other big reason was that i felt their situation and potential to grow out of the group looks a lot different than the previous content groups we’ve looked at in this series. I was also just curious about what past members who had been a part of the original vlogs but left before the start of the “new era” a few years ago have been up to. I think what’s also pretty unique about the members (past and present) is that quite a few of them are taking on outside-of-youtube opportunities that are a lot less conventional than what you typically see from youtubers so I thought that was another interesting detail to look into. I feel like gabbie and Liza were by far the most well known outside the Vlogs, both when they were featured and now, probably because they had large audiences from vine but I also think it’s because they never tried to replicate David’s vlogs on their own channel, they always stuck with their style of content (Liza was known for her skits/scripted content, and gabbie for her story times). Back when I was into the vlog squad *shudder* it always felt like all the other members who did vlogs were just trying to recreate what David had done
I feel the exact same and felt the same, and I felt like whoever I watched from the squad I always felt I was watching watered down David vlogs

Well if you look at Davids oldest videos he was clearly clickbaiting and clout chasing on Gabbie and Liza's account putting them in thumbnails. There were both more popular then him. They even referenced that.

It pisses me off so much when ppl try to justify it as “a skit” too. Like clearly it affected her
Some mental issues like schizophrenia can be layered and are definitely influenced in severity by your experiences. Likely Gabbie was predisposed to some level of paranoia and delusion but there's no doubt that her experience with the vlog squad triggered a dark series of events for her. But I have trouble feeling bad for her when she treats other people, including her own fans, like dirt.
But also not sticking up for David or anyone on there, you don't really know how they get along behind the scenes and knowing how she is maybe David did that so she can get a taste of her own medicine.

On Alex Ernst- his girlfriend has posted a couple tik tops that have popped on my fyp, it seems like he’s just chilling. When someone asked her why he had a flip phone she said “to enjoy the simpler things” or something like that.
I just rolled my eyes at that last line

I feel like Trisha, as awful as she is, helped people open the eyes to how problematic David can be. She was the first one to really call the Vlog Squad out, and now, numerous other former members (Gabbie, Jeff, etc) have shared stories of how actually awful it was and we all just didn’t see it. I AM NOT PRAISING TRISHA, as she does not and will never deserve any praise for how disgusting she is, but people didn’t start to analyze the Vlog Squad’s action until after she left.
I honestly think David used the pandemic as an excuse to take time off when it was really the Jeff Wittek accident that made him stop for awhile

Lol I went to college with Scotty Sire's current girlfriend, and she was a horrible snobby sorority girl. Had a few classes with her. She thought she was so much better than everyone else and it showed.
i think david stopped doing views solely because of how much he and the group incriminated themselves on the pod over the years. them talking sort of unfiltered and unregulated is no longer a risk he's willing to take.

While I wasn't a fan of the vlogs I did enjoy Zane and Heath as a duo and I do listen to their podcast with Mariah and Matt. They make a good group and I would rather watch them than David maybe that's just me.

I think what helped David keep such a wholesome image despite still doing some gross and awful stuff on the channel was besides kids just being normalized to thank kind of behavior from watching for so long is that David at least didn’t act like a complete jackass in the normal world when he wasn’t filming...he’s was basically doing what Jake Paul was doing but Jake acted way more douchey no matter if he was filming or not so it was way easier to almost ignore David cause Jake Paul was way worse (turns out their exactly the same) so them never addressing anything was a smart move buisness wise but considering all it took was one story with proof to get out for the whole stack of cards to fall down I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner...Jake basically kept those guys from getting found out for so long...him and David are a match made in hell

I was a huge fan of the Vlog squad up until their scandal. I don’t want to support David anymore. But it is hard because most of the internet seems to have forgotten about it, so sometimes I do too. Genuinely so confused on how the Vlog squad made it back relatively unscathed

Zane and Heath’s podcast is literally one of my favorite things ever. That was literally the best direction they could have taken, and I just love hearing the banter between them and Mariah and Matt.
I kind of see it as the twilight cast. A lot of the main characters struggle to break away from the original content and “flop” to some extent because of that. Whereas cast with a smaller insignificant role were able to move on, Liza Koshy/Anna Kendrick. This might be weird comparison but it’s just been in my mind😅

Here’s the thing- I was a fan of the vlog squad since 2017ish. Dom had a scandal before all of this happened. There were a lot of people coming forward with their stories about Dom. He tried to better himself and apologize for his actions and I’m pretty sure he even had merch with “Changed Man” written on it. But he never actually changed or bettered himself. Seeing that he was involved in yet another scandal with Seth and everything, unfortunately isn’t surprising to me. Personally, I don’t think his behavior now is going to last long.

TFIL is SO fun. I have an 11 year old brother and it’s one of the only channels the two of us watch together. The yelling can be annoying to me but they do some really cool things and help a lot of people.

I never read a vlog squad phase because I didn’t like their humor (see: entire section of this video about how they treated Gabbie Hannah) so I never understood avid watchers, it just makes me think of team 10 but somehow their image stayed cleaner for longer

Funnily enough, the last video I watched was about Big Nik being a ghoul over the Travis Scott Astroworld debacle. He makes Dobrik almost causing Wittek to lose an eye look good.
I think the one of the reasons they were able to do so well outside of their group was bc they were one of the first “collaborative social media groups” and also they’re all in their 30s or at least their late 20s, whereas the newer content groups are either in high school or very early 20s. Basically I’m their maturity level age wise and content wise make as huge difference in groups these days
