- The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is one of Taiwan's most anticipated attractions. It occurs towards the end of the Chinese New Year holiday celebrations, when hundreds of sky lanterns are launched with people's wishes on them. I had the opportunity to visit Shifen and witness people enjoying the festival. This is an event not to be missed!

Oh wow! My wife and I were in Shifen that same day for the festival! It was so crowded! Every time we saw a vlogger in Taiwan, we even joked about seeing ActionKid there because we had been watching your videos of Taiwan to get a preview of the places we were going to go. Great to know that we were in the same place as you on the same day!

Nice video! Also, the main event for the lantern festival (平溪天燈節) is actually in the evening at Shifen square, yesterday (Feb 24) was the second event (first one was last Saturday). At the square, hundreds of people release their lanterns at the same time, and the view is really spectacular! Hope that AK did stay there until evening and can bring us the view!
Yup, the release of the sky lanterns in the evening is the main event! I didn’t stay for it though since I had other things to do.

I’m thinking of going to Shi Fen when I’m in Taiwan, could you tell me how to get there from Taipei?
I’ve seen online there’s a bus 795 to ride as an option but not sure if it’s still the case.
Also, could I use TPass to ride Taiwan Railway or High Speed Rail from Taipei to Kao Hsiung?
Yes, bus 795 is still there, but I suggest you take the Taiwan Railway train to Rui Fang station and transfer train for shi fen. Usually, the trains aren't really that busy, so for tourist, train is generally a better option. And no, you cannot use t pass to ride Taiwan railway or hsr to kaohsiung, you can only use t pass to ride local trains within certain regions.
I would suggest taking the Taiwan Railway to Ruifang and then transferring to the Pingxi Line to Shifen. TPASS is a regional specific transit card and it will not work for the High Speed Rail or a Taiwan Railways train from Taipei to Kaohsiung. A TPASS for the northern region of Taiwan would work for the trains to Shifen.
