@WinstonMoroe with Konami seemingly letting indie devs try their hands at the series I could see the signals getting the chance to make one! It just depends on whether they want to :P

@Dman You're so salty it's beyond sad, it's like you live to be disappointed
No matter if the game would actually be good, all you would be doing is just cherry-picking every possible problem and use it to hide all the good they could do
I saw OG RE4 fans doing the same with its remake

To respect the original. Don't change the story, the controls, camera angles, soundtrack and voice acting. Just improve the graphics, add an easter egg or two and just remake the game. It's perfect as is, just update the graphics.

Silent Hill 2 does not need a remake, let alone a remake from a questionable studio
If we talk about remakes, Silent Hill 1 is the best choice.

huh, you're right man, never thought about Eddie being under utilized due to how powerful Angela and James' stories were. In a longer remake, they could spend some time building him up properly towards his boss encounter when he goes mad.

I hope they stick to the core premise of this game. Keep it psychological and horror style scary we don’t need combat build systems and new enemy types we need dark nasty hallways, static radio that is the only thing telling you when certain enemies are getting closer, and great soundtrack/cutscenes that’s stay true to the story. If they took notes from silent hill pt i wouldn’t be upset and there’s nothing wrong with fixed camera angels giving the player less control can make a game more scary

    RE enemy variety:
It might not even be necessary to create new enemy designs. Bloober could instead modify enemy behaviors as the game (or an individual level) goes on.
For example, use nurses exclusively in the hospital level. When James first enters the hospital, they have sticks and pipes, but as the level progresses, they could have knives then maybe guns. So even though, it's the same enemy design with the same symbolic meaning, their behaviors and threat level escalates.
Similar things could be done with the lying figures and mannequins such that they become more aggressive and more threatening in later parts of the game.

    • @Sputnik34
      @Sputnik34  ปีที่แล้ว +2

that would be a nice middle ground but i would really hope that at least one new enemy type is introduced!

    • @mdjey2
      @mdjey2 ปีที่แล้ว

I partly agree with you. I think aggressiveness and new weapons are not totally necessary, they could just modify behaviour and make it more unpredictable and disturbing because I think some of the enemies are not as much there to kill you, but to make you uncomfortable. I think it is receptiveness what we are discussing to eliminate.

The Town gave Eddie a chance to change and be a great guy, instead of a creepy murderous weirdo. Eddie failed his self redemption. James would have failed too if he just blew his brains out. But James succeeded in facing his fear, removing the guilt and forgiving himself.

For the most part the game didn't have fixed camera. It didn't gave full control over it but you could have it go behind James most the time. It's a middle ground. They could just do it like the Resident Evil Remakes where when you had the flashlight on the camera would always be looking in the direction of the light, so it could give you surprises by the sides or behind.

It doesn't require much improvement on the story. Leave the original soundtrack, especially the "Toluca Prison Basement" and "Forest Trails". Make combat a slightly better and make controls more responsive. Add more puzzles, add more variety, but do not cut any! Add Pyramid Head to some locations to stalk James like Mr X in RE2...

I'm staying optimistic about the remake. I mean as long as Bloober stays faithful to the spirit of the original and I do think they will, I think it'll be great. They couldn't do any worse than the HD Collection. If they're smart, they'll build they're game on the bones of the original like Bluepoint did with the Shadow of the Colossus remake.

I'm passively excited about it. I'll still play it but I wouldn't be surprised if it's bad, and even if it's good I'll still do what I usually do, beat SH2 once a week constantly.
I will admit anything added to the gameplay is for the better, as jank as it is. It is virtually impossible to even get hit by an enemy in this game since you can just stun them to death

No faith, no confidence in the remake whatsoever. It's easy to remake a game like RE because the core of the experience is related to the mechanics. It could be any developer making this game, i fully trust that it won't be near as good as the first due to the legacy the original left. There isnt enough integrity and respect for art left in the gaming market to make a near-perfect video game on a AAA platform. There WILL be higher ups and publishers looking to make as much money off it as possible, at any cost.

All remakes need to look to re1 remake. Admittedly, re1 was pretty rough, even if beloved. Sh2 still holds up pretty well visually and mechanically. For me, I just want more fluid controlls. If it looks nicer and the radio works better, that's great. Although, maybe giving players slightly different routs would be cool.

I like SH2 but more SH4, and I will prefer a remake of that one than this one, simple, bc SH4 has more potential, and more stuff to add, like more bosses, more scenarios, Nowhere isn't created, which was a shame, played wirh Eileen, know more about Henry, add P.T. elements, stopped the recycle in the second part of the game, add more endings, also an UFO one. SH4 has a lot of potential for a remake.
SH2 is more difficult, but SH2 has to be bc there is a new movie Return to SH, and the topic is James and Mary, now on cinema. Therefore this is a Konami advertising move, a remake has to be done.
One thing that put a positive in this is Masahiro Ito, bc he was one of members of KCET, the oriiginal ones, he was there from the start. This guy know all the plots of SH, and he also mentined that SH2 was bigger than the final result, but the team silent discored that PS2 was difficult to work, they removed a lot of material. In this remake they can add more of that delete stuff.
Bloober team isn't good on plot, but they don't need to create one, they just need to copy, and expand some stuff, like PH lore I guess, konami is eager to this, PH is the mascot of the game, they need to give him a more broad meaning.
Playing with Angela, and Eddie that's also another important idea, see other perspectives with different characters, rhat's another good point in this remake.

Bloober's remake will certainly be very different, that much is already apparent. if you're hoping for something like the original, the emotions are already all wrong. as in, they are far too present. In the original, James walked around blase pretty much throughout, whether that was due to lack of animation skill (probably not), hardware capabilities (I don't think so either), or some other kind of constraint or shortcoming. whether that was intentional or not, the end result is somewhat disconcerting, and really makes you think. does he really know what happened? does he even care? is he running on steam, so weary and tired from what happened that he can't react to anything like a normal human would? is he so traumatized that he's repressing everything?
The Bloober remake has James look broken down, almost like he's on the verge of tears throughout the footage we've seen so far, looking a bit more like one would expect to react to something like this.
A good analogy would be the song "Last Kiss" and its versions done by The Cavaliers and Pearl Jam. the song is a story told by a man who lost his love in a car crash. The Cavaliers version is upbeat, completely incongruous with the words and events in the song. That version always gave me the impression the guy doesn't even realize what he's saying, he's so traumatized that he doesn't believe it. Pearl Jam's version is slow, weepy, sad, what you would expect from a song about boo hoo hoo my girlfriend is dead. For me, The Cavaliers version hits so much harder because it's not in line with expectations, and you end up thinking the guy is in complete denial, and that when it does hit, he's gonna be completely devastated. The Pearl Jam version shows me a guy already in the healthy stages of grieving. No denial detected. He's sad, but he'll get over it and get on with life.
What does this have to do with anything? I get the impression that the Bloober version is more in line with Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss": James is sad, he knows it, he really knows what's up, but he's already grieving, and he'll get over it. The original SH2 is The Cavalier's version: James is in complete denial, doesn't even know why he's there, repressing everything including normal emotions, and when it does get to him, it will wipe him out.

I've seen the majority of complaints and concerns being based on James "overreacting" and only because of this people are already giving up on the whole game
That feels disingenuous, because those were the scenes where James normally did act the most in the whole game, like elevator chase, or double Pyramid Head
And talking about dodges, I hope they won't make it too easy and trivialize combat, but at the same time combat in OG was also trivial, (besides one chase on hard) everything was easy with wooden plank and the game gave you a lot of ammo

Then like the new team you clearly don't understand subtle storytelling, James is suppose to be basically on auto pilot as he's had a mental breakdown he's not reacting to much because he's not well mentally, he act's emotional when he kills the two Pyramid Heads, because it symbolizes he no longer feels guilty (there's two because he's killed two people Maria and Eddie) for killing, it's stuff like that we as fans can tell the new team have no idea it just fly's over there head.

The combat is the area with the most potential for meaningful expansion. It doesn't need to be in league with a Platinum Games title, but I highly disagree with the crowd that thinks it should be left alone.
Video games have the unique position of being able to communicate themes and ideas through their interactive elements.
I understand that James is an every-man, and that should come through, but he is a man with a propensity for violence. I think it would be interesting if the game's combat was used in a way to help convey that. You need to believe he is capable of committing horrible acts.

In fact I also fear that the SH2 remake by Bloober won't meet expectations. I've played Layers of Fear 1+2 plus DLCs, "The Observer", "The Medium" and "Blair Witch".
They are phantastic at creating atmosphere, absolutely phantastic. BUT... they never know when to stop. This problem had "The Observer" as well. When you enter people's minds some scenes are just way too long. The same with Blair Witch, the house at the end of the game is just too long. It kills all horror if you keep extending the scenes with more and more jumpscares and completely kills the atmosphere and makes you wish for that scene to end finally.

  • @johnzarek3628
    @johnzarek3628 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The point about the combat. I 100% disagree.
Survival horror combat interactions are all about decision making and resource management.
    You have limited ammo.
You have limited non-regenerating health and healing items.
    You enter a room.
    There is an enemy.
You must decide right then and there if it makes sense to run away and try to avoid the attacks of the enemy or fight.
If you run you save ammo but could risk taking damage. Also, if you will enter this room again in the future you might have to make the same decision again.
If you decide to fight then you have to decide if it is worth using ammo, or risk taking damage by using a melee weapon.
Also, what kind of ammo you want to use if you have multiple guns.
If you implement a dodge system then you completely break this decision-making.
There is no fight or flight or item management decision-making.
If you can dodge and kill every enemy with melee weapons then you stockpile ammo and the enemies get less scary because of all your recourses.
Part of why these games are scary is because the main character does not control like a normal action game. Cannot get skilled when it comes to combat. The skill comes from fight or flight decision making and resource management.
You are supposed to be put in tough situations. These tough situations are supposed to be tense because you are just a normal guy and have to risk taking damage or use ammo in every encounter.
If you implement a dodge system, then the player will most likely master it at some point. Every fight would likely become trivial and the game would not be scary anymore.

Wait, you actually think there was a meaningful choice in SH2? "Cannot get skilled when it comes to combat"? Did we play the same game?
And here I though killing enemies was the only optimal way even on hard, because the game always gave me enough ammo and wooden plank was that good for the beginning
I can see speedrunners run past enemies, but it's just nothing more than self-imposed challenge
For what it's worth, SH2 is a really easy game combat-wise compared to maybe RE1 that had better balancing

      @@Sputnik34
The game is scary in the beginning, but due to poor difficulty balancing it becomes much less scary half way through.
On a side note, survival horror games need to be short because you get used to the game, which makes it less scary as the game goes on. This is inevitable.
If you're good with recourse management then you stockpile those resources, which makes the game easier and less scary. If you're bad a recourse management then you'll eventually dig yourself into such a deep hole that you'll probably have to restart, and no one wants to restart if the game is long.
If you play the game blind on hard for the first time the beginning and the apartment section are legit hard and scary. Part of the reason why its scary is because of lack of weapons, health, and ammo. Lack of familiarity is also a big factor.
The Hospital is still scary because the nurses are such an excellently designed enemy. The way they move is scary. The noises they make are scary (they scream at you). Ect.
After the hospital the game gets less scary. The run around the town part isn't scary because by then you've figured out that you can easily avoid and outrun every enemy in this area, and you can find recourses throughout the town without having to spend any.
In the prison section, there aren't any new enemies. So you're basically fighting the same enemies that you fought in the apartment, but this time you have a better melee weapon, more guns, more ammo, more healing items, and you're already gotten used to the enemies so they aren't as threatening or scary anymore.
Gameplay wise I feel like this is the weakest section of the game.
So, survival horror games will eventually lose the fear factor because you get used to them, you know what to expect, and possibly because you stockpile resources and enemy encounters become benign. If you add a dodge mechanic you will just exacerbate the problem. Enemy encounters will just become trivial earlier and you'll stockpile resources faster.

      @@spicydong317
"Meaningful choice"? I never said this phrase. Please explain what you think this means?
That's right. You cannot become "skilled" when it comes to shooting your gun. There is no aiming. The gun combat is just about recourse management. It's not like a shooter where you can become better at head shots and take out enemies faster.
You can become a little bit more skilled when it comes to melee combat. That is all about timing. It is about attacking after the enemy misses an attack so that you can dish out damage without taking any. It is not like a normal action game where you learn combos, learn special moves, and master the dodge button mechanic, or whatever.
My biggest problem with Silent Hill 2 was how they handled the combat difficulty settings.
Normal mode was way, way too easy. On hard mode the designers did not adjust the amount of ammo and healing items in the game. Instead they slightly upped enemy damage, slightly upped the amount of health normal enemies have, made the enemies attack slightly faster/more often, and then it seemed like they gave the boss enemies about 3 or 4 or 5 times the amount of health, which was a terrible decision. This made boss fights monotonous because they lasted so long and it made the rest of the game lose tension because you would walk around with hundreds of rounds of ammunition by mid game.
The better decision would have been to give the player far fewer recourses on hard (especially ammo), only give the bosses a slight health increase, and give the bosses a damage increase.
I say "especially ammo" because I feel like the game is scarier when you have to deal with normal enemies with melee weapons. If you give the player more ammo, but fewer healing items that you will incentivize the player to "play it safe" by not taking damage. If there is a lack of ammo, then the player will be more incentivized to save ammo by either fighting with melee weapons or running. And when you have to get close to enemies then you have to deal with their attacks and tension of the radio noise and the enemy noises. If you give an abundance of ammo then the player does not have to deal with this as often because they can incapacitate enemies before they get within striking distance.
One of the problems with Silent Hill 2 was the stockpiling of recourses. The beginning and the apartment section was perfect on hard. Lots of enemies. Unfamiliarity with the game. A weak melee weapon. Not much ammo and healing items. The hospital section was great too (in part because the nurse enemy was designed so well), but after the hospital the player's ability to stockpile resources was too great and the enemies weren't threatening enough.
If one of the main groups of people that you take into consideration when designing a game is speed runners then you'll probably end up making a game that is unplayable for just about everyone else. I wouldn't base anything design decisions based on what a tiny group of speed runners are doing.

    • @johnzarek3628
      @johnzarek3628 ปีที่แล้ว +1

By the way, I am not saying that Silent Hill 2 did a good job with the combat design overall. I have been explaining what makes good survival horror combat.
If you want an example of good survival horror combat then play the remake of RE1.
Silent Hill 2's failed combat-wise in a few ways.
      1. The action difficulty settings were poorly designed. Normal was too easy. Hard became very easy halfway through the game.
      2. On hard they made the bosses into bullet sponges. Instead for Hard Mode they should have adjusted ammo and health layouts and increased the damage enemies dealt.
      3. On every difficulty setting ammo and health was too plentiful. Very early into the game on Normal you could kill every enemy using guns and never get close to running out of ammo. This made it so you never had to make tough decisions. You could just shoot every enemy. You never had to decide between fight or flight. You never needed to take the risk of using melee weapons.
All the remake has to do to make the combat good is rework the difficulty settings so that the amount of ammo and health available in each difficulty setting is appropriate.
Easy should be the mode where you can just shoot your way through everything.
Normal should be the difficulty setting where beginner players have enough ammo and health so that they can make mistakes and bad decisions occasionally. The game should still be somewhat tense, but not punishing enough to make them revert to previous saves or start over.
Hard should be where you don't have enough ammo to kill all the enemies and you don't have enough healing items to take damage on a regular basis. You need to be forced to make tough decisions about when to run and when to fight. When to use ammo, and when to risk taking damage (risk using healing items) by engaging in melee combat.

I also want to explore more of the town but storywise it's important to remember James is on a single-minded mission. Also, if you make optional content overly rewarding I think it would hurt the difficulty level and vibes of the game. My best suggestion is that during the periods where James is on the streets of Silent Hill looking for a way forward, he should have to enter more buildings before making progress. And make these diversions like the bowling alley where you don't find a mechanical reward but instead get a story cutscene or just find something interesting.

I'm not hopeful. There's no way that it's going to be better today than it was back in 2001. Team Silent is necessary for a Silent Hill title to actually be Silent Hill. I guarantee this will launch to lukewarm reception based off of high expectations alone. First off, it's a remake. Bloober (...that name) is obviously going to add unnecessary and extraneous stuff to justify their part in remaking it. There's nothing they could do to make me want to play this beside probably making a 1:1 remake with smoother controls and modern visuals. It looks fundamentally different and loses that eerie ghostlike feel. Overacted mocap face expressions incoming. Second, it's a game that didn't need to be remade in the first place. A remaster would be nice but there's no reason to re-release an altered SH2. It was a masterpiece that was only dated by the stiff tank controls and combat that was common to that generation.
edit: and of course Konami is going to puff it up and say it's going to be a worthy successor. But remember that they are Konami. If you don't know what that means just look into it. It goes deep. I don't know a AAA game company that has a worse track record. They drove the Metal Gear and Silent Hill series into the ground by making it impossible for their visionary talent to basically do anything. Then they whored out the franchises to low-level game developers and focused on pachinko machines, proving that they don't give a single s*** about what truly made the company great. They cared more about making money off of people putting little metal balls into pseudo-gambling parlor slot machines.

The real problem is that Silent Hills was a big promise too but it got nuked at the last minute leaving everyone disappointed and deeply resentful. But, add to that, the people who made sequels to Silent Hill also thought they were living up to the hype but, sadly, were just digging the franchise into irrelevance. Silent Hill: Downpour was significantly better than Homecoming but they were both just a game that shared the title and nothing of the mythology. So we have Silent Hill, 2, 3, and Zero (Origins) that sort of circle the same ideas, but everything else are just titled the same. I would say that Shattered Memories is the best "reimagining" of the franchise but it is still a completely different ideology. The fact that we have companies that can redo games, like the recent Dead Space, who "get it" and know how to remaster a perfect experience on modern equipment means that there's potential. But we also have companies that remake content like a drunken Alex Kurtzman who seem to make a new game without ever having played the original - like Resident Evil VII and VIII. I thought Death Stranding was a terrible game but with a great core idea. I have no idea what the Silent Hills game WOULD have been like made by that person who made such a ridiculous game in the first place...but I'm not very sad that we missed that opportunity.

I don't think so. By their previous games they have had games that lack in quality and silent hill 2 is supposed to be a psychological horror. They barely can get actual jump scares and horror atmosphere well done...That and changing that start scene with James touching the side of his cheek instead of the hand over face to make sure he's awake. I have no expectations so i have no disappointments. They need better graphics not a changed product hopefully. I wish to be proven wrong and that they will do a phenomenal job.
Your enemy argument is stupid. Most of them are related to james. With the exception of abstract daddy which is a result from angela. All the others are there for a reason for james. Why add something new to it and possibly risk sullying it ? Also combat remake may ruin it. The immobility of james upon contact made you plan ahead and showed how inexperienced he is. He is no fighter. Dodgle, block and sidestepping...If it is a homecoming it is gonna be screwed. Iframing and timing based? No reason to have that and become a modern dodge fest.

@@Sputnik34 no, but it is a friendly reminder in general.
The final product & player experience matters first & foremost.
Trailers & news are important information, but it’s wise to try & keep ourselves reasonably conserved & restrained until then.
It’s easy to get sucked into mass hype, & if things go south, it can serve a negative effect from setting up unrealistic expectations that games can’t reasonably Achieve.
      -
If things go right, then you have the ability to better appreciate something based on your own investment & details.
Sh2 is the make or brake scenario thanks to Konami’s history.
Remakes won’t replace their source material, but they should try their bestest.
It’s gonna be hard, because allot of “weirdness” in how SH (Team Silent) plays is by intention - both for mechanical & contextual reasons-,
Add 2’s plethora of subtle details that impact the game in ways you won’t notice right away - & you’ve got a real challenge with balancing & adapting. Bloober definitely has allot on their plate, one to hope they can stomach down (so to speak).
~ even though I personally am not very impressed by what was shown (even as a Silent Hill late-comer who hadn’t played many titles {yet}),
There’s still a fair chance they can put something out that’s both a pleasant surprise, & at least feels like it has care put in. - if things sadly go the other way, then at least we have other games to play.
Apologies for the word-salad. Allot of thoughts are hard to condense for time-sake.

The fact that Blooberteam is remaking it is very disheartening for me personally..
Especially considering the CGI trailer they showed has James Sunderland looking like a half assed version of his cartoon counterpart which looked more unsettling because of how remarkably stupid he looked compared to how he should look-

Did I really hear words "stamina management" and s" in discussion of Silent Hill 2? I don't think author understands what he's talking about. Look at RE4 remake, i doubt it has any s, lol. That's not the point of Silent Hill 2.

      @@Sputnik34 Fair enough. Mine too😁
Making suggestions like that is fine, I guess, but really I'm not sure if any of the fans will care so much about fight system in general. Monsters in SH2 is more like a nuisance, not a critical part, and putting a lot of emphasis on fighting can shift attention away from other aspects. The atmosphere suppose to be their general focus. After all, James is not Leon or Chris.

Yes, more creatures. Throw some unique ones that you don't find anywhere else to keep you on your toes (mandarins don't count, those things hardly impact anything).
More places to explore, being optional sounds great. Always wanted that.
But the changes to combat sounds awful, I wish they left it as it was. The good "bad" controls of the original survival horror games are actually a plus, not a detriment, to the overall atmosphere and general feeling of the game. If we get to dodge, parry, and have a "skill" based combat, that would change the mood too much.

    • @Sputnik34
      @Sputnik34  ปีที่แล้ว

I think that managing stamina coupled with still stiff, but more interesting combat would be a nice balance and still be in respect to the original games intention and tone

    • @Mantosasto
      @Mantosasto ปีที่แล้ว

@@Sputnik34 Managing stamina, yes, I have no problem with that. Only with reflex based stuff and timing, like i-frames and dodges a la Dark Souls. I kinda prefer positioning and maintaning distance for horror games. Being close and personal removes the scare factor for me.
I know we melee everything in SH, but the camera being far from us helps with that. If it's an over the shoulder one, it's not the same.
