Kiri is an absolute angel singing angelic music. No one like Mozart.
One can see the despair on her face and hear it in her voice: what a delicately moving interpretation! If only a dvd of the Magic Flute with her performing the role of Pamina were available!
2)About the advice made to the young singers: the lryric voices (like Kiri's) naturally do sweet portamenti, it's not a defect never in any repertoire. BUT: first the tecnique, second the interpretation and the portamenti. :)
One more thing: Who can have the authority to teachs Te Kanawa, the best Contessa of all times, the best Dona Elvira, who has record almost all the Mozart Concert arias, how to sing Mozart?? SHE IS THE BEST AUTHORITY.
Wow! Glad someone got THIS on video. This is one of Kiri's best. I just love the version by Gundula too.

Fantastic. I am definitely going to work on this over the summer.
One of the most difficult arias by Mozart. Kanawa sings it beautifully, though, I would say, this particular rendition has some flaws for a very demanding listener. Still, she is one of my most favorite singers among the contemporary sopranos. I agree with the portamento. I think this aria requires portamento and Kanawa offers a nice version of it.
Whan an imazing music part starting 3.21 - the most wonderful piece I've ever heard!
Agreed Dame Kiri seems to skip the staccato in this "herzen", but it can be heard in all its glory in the Amadeus recording. A wonderful soprano singing a beautifully tragic aria
I like bigger voices on the role of Pamina! I think this is very well done... and I love this version.

1) What's the problem with Kiri's portamenti?? Who says how you have to sing Mozart? listen Leontyne Price, a great Mozartiana who use many marevelous portamenti in her Mozart interpretations. In my opinion its makes a warmer and more human Mozart. Mozart was a composer very sensitive,with a lot of passion.

I find her voice is able to pull off singing Mozart perfectly fine, not my favorite rendition of the song. I can understand that there is no 'one way' to sing Mozart, I just don't particularly enjoy Dame Kiri's way of singing Mozart. In my opinion she needs more distance and sadness in her voice. But over all this is quite a lovely performance, she pulls it off well.
"some flaws"?!? "below par"?!? Please, do tell us rubes and noobs what is so inferior about this performance. I'm dying to know.
If you're going to assert that this has flaws, you had better list them--and let us know where we can hear it sung better.
It's a very good interpretation but tempo's too fast for a lament!!
It's written in many scores of the opera however, to ignore it would be an insult to this music.
Beautifully sung. Working on this one right now, but I love Kanawa's voice.
However, a note to other singers and students- Kanawa makes some very non-Mazartian choices in her interpretation. For example, where in the world did those staccato notes go at the end of the coloratura section of "herzen"? Tsk tsk. And portimenti are very much /NOT/ to be used in this aria. Please be careful- ask your teacher. Just because it sounds good does not make it appropriate.
I would take any time the pompous advice of someone who is working on something and therefore not too experienced with it...
Hmmm. I would say that this is below par for Kiri. Sorry guys.
