Surely this is one of the most challenging pieces ever written for a singer: nothing to "hide behind;" no "character" that takes the focus off the music. Just one person singing one syllable for 5 + minutes. Gotta be harder than singing an entire opera.
One of the most amazing qualities about Kiri, other than her vocal abilities, is how incredibly GRACIOUS she is! I wish every performer had her gracious attitude!
La Te Kanawa in great voice doing one of my favorite pieces of all time. She's such a classic and I could never tire of hearing or seeing her. Bravissima!
Absolutely wonderful... I so love 4:40 ... when her vibrato blended with that orchestral trill... This is best recording of vocalise I found through these years.
That was perfection. I can't get over how amazing this is. I don't even understand how a person could sing so flawlessly, and those trills are unbelievable... I only wish more than 26,000 could see this
Yes, the voice is so very beautiful, but in this wordless, and seemingly endless melody, Kiri finds so many expressive nuances, and each of them is phrased with such specific musical and emotional meaning and so beautifully that the voice speaks to us as meaningfully and as directly as if there were works. She tells a story moment to moment that is so wonderful to hear.
To me, she is THE example of effortless singing…how it should be. She hardly even opens her mouth. I watch and watch, and try to learn. Just love her. … in everything she does.
Her trills are just jaw dropping, how she does them as effortlessly as Oistrakh played the violin. It's nice to hear her singing something that is not Mozart, of which she is the master.
Her dynamics, her beautiful legato line and incredible breath control, just the right amount of portamenti linking phrases, ALL lead to a sublime performance that few will ever match! BRAVISSIMA Dame Kiri!
Some people like a heavy vibrato, some don't. It's just a preference of taste. But for me, it adds a whole different level to this performance. Her voice is amazing, and the world is going to miss her. If I had been there, I might have cried.
She had such a superb, natural, head voice -- everything was focused there -- even the low tones, which made for such beautiful sound. In my estimation, this woman was not appreciated anywhere near enough. All head voice. Sublime. It's like the best kind of singing on earth. How I wish she were around.
A majestic performance in every aspect: beautifully sustained lines, perfect intonation, a pure and lovely sound fitting Rachmaninov very well. And it is very hard to sing for five minutes without a text, when all that counts is the quality of the voice and the musical presentation.
Amazing how different interpretations can be pearls on their own😊 The wonders of being open to the new “live” moment where ever & however?! I loved this so different performance especially with Kiri’s glorious sound. Thanks to YT for this treat & countless others💓
I had heard Dame Kiri singing several times at the Met, including as the Countessa in "...Figaro", but I don't ever recall her singing as beautifully as she does here in this magnificently sung performance of this famous Rachmaninoff "Vocalise"
Just listened to many other videos of this and have put THIS one on my list of favs. She not only has gorgeous phrasing, but every note seems to have meaning as well. Think of the control and intellect this must take.
I disagree actually, this is far from perfect especially when there seems to be a wobble in her voice. If a violinist like Izthak Perlman tried this on stage, he'd be blasted by the critics immediately. She's almost a half step off pitch with her vibrato, I would argue even Rachmaninoff wouldn't be happy with this performance when he heard Arthur Rubinstein play he even criticized the piano being out of tune on one of his recordings. I recommend checking out Anna Moffo, I'm sure Kiri Te could have sung better if she wasn't 50 years old and past her prime in this video.
***** Wow, your ear must be really...er...keen. I was going to say sharp, but that might have been misunderstood. Where specifically does she go off? I had a re-listen and, being a composer (click my name and check out my Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor) pride myself on having a pretty good ear. But maybe I wasn't listening critically enough. And Moffo's is wonderful too, but I think she transposes it to a different key. And you're right. I'm listening to it now and it's much clearer. Moffo's may have better sonics since it's a studio recording, while Kanawa's was live. That sometimes makes a difference.
There's a live version with Ilona Domnich-Soprano, a much younger singer (in general younger singers with good technique don't have a wobble) If you wanted specific sections, like 4:41-4:45 is off. 2:00 on the release is off, 3:15 is another section. Pretty much it's a wobble when the vibrato becomes so wide that the note that's in between the bends loses it's intonation. There's a video from Franco Tenelli that explains the different kinds of vibrato and what a wobble is. I guarantee you the Ilona Domnich version is closer to how a violin or cello sounds in terms of vibrato speeds. Just listen to Jascha Heifetz or other covers of the Vocalise, the piece didn't need such a wide vibrato really. Natalie Dessay is another version to check out where the pitch isn't lost from the pitch bends. The thing is the wide vibrato and wobble eventually happens to all singers as they age.
***** Well, you've got a terrific ear and you must be a musician. 99% of the people out there and quite a few musicians would never have picked up on that. My piano is playing c#-minor and I think that is the original key but if my piano is flat then the original key is d minor. Going with C#-minor I CAN hear something happening on the (I thought) trills. But I did notice that Moffo's are a lot cleaner and I can't decide if it's the better studio equipment or Moffo is just the better singer and younger.
***** Not only off pitch, her vibrato is WAY too fast. I love Jackie's version because her vibrato resonates with my brain's idea of perfection. That's why I said she blows Dame Kiri's version away.
This is without a doubt, the most superb rendition of this very emotional work. Kiri displays her true artistry by beautifully and effortlessly executing this work for us, the listeners. Exquisite! I want to find the CD with Kiri singing it. WONDERFUL!!!!
I might have had some doubts about whether some of the other songs you posted are really the best interpretations there are, but this song TOTALLY hooked me. Another great thing about this video is that Dame Kiri frankly looks like a model or better. Thanks!
Absolutely amazing. What heavenly beauty and tone. Its so funny how much her technique allows her to project so well without showing the slightest effort.
Dame Kiri is a superb performer whom I have admired for many years, and had the pleasure of seeing in concert in Sydney. Thanks for posting this lovely Vocalise :-)
What a great presentation of the Harvester of Sorrow's masterpiece! "What does man gain from all his labour at which he toils under the sun? " SR has always been known as a great pianist, great conductor, great composer... but never a happy person. Fame and money are never the answer to the true meaning of life but the spring of profound emptiness.
I consider myself blessed for having heard Dame Kiri live singing the Strauss Four Last Songs. She has such a gorgeous voice and such resonance. As far as the critics on this, I just want to say, can you do half as much or sound anywhere near as good as she does? Putting your two cents in doesn't cut it for me when you criticize and don't appreciate the vocal beauty that is ever present in this marvelous voice. I am so glad to have experienced her live and continue to appreciate how beautifully she sings. Some mention breathing -- I remember Nilsson once commenting to a singer who said she was having difficulty breathing, Nilsson said: "Just breathe." Besides, I'm not listening for breathing or mistakes. I'm listening to the voice.
Thank you very much for bringing this beautiful performance to our eyes and ears. This is scaring at the same time, she is using her voice as the rhythm of an instrument as volatile as that violin or the cello, just imagine the ability! I am speechless!
she is remarkable w/ breath control and vocal production. no cheating w/ voice mechanics. i like her strength in middle and upper register. dessy does a very nice performance, but notice her range bottoms out in several lower passages. te kanwana does well w/ "let the bright seraphim", too.
She can make me cry every single time I listen to her singing! Besides her AMAZING voice and incredible interpretation, her kindness and warmth make her face and eyes glow. She is simply WONDERFUL!
Just beautiful! I was fortunate to see Dame Kiri perform live in La Traviata at the beginning of her career. She was wonderful then and she is wonderful now. A lovely performance.
VOCALISE Opus 34, No.14 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, song lyrics by Joel Sattler [aka Sergei Rachmaninov] New title: “Lullaby Over the Graves of the Children” Close your eyes I will sing lullaby Go to sleep Till the end of the night I will sing my heart to you

Rachmainov's music is so beautiful, but it makes me cry. Then I have to listen to Beethoven or Tchaikovsky. Classical music turns us all into manic depressives
Everett Cox I did listen to both and my conclusion is the same as before. Jackie is a sweet lovely young girl with a lovely voice, but as of now still does not have the maturity in her voice to be compared to Dame Kiri. An opera singer of her calibre has spent years perfecting her craft. I wish Jackie all the best for the future......
On manquerais de sérieux en disant qu'elle a mal chanté cette oeuvre.Mon Dieu!! Elle a fait le choix de l'usage de la voix qu'elle souhaité.Si l'on connait l'art vocal et cette Dame on le comprend tout de suite.
Im nothing short of OBSESSED with Dame Kiri. I think I have more of her Cds than should be allowed. She is by far my all time fav Soprano. What class she has. And that voice....its straight from the heavens!
Rachmaninov would have cried hearing this. I cannot imagine a more beautiful performance of Vocalise. This is incredibly difficult. Remember, the singer has to BREATHE too. There is enormous variety of sound and timbre. The trills are perfect. There is just the right amount of vibrato. This is the authentic Vocalise, in every way. sanjosemike
I was at this gala and this is even more lovely than I remember! Thanks so much for posting. I guess she didn't sing any Tchaikovsky as it wasn't really her rep (I think she sang Tatyana early on in her career, but in English not Russian) - and I recall that she was supposed to sing the Czardas from 'Fledermaus' at the Gala but changed it to the Puccini at the very last moment for some reason.....
It's 4am where i'm at... and i woke up to a dream about this song and cried.... she is amazing. Rachmaninoff... is a amazing to have such power in a song.. .all sung in "AH" :)
This would not be my first choice. Do you know how to read music and play piano? I was singing long before i took voice, and music class to learn how the composer intended an also to help me learn new pieces when a pianist was unavailable to have a recording because as you well know, countless hours are spent on perfecting each song and even more spent on vocal exercises. I hope that before you are given songs for long standing vocal icons, you are taught the vital foundations for vocal strength projection resonance range falsetto your stamina and the most important part how to breathe how to stand where you focus your breath control how you start your i call it my ready note no sound but my diaphragm has already begun to contract control the airy to powerful ..hard to explain but watch masterclasses yoy cant ever be expected to perform a song such as this without preparation. I would never instruct my student to learn a song by sending them to learn via youtube videos. If you are paying or attending and have an instructor like this you could ruin your vocal chords also, your teacher might not be professional in which case has neither your best interest at heart, nor has any idea about the subject and is an imposter. Either way, look for an instructor that wants you to be the best you can and help you highlight all of your wonderful qualities. This is the beauty of singing the art is how much you convey the song by your voice. Best of luck and dont lose your passion for opera it was put in your soul for a reason. Namaste.
This piece is not for the faint of heart! And not for beginners. My biggest issues with it were "Where do I breathe?!" I found I didn't want to ruin the flow of any of the lines, so taking a breath became a real challenge. Listen where Kiri takes her breaths and try it. It takes a lot of breath control! Gorgeous piece, though, if you can do it well. (Took me two years of work!)
For all those saying Jackie Evancho is better, way too premature. She is only 14 years old, so until she is like an opera singer and can sing without the aid of amplification across a stage and over an orchestra then .... Modern technology is great but lets just see how many decades Jackie lasts - and I wish her well.
Dame Kiri's presentation is Exquisite. Beautiful. Jackie's warmth of tone embraces me, moves my soul. She is not Dame Kiri. Nor should they be compared.
After listening to Perlman's violin version of this, I at first thought that Dame Kiri's version wasn't to my taste and left the page a little bit into it. As soon as I clicked on the back button, though, the next note she sang changed my mind, and I came back.
No denying she is an Opera singer, still I can hear her breathing too, which most Jackie's critics complaining. This had no microphone holding, how much more if she had, then perhaps you can heard her breathing. Jackie is not opera singer, but she sound good at her age. I was so surprise in her new album," Awakening". All I can say is WOW!. For a crossover singer, without voice lesson?,that's amazing. I notice when she sing, she's like chanting the song. That's make her unique, with all young singers today. She also brought many to love classical music, back to the public taste. A good piece of music, that you enjoy. Inside your home with the kids. Thanks Miss Jackie Marie Evancho, for sharing that. God given gift you have. And to all legend opera singers, Jackie back you up,how beautiful you are.
If Bel Canto definition is (beautiful singing), then Jackie Evancho is a Bel Canto Contemporary Classicalist. Her Vocalise presentation is on my stereo and it is very moving, touching, beautifully and gracefully sung. Only 14 years old. Astounding!!!
@MsExodus2000 Opera fans have never claimed that opera singers can't be heard breathing at all...just that the breath sounds are mininmal, as they are here. Jackie, and many of the other pop opera singers, including Katherine Jenkins, who is supposed to have had classical training, actually loudly gulp for air, which shows that their breathing technique is not good. Also, the loud breathing is not the only thing that separates Jackie Evancho from opera singers. Her voice is uneven, she breathes in all the wrong places, chopping up phrases which should be sung all on one breath, her voice is tight rather than effortless, she hunches her shoulders and clenches her fists, which denote tension in her body, her chin wobbles when she sings, which shows that she has tension in her neck and jaw, she doesn't support the tone properly, and her voice sounds strained, especially on the high notes. In addition, she has not learned how to correctly use her lower register, and her voice drops out on many of the low notes. Her voice is lovely, but she needs to be trained. No singer starts out fully trained. It just doesn't work that way...and all singers, of all types, need training. Unfortunately, Jackie seems to have no interest in vocal training, and her mother doesn't want her to get a teacher either. The lack of training, and singing improperly, will sooner or later damage her voice. Please don't bother calling me jealous and a hater. I've heard it all before, and besides nothing could be further from the truth. Even opera singers have badly damaged or destroyed their voices by singing with poor technique and/or singing music that is too heavy for them. I would think that her fans who claim to adore her voice, would want her to get the training that will ensure that her voice lasts over several decades rather than being badly damaged in just a few years.
Surely this is one of the most challenging pieces ever written for a singer: nothing to "hide behind;" no "character" that takes the focus off the music. Just one person singing one syllable for 5 + minutes. Gotta be harder than singing an entire opera.
This is by far the best Vocalise I've ever heard. The dynamics, control and expressivenes are just stunning. Bravo!
Anna Moffo does an exceptionnal one!
@@ericreymann7283 Yes, I also preferred both of Moffo's performances here on TH-cam.
love Kiri, but Aida Garifullina's rendition is at least equally beautiful
It's Anna Moffo for me.
A soaring beautiful, seemingly effortless work, typical of Dame Kiri. Thank you.
Such vocal control, such beautiful tone & expression...all embodied in this beautiful lady!
One of the most amazing qualities about Kiri, other than her vocal abilities, is how incredibly GRACIOUS she is! I wish every performer had her gracious attitude!
Some things are so beautiful they break your heart. This is one of them.
I grew up listening to Dame Kiri. My mother loved her so much she would often cry while listening to her.
How can a lady stand there and give me goosebumps like this. That is a true artist.
La Te Kanawa in great voice doing one of my favorite pieces of all time. She's such a classic and I could never tire of hearing or seeing her. Bravissima!
I am crying. So beautiful. Crystal clear voice..hitting every note..feeling the music. Thank you Kiri.
Absolutely wonderful...
I so love 4:40 ... when her vibrato blended with that orchestral trill...

Incredible performance! Best Vocalise on TH-cam without a doubt.
Only Kiri can sing this exquisite song so beautifully .
Breathtaking!! I could listen to Kiri singing Vocalise the whole day! Thanks for posting this gem! Giusi

Eva Wasiel Wasiel It would help your conclusion if you listened to one then the other right after. I did and that's why I said Jackie sang it better.
Everett Cox I did listen to both and my conclusion is the same as before. Jackie is a sweet lovely young girl with a lovely voice, but as of now still does not have the maturity in her voice to be compared to Dame Kiri. An opera singer of her calibre has spent years perfecting her craft. I wish Jackie all the best for the future......
th-cam.com/video/GV01c-fQS9k/w-d-xo.html Veronica Joeva is the best to perform it.
And that voice....its straight from the heavens!
... BRAVISSIMO !!!!!!! .... IMENSA A SUTILEZA , DA INTERPRETAÇÃO DA GRANDE DAMA , KIRI TE KANAWA !!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much class and precision! Pure passion of clarity...
you can't compare an album recording to a live one guys!!
i'd like to hear jackie sing it live
i can`t stop to say: Her voice is GORGEOUS!!!!!...
This makes my head explode. I mean that in a good way . . . So much beauty, I almost can't take it.
This is the authentic Vocalise, in every way.
sanjosemike
beautiful , profound and ethereal
I was at this gala and this is even more lovely than I remember! Thanks so much for posting. I guess she didn't sing any Tchaikovsky as it wasn't really her rep (I think she sang Tatyana early on in her career, but in English not Russian) - and I recall that she was supposed to sing the Czardas from 'Fledermaus' at the Gala but changed it to the Puccini at the very last moment for some reason.....
Her singing is amazing!
I am a huge fan of Dame Kiri, but my favorite recordings of Vocalise Op. 34 No.14 are those by Anna Moffo and Suzanne Murphy.
Christopher Yates u
Absolutely lovely!
It's 4am where i'm at... and i woke up to a dream about this song and cried.... she is amazing. Rachmaninoff... is a amazing to have such power in a song.. .all sung in "AH" :)
Masterly! Lovely interpreter. Thank you.
My singing teacher gave this to me and I have no idea how to practise this little piece of ... very challenging ... music
+DieBacille love it! falling love with this fantastic music first!
I agree she is still too young, listen to Anna Moffo..... perfection.
I thought Kiri did a very pleasant rendition.
Silver Schooner OMG!!!!!!!What else can one say? It bears repeating -- OMG!!!!!!!!
This must be like a warm-up for any decent soprano. I like Kiri's version the most of those I've heard.
She has no match. Such exquisite tonality. Such sensitive artistry. Such superb pathos. Such delicate pianissimos. Brava! Brava! Brava! Brava!!!
Moffo is better !
@@joesoy9185 It is so funny😂that you would remark to something I said 15 YEARS AGO!
@@Ettenyl56jioni Yes it is !! Nice to see you´re still alive ! 😆
BRAVO!!! Kiri Te kanawa!
