I have so much growth coming through, including pretty much all perennials, which this year didn't die back to the ground, so I have been clearing all old spent growth. I am now planting the gaps with bulbs and divisions. It looks soo much better and the increased light and air is doing the plants wonders. It should help to knock back a few pests if we get some frosts too. It has massively decreased how many slugs I'm seeing. I would have a field day clearing your patch!
I have started to remove a few bits, and I still prefer to hold off until the end of January. We are likely to get a few cold snaps still, I also hang on to prevent stimulating the plant into growth as if the weather turns for the worse, it'll cut down any sappy new growth , let's hope the weather stays calm.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 I get you, I just find it hard to get the straw out of my ornamental grasses once they get a certain amount of growth, and they are already a 15-30cm high with the new seasons growth, so it felt like now or never, plus I do two lots of perennial divisions a year, between sept and now and again in proper spring (from the same plants) Crown bud divisions of delphiniums are so productive if you get them early enough, plus heleniums, angels fishing rods, crocosmias and red hot pokers and bee balm. I am saving tons in not having to buy anything new for the borders
Hello from America, I always enjoy your videos. I love the variety of ornamental grasses you have. I too have them planted all around my front and back gardens. Most of them are in large containers. I paid a visit to the nursery the other day and purchased six more. I’m sorry I can’t remember the names, too many to remember. What type of Euphorbia do you have in your garden? Here’s hoping you had a wonderful holiday.
Ornamental grasses can be very addictive, I recently ordered another miscanthus new to the market. The euphorbia I mainly show are wulfenii types, a fairly hardy type that are evergreen.
Hi, hope you & yours had a good Christmas. I know what you mean about going out into the garden when it's cold- I really have to force myself. Today I cleared more leaves from the paths and potted up 12 new paeonies. They have been languishing in a box in the cloakroom for the past 2 weeks and I was feeling very guilty. I ordered my seeds just before Christmas so am excitedly awaiting their delivery. ( Pennisetum Macrourum). My phormium looked like it was going to die, but I think it's going to be ok. I put the pot in the workshop by the glass doors and it seems to have picked up a bit. It has lost so many leaves since I bought it though. I need to research the best growing conditions for it. My hellebore, Penny's Pink, and anna's red are just about to start flowering. Very exciting as the Penny's pink was bough for me some years ago by my best friend and the plnt i a lovely reminder of our friendship. I love to have plants gifted to me- they are a beautiful reminder and memory of special relationships and friendships. They mean so much to me. Love acanthus Rue Laden. Love the white flowers and the fact that it will grow in shade. I had to cut down several stems of my Nigra bamboo as the storms damaged them. I don't know if I did the right thing or not? I leave all the heads on my plants overwinter apart from those that actually rot down, such a s the jostas etc. I would like it tiday, but like you, I leave i on for the benefit of the wildlife. I sometimes get overwhelmed in Spring with all the seed sowing and then all the tidying and mulching on top. I have two allotment plots besides a quarter acre garden plot. I grow a lot of Ligularia and astilbe and iris sibirica by the overflow area of my nature pond, We have a formal pond too but the wildlife pond is my favourite place to be. We had lots of very large Koi in our formal pond. Many inherited from my dad and my brother, but sadly otters got in there and took them all, including the 2 new Albino sterlets I bought for my husband;'s birthday. Don't you just love the new frond growth of ferns? So prehistoric. Thank you for a really enjoyable video. Happy New Year and happy gardening 🙂
You sound very busy, the bamboo will be fine with the cut back you gave it, the phormium can prove more difficult, they do well in pots but prefer a sunny but sheltered site, it may pay you to remove it from the pot and remove the dead bits, which phormium is it? And are you uk based?
@@upatgrassybottom9859 yes, as I answered some time ago, I'm in Wiltshire, uk. Just watched your latest video- love seeing all your plants. Thank you. Happy gardening 🙂
All very good advice. Enjoyed this walk 'round. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thanks for looking and the same to you.
