Autumn's Decay , a tour around the garden with a visit from Des as Autumn begins to show.
Its now November and Grassy Bottom still looks good, its still a warm Autumn on the Lincolnshire Wolds but things are gong to change at some point, for now I'll enjoy what the garden gives.

So here we are nearing the end of September 2024, the whole garden looks great. With autumn about to show its firework display on the plants I take what's likely to be the last of the warm sunny days walk through the garden, the grasses are really looking good now but so are the late season perennial's .

      @ Yes I do but, I don’t remember the varieties of hand. I grow them all in large containers so I can move them around my garden.

    Loved this video- I’d already earmarked buying Goldtau for next year, but hadn’t really come across a video showing how it looked in situ. It’s fabulous- and exactly what I’m after Thank you for this, and the excellent care advice I’m certainly giving them a go! Gonna buy a couple and see how I go - hopefully they’ll like my Brum garden! 😄

    I'm jealous that you can enjoy the autumn colors in your garden. A lot of snow is coming soon where I live so I have to cut most of the plants in my garden.

      Wouldn't it be better to leave them to help protect the plant and cut down in spring

      Thank you for your suggestion. Some plants are cut in the spring, but I cut tall plants before the snow falls because they will break and be crushed under the weight of the snow. Also, once the snow piles up it protects the plants from the cold.

    Took some 3 inch cuttings in coco coir from a plant growing from under my neighbours fence. Hopefully they take and I can plant them out this spring.

    how do u keep the beds free of weeds? i keep getting dandelions and all sorts of other weeds growing on my flowerbeds all the time.

      I have to tolerate some weeds , regular hoeing helps as does planting heavily, which helps to keep them down. I used to be obsessive about removing them, but I now don't let them run my garden life. Mulching your borders helps, but it is not a cheap option.

      Ironically, I never mentioned the rose name. It's called Rosa 'Starlight Symphony', and a bonus is it's practically disease free.

    You have a stunning collection of ornamental grasses and you are very knowledgeable about the varieties. I don’t have many areas in sun, I garden mostly in shade but anywhere I can I’m going to add some of the varieties you have.

      Give it a go , although some grasses are listed as sun they often take shade, Hackonechloa macra take shade as does calamagrostis brachytricha.

      Yes, I did build it, I used old reclaimed pine, and the finial was found on an old post that was abandoned, I've made a few over the years but this was a challenge as it was fairly complex.

      I think it's zone 6 to 9, I grow plants for different soil requirements, and the ones for dry are in the gravel garden as its south facing all day

    Glorious captivating gardens, your own personal taste is unique and very pleasing! Just a quick question, what do you consider the best of the earlier flowering miscanthus? BTW, you do give very good commentary! :)

      Thank you for your kind words, with regards to the best early miscanthus. For me, it's definitely miscanthus samurai , it has a great leaf colour, which comes in early and is the first to send up its seed heads, it's relatively short making around 3 feet at best.

      I had to look up the mentioned book, I can say it's not me that wrote it, my garden is a culmination of previous gardens I've made, and my love of gardens and design in general , I just love what I do, I don't garden as a job , it's my hobby but a hobby I wouldn't be without.

      I've not seen those two, but I've seen some great Polish grasses on line, I'm not sure if miscanthus fire dragon is Polish, but I have miscanthus megadot which I believe is Polish

    Voles (not moles) eat roots of my ornamental grass so I have to plant it in pots or wire mesh bags, Your grasses look amazing!

      There will be plenty of grasses that suit your climate, but yes, you'll need to try a few out as you may have a micro climate to deal with.

      Yes, it can appear like that. Always wear gloves , I only wear them when cutting back the spent flowers, but it's good practice to wear them always.

    I have had a problem with something eating (? slugs) my Astrantia Hadspun Blood - any ideas what could be causing the damage ?

      It's likely to be slugs or snails. My own plants suffer too, but they usually grow away after a month or so, making them less tasty. They prefer to go for new growth.

      It can often take a couple of years for it to settle in, give it a nitrogen feed in spring once new growth starts. Which one do you have?

      @@upatgrassybottom9859 Thanks I will do ! I have a few varieties, but think the mistake that I made with the giganteus is that I split it up early this year and didn't plant until May. I Need to leave it in the groundfor next year to get the height increase i believe.

      @RedCoin91 I'm in the uk , I garden on a chalk base, but it has a good moisture, retentive soil, with clay in one part, I never test pH as most plants we can get hold of are good for us.

      They are handmade like bricks. They are from a very old farming estate where they were likely to be used as hardcore. They are clay.
