The rat race starts sometime after you are done with college. You get your first job which pays decently enough to allow you to buy your college dreams. For some, the first dream would have been to get a 72-inch plasma TV or a 152-inch one, if you are a big dreamer. So you buy your TV. Next dream on the list might be a car. So you get yourself a functional car as you wait to buy the car of your dreams. At work, you grind harder; get a promotion and a salary raise. This means that you can now afford to move to a slightly more expensive and fancier house so you do.

Slim chance that happens during your lifetime though so while you are alive, try to make the most of it within legal, ethical, and moral standards. The video does not discuss the return on investments, time/value of money. If you could save up $100,000 in assets that return 10% you'll have a passive $10,000 a year income source. Keep reinvesting and increase your passive income out of the wage slave trap.

So true. Robert Kiyosaki said it best when he said most people use their money to "invest" in liabilities that they think are assets. Fancy cars, big houses, and shiny things that constantly take money out of your pocket without giving any back. Then people feel trapped and think it's just because they need a better job.

It's not just the Americans. This is a universal phenomenon which involves 99,9% of the people, everywhere in the world. Unfortunately. And although many of them realize they have this problem, they continue "running". It is not a matter of perspective - it is an amalgam of fear combined with brainwashing, weak mind, and lack of endurance & faith in one`s own capabilities. Of course, hearing this beautiful story about the amazing opportunities of the internet - which is basically true, yet still a crapshoot when studied closely - and living in the "wrong" environement, surrounded by the wrong crowd, surely doesn`t help much either. My conclusion a long time ago was: either believe in yourself and face the challenge head on, or just keep going with the flow until the day you die. One must be open-minded and courageous enough to take on life itself, but also stick with it, being ready to accept the consequences - whichever they might be. And there we are again, back to the start of the seemingly unending rat race, facing one`s constant companion - fear. Keep going or break free? This is the time to choose.

@Joseph Heaton Well I don't know you but is clear my comment bother you.
I'll give you a little context, I'm from Mexico, no the US, here we have quite big public schools, that's not the issue, wages here are the issue.
You'll see my first job was as electronics technician when I was 16, later when I was 20 I left that in order to do full time at the University, how much do you think I earned at 20? Around 400 USD/month. Later when I started working at my first biomedical engineering job the salary was exactly the same.
For more context average rent in Mexico City is around 600 USD, for even more context a 3-5 years of experience biomedical job is around 770 USD after taxes, while my father a retired elementary school teacher makes around 1000 USD, the same that an informal groceries peddler (a vendedor ambulante) according to the last government earnings survey.
Neither my father nor the peddler needed a 5 years bachelor's degree (that's the time an engineering degree requires on Mexico, also elementary schools teachers only require a special high school certificate and have lifelong jobs).
Me like lots of professional workers are quite angry because most professional wages are way beyond poverty line (average lawyer salary is around 500 USD monthly) and we are making way less money than most people without any studies.
I don't feel grateful, I feel cheated, because I studied since high school at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional which is arguably the country's best engineering University and since then I was told by my parents and teachers that all the effort will have their reward.
Now I have mechatronics engineering fellows that preferred to illegally migrate to the US to work as electricians because they saw a better outcome on that.
Others like my sister left the country to study their Master abroad living with the minimum wage she earns as research assistant because here she didn't saw better opportunities.(she estudied biotechnology engineering).
I'm lucky to be able to learn by myself and work on software, but if you see at LinkedIn most well paying software jobs not even require a bachelor's degree, here lots of companies didn't trust mexican universities, for me my time at the University was a waste of time and money.
I'm very sure that in the US the things aren't the same, and I know it because my own second degree cousins whose parents illegally migrated to Texas back in the 80's are doing quite better than me without any degree working at the restaurant sector.
You can't talk me about financial hardship if you're from a country where your bachelor's degree actually allows you to live above the poverty line.

@Joseph Heaton Well anyone who work their way out of trouble deserves respect, and that includes you. I saw this video
expecting a more meaningful financial advice, but I got disappointed because it talked from a position that for me an possibly the vast majority of world's population is a pretty comfortable one. That was the reason of my rant.
Besides the fact that Mexico's situation isn't good or nearly comparable to UK or US one, it could be worse, for example I doubt I would be even able to write in English if I've been born on Guatemala or some African or the Mexico's southern states.
So sad that most UK graduates had that bad outcomes, from here the UK universities look like a quite prestigious option. Besides that I'm quite confident that in the face of the political struggle you're facing your generation will be able to stand up against the hardships.

Starting a business isnt for everyone. It’s usually a lot of hardwork and requires patience and dedication. Most people get stuck in the rat race because of *lifestyle creep* _which is the tendency of increasing spending as you receive raises, promotions or bonuses_
    It happened to me, what I learned was;
    1) when you pay off your car loan, dont trafe it in for a new one.
    2) your time is valuable. It’s better to work 10 hours at a place 10 minutes from home than it is to work 8 hours at a place 1 hour from home.
    3) when you get a raise, you will be tempted to increase your spending habits, DONT. Too many people go out and get a fancier car, or a nicer condo to reflect their income. It’s a trap.
    4) keep your home full of groceries. This gives you the luxury to wait until the deals are good to buy certain items.
    5) if you qant to start a business, start small and local. Avoid MLMs and avoiding investing a fortune into a high maintenance business. Instead treat it like a hobby and grow more seeious as your business grows. Dont start a business in debt

The trick is balance. Let work be your top priority so you can keep a good job, but don't give it all of you, save time for yourself, your spouse, your kids, your community, your church. Live below your means. Save for the future. Give to the needy. Chasing more stuff will not fulfill you. Your life does not consist of possessions. At some point, say what I have is fine, what I need is good relationships with those I love. Honor God from your heart. He will bless you, I promise.

Not everyone is capable of succeeding in their own business. Some people are actually better off working for others. Even if you ha good ideas it does not mean you will succeed or NOT lose your investment. One thing these videos always fail to mention is that it really does cost money to make money and even more than ever before now days when you have to compete with big corporations who can do things far cheaper and they tend to be well established. Currently even big corporations are folding up shop! The realist know, while you can succeed in a huge way in business, many...most in fact end up losing their money and even more so now when the average person doesn't have enough money to afford a minor medical emergency much less spending anywhere else.

Learn a skill or go to college to learn a trade (not just some general degree) do the rat race for about 10 years to learn how monetize the trade or skill, open a business on the trade or skill ( I own a boutique CPA practice), live below your means and invest 30% (minimum) of your income (I did real estate and now collect rent from 6 properties).
Stop making someone else wealthy and invest in yourself.
That’s how I was able to get out of the rat race by the end of my 30s. It’s liberating to not have to rely on a paycheck, make your own hours and enjoy spending time doing what I love to do.

Remember we work to live,.. Don't live to work. A few ways to prevent yourselves from getting too deep in the race, for starters live BELOW your means... I remember my second job as a carpenters apprentice making 10 bucks and hour at 17. I was making 400 a week with zero bills aside from my cell phone. And I blew every penny every week on food, pot, fishing crap ECT. Told myself I needed to make " more money". My next job as my skills picked up I was making 15 an hour! 50% more and now I only had car insurance payment yet I still was broke every week. The more money I made the more money I spent whether on bills, or luxury I felt I deserved. Always live below your means. Buy a used car instead of new. Buy the car in cash no lease and no loan. I have always owned my vehicle never had a car payment aside from insurance and I saved thousands in interest. Don't buy food out just buy it at the store and cook. It's insane how much we spend on food that's already prepared. And last but not least... Don't drop a grand on a cell phone when ones at wall Mart can do the exact same thing for 100 bucks... I don't understand how anyone that isn't rich can spend that much on a cell phone meanwhile I have friends that make less than 40k per year complain about money and they bought the new I phone for 1100 bucks... And are slowly paying it off layway or credit card.. By time they pay it off its time for a new phone. Im not old but I come from a time when 200 was considered expensive for a cell phone. And lastly, start investing early as possible leave it alone and let it grow

It's a race when you consider it to be. Don't let this world decide for you. No one's ever happy and satisfied with their lot in life because they always want more just for the sake of it. The world depends on you being this way, and It's very easy to get sucked into the rat race. But, as long as you know what you want and are clear on that, you'll never have to worry.
For me, peace of mind is very important. The most important thing in my life. There are other pulls like ambition(career), a desire to belong(family & friends) etc. But most of them disrupt my sense of peace and I try to make sure that doesn't happen.
Comfort is the second factor, which leads into peace. Not luxury but comfort. People around me go for big screen TVs, costly mobile phones, crazy house interiors and some really costly cars. I try not to look for all that. I ask myself; 'am I comfortable with what I have now?', 'is it causing any strain or discomfort?'. Most of the time, the answer is 'no'.
If I take my car for example and I feel that it's getting too old and causing discomfort. I ask 'how?'. The answer can be; I hear a lot of noise, or there's way too much shaking, or I visit the repair shop too often. Asking myself for reasons for why I want the change and being clear on whether I am still comfortable or not will decide.
    Hope this helps.

If you want to change your life, do it incrementally, like Angela. I heard someone say in jest, never change more than 1/8 of your life at a time. Over time, the small changes-- letting go of unnecessary expenses, changing routines, establishing new habits, using time more wisely-- add up. And any change, however seemingly insignificant, can be a catalyst for more change. The big, dramatic changes--quitting, moving to a new area, etc.--sound great, but if you carry your old habits with you, your life is likely to fall into familiar patterns. As a first step, figure out what you need, not what you want, and don't confuse the two. Surprising how few people even take that step. Finally, keep a journal. It is the single most powerful discipline I know of.

Don't take on any liabilities, no credit, no loans... cut liabilities to a minimum, don't have family and don't make tax and economy slaves for the system, not just yet. Acquire assets, if you only have wage it's wrong. The moment your asset classes exceed liabilities is the moment you have won. Only then you can have family.

This video is a perfect description of what Cal Newport calls the "passion hypothesis" in his great book: "so good they can't ignore you". He argues that work you love doesn't come from following a pre-existing passion like painting, but instead from focusing on a "craftsman mindset" - that is to say on building a skill that is rare and valuable in the marketplace in order to exchange that for a job which has the following attributes:
creativity - you have to be able to choose your unique approach to a problem.; control - you have to have control over when you do something and how you do it; relatedness - you have to like the people you work with.
These factors far outweigh the impact of a preexisting passion when it comes to finding work you love. It also is a more realistic approach that everyone can follow, because it is common sense that not everyone can be a painter. Who would be fixing your toilet, next time you need a plumber?
This video has a serious survivorship bias: she made it as a designer, therefore you can make it. It fails to look at the countless examples of people who courageously made a shift towards what they were "passionate about" and fell flat on their faces.
Don't follow this advice. It won't lead to a better life for you.
