Ravens take all West End Eagle's eggs. Explore.org 11 March 2021

  • The West End Eagles nest was unattended and Ravens took their opportunity to break two of the eggs and eat the chicks, and remove the other egg. Incredibly sad for Thunder and Akecheta. :-(

    As soon as you start feeling bad for the eagles, then you remember if the situation was reversed, the eagles would devour a bunch of raven chicks without thinking twice.

    Crows are really smart. They were removing nesting material around the eggs. I wasn't sure why they did that, but then it became clear. They didn't want nesting material mixing in with the food.

      Pretty sure the wise bird had something else in mind. Just to show to the competitor neighbor, how much they are unhappy with their presence and their will to damage the nest rather than merely destroy the root of future competitors.
      But poor little things... the embryos were well formed! Sad.

      I don't find it hard to watch at all. Humans are way too disconnected from nature, this shouldn't particularly bother anyone, it's been happening for hundreds of millions of years to trillions of animals since.

    • @blackops9572
      @blackops9572 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dumb ass take. Why shouldn’t it bother you? Should suffering not bother you because humans have suffered for millions of years? Do you not get bothered when in extreme pain? Just like these baby birds where likely experiencing.
      Being connected to nature doesn’t mean you need to be numb to it. You should except that bad things happen, but you shouldn’t completely lack any empathy. That just makes you psychopathic.

    To everyone who feels bad for the eagles. They will snatch up puppies and kittens and some species will try and yank toddlers up and eat them alive. Humans and the creatures we look after are pretty much the only things that die of old age in nature. Everything else does in extremely violent and very slow, painful ways

    I don’t understand why Chet left them unattended. He was doing so well this year. Hard lesson learned, but apparently not since the same thing happened last year. Hopefully both Thunder and Chet are ok. Maybe he had to leave the nest because Thunder is MIA and needed a break. Not saying she is gone just wondering if maybe that’s why he left them unattended. Sad.

    • @colorfulautumn9722
      @colorfulautumn9722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It was a miscommunication. Chet saw Thunder flying around the nest and left. He may have thought Thunder would incubate the eggs but she didn't. Idk what's wrong with Thunder. She doesn't seem interested in the eggs. Poor Chet had been doing most of the incubating. He needed a break. He was on the eggs as late as 2am waiting for Thunder to get back a few days ago.

      @@ivanwesteurope You shouldn't speak of things you obviously have no clue about. Bald eagles were almost extinct 60 or so yrs ago. Thankfully, conservationists have done a great job bringing them back. Their numbers have quadrupled since then, but it's still not what it use to be. Bald eagles AND Golden eagles are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

    Something is not right? Eagles will not leave their nests un protected for almost 10 minutes or out of eye sight!

      I want to agree with you but then what is that makes eagles leave? They are not afraid of anything I know of!

    Too bad that the eagles’s parents weren’t there in time to protect their 3 babies !

    How so sad... why can’t the parents know the danger if they leave their eggs unattended? do the parents know when they come back that ravens took them?

      Theres no rules in animal kingdom; anythn goes and can go down; for example a pelican ingesting a pigeon or a group of pigeons eating pieces of my chicken breast; the animals will eat anythn they wish to; when the human call them meat eaters or such it isnt entirely accurate; for examples some doggies eat veggies; so nothing goes to waste

    the trouble with population crashes is that even when numbers recover there aren't many alleles left in the gene pool. such crippled species tend to be easy prey for rivals.
