Just trying to convince my husband to move there (he doesn't like the cold), but I feel there are so many other reasons why living there would be nice for my family. I lived there for five years, a long time ago. Just trying to find the best city/suburb that's not too $$$$ and has great schools, with a town to walk to for coffee, restaurants, shopping

I live and grew up 20 miles outside of Boston. I LOVE WINTER! I love the snow, I love the cold, and I even love the short days and long nights. The colder and snowier the better!
I own a home and light a fire practically every night. Imagine, a cold winter night - maybe a snowstorm - and you are bundled up inside, nice and warm and safe as the wind howls outside.
You light a fire, get your favorite drink (an ale or lager, port, coffee or tea) sit in your favorite chair next to a beautiful wood fire - listening to your favorite music - maybe reading a good book. There is nothing better.
Add to that all the great comfort foods to be enjoyed in the Fall and Winter and it can be a GREAT time of the year - if you let it.

I feel the same exact way! I was born up north but spent most of my life down south and I hate how warm or hot it is here all year round. I envy people who live in colder places because I absolutely can not stand the heat, but I love the cold days, snowy streets, and enjoy warming up more compared to trying to cool down. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to move back up because I miss the weather.

Currently writing this from the Greater Boston area on February 20, 2023, and it is in the upper 50s f (~12c). And there were similar temps late last week. This video would have been true around 10-15 years ago but now this is an exaggeration. It's typically been in the mid 30s f to low 40s f this winter. We may get some super cold temps mentioned in the video but it's rare, so we just deal and enjoy the 40 f temps. I may not like the cold weather, but I deal with it because it could be worse. The one thing I really don't like is that it gets dark around 4pm from October to February.

I lived in Beacon Hill for 10 years and the winters are brutal. Walking to the garage, to the T, to Delucias market, CVS, it's tough. But once spring hits it's the best place to be. In the nice weather being in the city is so much better than the suburbs.

The worst part of winter in Boston is when the tip of your nose freezes off because of some Canadian air mucking about for a few days... in the middle of winter. But then, the next week, you might be out in short sleeves because some balmy front off the south seas settles in. The weather is the weather and rarely becomes a factor in the life of a Bostonian. Big snow storms are a once-in-a-decade or so event.

A solution to your irritated skin comment: lotion. Most of us (especially certain communities of color) moisturize year round because our skin gets visibly dry (ashy) not long after a shower, but it's particularly important for everyone to moisturize during the winter. Luckily using lotion is a very quick fix and will easily spare you discomfort, at least for the most part!

It is not as bad as Chicago or Buffalo. There are usually 2 or two big storms. Being near the ocean we often get rain in January and February. I suspect it is the same as New York temperatures in Boston seldom got below 10F. at night. Can you say that about Milwaukie or St Paul. I lived near the White Mountains in New Hampshire for about a dozen years. Then I moved to Boston. There can be a lot of snow but, compared to NH, Boston winter is mild. Besides, there are places to pop into to warm up a bit: cafes, restaurants, pubs, museums, department stores, etc. If you are a winter wimp, yeah, avoid Boston. But if you buy good clothes and have a good attitude, winter can be wonderful here.

I used to spend part of the year in the colorado Rockies (crested Butte) and it would regularly dump a foot of snow over night, or get in to the negatives, etc. and everyone seemed to love it. On the flip side of that i spent my summers in Mississippi and it would regularly top the 100's. In fact i think we had almost 40 days this year over 100, and maybe a dozen days over 110.
From what you're saying, it sounds like the weather in Boston is similar to that of England, which is honestly not bad at all. I don't know why you're all doom and gloom about getting wet bringing your groceries in when it's raining 😂. That's pretty normal lol

Lived in Boston my entire life.
Winters here aren't really that bad at all, unless they are.
Last winter, I never used the snowthrower once. We can have cold, and last Feb. 4th, we hit a record 10 below with real-feel temp of 32 below, but that's not normal.
We have had whopper snowstorms, as should be expected, but we've also had temps in Feb. in the upper 60s. We had the winter that wasn't one year when the temps never dipped into the low 30s for the entire season and no snow to go with it.
Unless we have a really bad winter, it's not that bad at all.

Boston winters aren’t pleasant but there are worse cities to spend the winter in. The big difference is while some cities in the Midwest may be colder and get more snow, it is a drier cold, whereas Boston id definitely a wet cold. Much like people compare the relative humidity between hot locations say Phoenix and Atlanta the the same would between Minneapolis and Boston. Boston is also a Windy City much more do than Chicago. And all that adds up to generally it feeling colder thaN the forecast predicts. There’s one positive that I haven’t Heard mentioned yet and this applied to both winter and summer. Boston is very very close to both excellent skiing opportunities and beaching opportunities. it’s just a short drive at best so you really have the best of both worlds. Boston might be the city closest to both mountains and sea, that means you have perfect winter and summer holiday Opportunities. In addition Boston also has a short but beautiful spring and let’s face it, There is no location that speaks autumn more than New England. So I’ll Boston and all urs problems anyway.

Very interesting, as usual, but....Upstate New York, Chicago and points north can actually be worse for cold, and freezing wind, Buffalo to Syracuse, NY, lake effect snow can be considerably more. I would call our Nor'easters white hurricanes because of the effects. A few years ago, and very unusually, we got hit by three in a two week period. The snow was up to the second floor, my brother's garage collapsed, the public transportation and many local streets were closed, and they had to call out the National Guard for snow removal [*there are videos of that].
OTOH, some people actually move here for the winter sports, my brother was on our high school hockey team, so people are attracted by hockey, skiing, ice skating, snowboarding and crazy people doing an ocean swim. From living in Korea I can tell you that after sauna, cold pool repeated several times, you won't notice the outside temperature that much. Snow shoveling is actually a good form of exercise if done correctly and not overdone. You become used to the cold after a week or so of constant low temperature, as my friends in Wisconsin told me, and they have to do more winterizing of windows than we do here [places north of Boston, too]. At Syracuse University I often saw Crazy Frat Bros™ playing Frisbee in the snow clad only in gym shorts!

If you live here long enough you will also experience the random January thaws that happen. Sometimes it will get up to 60 degrees for a few days, then it's right back into winter until about mid march. The weather here is insane. Boston sits at a weather crossroads. We get anything that moves across the country west to east in the jet stream and we also get any storms that move up along the east coast. Move here, complain all the time, yell and honk at other drivers, drink tons of dunkin donuts' horrible coffee and start talking about the Red Sox in February and then you're living the dream in Boston. If you're not talking about getting the hell out of Boston, you haven't been here long enough. And then there were the winters of 1978, 1996 and 2017, when there was literally no place to put the snow. We are due for another one like those soon.

Most probably is due to global warming, but, everyone kept bitching out Boston being brutal, literally moved here in the beginning of winter, and it was waaaay better than everyone was complaining about. Again, I've been hearing that due to climate change, Boston will probably never be as cold as it used to 20-30 years ago.

And this year you guys got zero snow in downtown Boston. All the big cities on the East Coast missed out. Not every year in Boston winters. Are that tough to get many mile breaks and the snow melts relatively easy. I moved from Boston to Chicago and let me tell you chicago is cold and snow never melts.
