Everytime I walk into a new game store, they say" looking for sports? Cod?" . I say nope, wheres your Nintendo section? I'm looking for a Mario jrpg lol. (I'm a big construction worker, and I have the look of one, straight out the dictionary lol)
So the salesman usually have a suprised look. "For your kid?" They say.(hes 18yrs btw) "Nah, he likes Call of Duty and NBA" , "I'm into Nintendo!". 😁😁😆👍👍

I grabbed the game on Xbox but I'll probably get it on switch as well. This is also a way better port than 9 was.
This was my first JRPG when I played it back in 1998, and to me it’s still the best JRPG. The story, the characters, the setting, the music… Nothing beats FF7 for me.
Now all we need is Chrono Trigger on the switch...

The switch needs some sort of CRT filter just to blur them sharp HD textures for old times sake.
FF7, do I buy you a fourth time? The answer: OF COURSE I BLOODY DO! One of the best games of any genre, and to see it on a Nintendo console after all these years is enormous! I absolutely love everything about this. Great review my friend!

This is the best Final Fantasy for me. Never got over it, played all the next games in the series but nothing compared to this one. I remember Emerald and Ruby monsters, such hard bosses, haha.

Amazing idea
I already have this on my ipad and laptop, but decided I really wanted to play it on my tv. The option to speed up the game is really handy for making random encounters more bearable.
Not that I dislike 7 but I've got too much love for FF8. Sad it isn't coming.

if you want to play it on the go, then you can always just get it on PSP/Vita. Its even cheaper on the PSN Store

This was the first 3d jrpg I had played and it just amazed me - it looked so amazing!
Without a doubt one of the best video game soundtracks ever, also - One Winged Angel is forever burned into my brain 👍
I think the ability to deactivate random encounters is helpful to fight Sephiroth in the final battle more easily, since he takes a power boost for every character in level 99, and if you are grinding too much, you can't prevent one, or two of your characters to reach level 99 that easily.

Thanks ! I admit the price is ok for an emulated legendary PS1 game. Even if I would really love a true remastered version. They don't need to change too much things. Just rebuild the graphics. They could make some nice stylized ones or even realistic with baked backgrounds. As long as they don't change the gameplay too much, let us see the monsters instead of generating random encounters aaaand of course don't touch the scenario !!!!

Great review. I'm playing through it myself. I remember beating this game back in the day. I loved it, though personally part 8 is my favorite. I know it's not a particularly popular opinion. This game is just as addicting as ever.

I never played this back in the day, wasn't in to RPGs. My brother would tell me this is the one I needed to play and it would change my mind. 91%, maybe that time has come? I was waiting for the remake cuz I loved Advent Children the movie, I wonder if it'll come to Switch seeing Nintendo and SquareEnix' growing relationship?

i dont think anyone trying it now for the first time will understand the titanic impact this game had back in the day, but i hope they do enjoy it as the wonderful game it still is.
Although my fave rpg was secret of mana and the spiritual sequel secret of evermore as i was 24 yrs old when ffvii came out! i completed it back in the day and it resonated in all rpg's for years, much like dark souls does now in almost every action rpg since its release.

I love the little parts of this game that have mechanics that are only for that one part of the story. Such as the military marching part. The little gym moment to get the cross dressing outfit. The snowboarding, the chocobo, the story oh this game is a masterpiece. 5th time purchase.
Yes, I should have mentioned that. It's kind of what I meant by mini games. They are so cool and really add some charm to more mundane sections. Mark
My wife's absolute favourite game, she bangs on about it all the time, yet I've never played it. Looking forward to getting my hands on this and Cuphead next month when my wallet has reloaded.

It's weird that one 😂 in my editing software it was fine and then there must have been a glitch in the Matrix. Mark
If anything, I'm not fond of how there's an option to turn off random encounters in this version. Not only can it remove the challenge of facing dangerous encounters, but it also removes some realism, like how it doesn't feel like you're being chased by whatever is surrounding the area you're in.
Normally there would be more than just the first two guards we see during the bombing mission when getting off the train... Plot-wise, it would make more sense to see more entities that would guard the reactor, like machines and more guards.

What's wrong with Zidane?
I find it baffling how people express how it is needed to have speed up button for older games. Sometimes it makes me think that attention span of some gamers today are of a child. They need to be entertained constantly with different new mechanics and flashy combat or they will feel bored.
Only game I've ever jumped out of my seat and gone nooooo! (The moment a certain character met their end). Finished it in 50 hours then immediately found a magazine with a walkthrough and played again to 120 hours. Easy to do with all the chocobo breeding shenanigans etc. Epic game.
Love this Mark and exactly that - "that" scene is one of the only ones in a game where I've come close to tears! Mark
the only game that ever made me cry
Theres a way to a get a gold chocobo without ever racing and it only takes 30 minutes. Soo much of my teenage years wasted grinding this game
played this back in 97 or 98 and it's the only game i have for my PS1. Because of that, I put in hundreds probably thousand of hours in FF7 to the point of making all characters level99 and defeating all the hidden bosses lol. I'd say it's still one of the best games I've played and will always love it!. Great review and I'm still gonna buy it for the switch.

I've played and beaten every main line Final Fantasy game except 7, 8, 12 and 15. This is a definite buy for me. It's about bloody time, I think.

I mostly agree with your review, but audio deserves to be docked a few points for the music reset glitch. It's downright insulting that this is the third port of FF7 to be released with this exact same bug and Square still hasn't patched it.

I'm just waiting for 12 to drop. Never played it before but I used to watch a friend of mine play some bits and pieces on ps2 years ago. Glad I didn't pick it up for ps4 and that I waited for the switch version

@@SwitchUpYt Yeah!! 7 I played it on Vita too and it was really nice, but 12 on the gorgeous bigger screen of the switch is gonna be amazing. I purposefully avoided RPGs as of recently just so I don't burn myself out before ff12 lol I'm really excited
I do love the look of this one too! It is still surreal to see Final Fantasy games coming out on a Nintendo system and while I’m not a fan of FF games I love that this is happening.

I'd actually really love a release of FFVI (as long as it's not the abhorrent phone/ios version *shudder*)
Personally I've never Played FFVII but that will change this coming month when I buy two $20 Eshop cards and use them for this game and Turok. Turok will be a nostalgia trip for me since I played the N64 OG release. This game will be a new experience that I'll play again and again since I never turn down a good RPG game. as to the cheats I'll keep the X3 speed cheat on for grinding purposes but I'll turn it off only to have more time in mini-games and I'll keep the unlimited health and mana turned on. and in the overall story of FFVII in both the game and Advent Children movie My personal favorite qoutes are as follows: Cloud says "Stay Where you belong in my memories." and Sephiroth Says as a final retort "I will never be a memory."
I agree 100% Mark, that the cheat system is completely unnecessary and tbh annoying. We never needed it back when it was on ps1 so we certainly dont need it now we older and wiser. Aside from the initial battles one of my favourite parts is the chocobo farm and chocobo racing at the gold saucer. I always loved getting my golden chocobo :D great review. Also I love the fact that the materia grows and duplicates.
Yeah it's such a strange thing for them to add to the game. I loved Gold Saucer it's very cool having it on Switch
Aye breeding that golden chocobo so you could get knights of the round was and epic feat all of it's own.

Thank you for this review, was wondering if i wanted to play it again on my Switch and if it was a worthy port.
Also wanted to add a little something something as i feel like it's important. I do need those cheats to enjoy those games again. I know it's bad but i've played and finished those games when they came out and i don't feel like i could play them again the same way i did back in the days. I understand that's it's personal but the reason i wanna replay Final Fantasy 7/8/9/10 is the story, the atmosphere and the vibes. Of course i think that using those cheats when you play for the first time isn't a good idea, but i do like having the option. I used to play this with a friend. Just got it with discount and just started. IMO the background graphics is a bit soft and controls may have been a updated a bit. Commands in FFVI remaster seems much more fluid to me.
Really want to finally try out this game, sure I'll love it, but as a soundtrack geek I'd love a remaster that hasn't ruined the overworld soundtrack with the whole "restart the track after every battle" thing

Just subscribed, awesome and in depth review! Never played this game, but thinking about it. Final Fantasy X was my first Final Fantasy Game and I loved what I played, but ended up not beating it because I got stuck. Haha. I should really go back to it.

I've been waiting for this game to come to the switch. My question is, does it take up the whole screen or are there black bars to fill space?
Black bars. You don't notice them to be fair after a short while. It's not a wide-screen game so full screen would look odd. Mark
I remember grinding to get the 2x slash materia to 4x slash. Well worth the grind. I thank that giant worm with teeth that rewarded plenty of xp
You can port FFVII to anything and It's the same fun game to play as It was In 1997. The only thing I ever wanted from FFVII was harder bosses and more content.
I would play optional bosses all day and just keep upping the difficulty If I could.. that would be DLC I'm all too happy to pay for.
Psq was the console that introduced me to Jrpgs I had played Suikoden and Wild Arms, Grandia, Breath of Fire 3 Star Ocean, and then I played FF7 and it blew me away, I had to wait a few months to save for it as a 16 it even got me into environmentalism and questioning capitalism via Usenet forums while discussing this masterpiece.
If you turn off random encounters you dont deserve to play this masterpiece

A highschool friend of mine who wanted to play around with some pirated video editing tools took the cut scenes of this game he downloaded from Kazaa and made a music video for Buckcherry's For the Movies song. Or maybe it was FF VIII? Oh well, VII is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I just don’t feel like the early 3D era from the 90s has aged very well. Even back then I wasn’t a fan and I stuck with my SNES through the N64 and PlayStation days. The 64 was the only Nintendo system I never owed (yes I did have a virtual boy that has ruined my eyes forever) and the Playstation was only good for Tony Hawk. Visually when you compare Mario World to Mario 64 there is no question World still looks more amazing. Maybe I’m missing out but I don’t have the nostalgia to pull me in on this one.

Noticed it's out as a physical game now as a twin pack with FF8. Does anyone know if they made it so it fills the screen on a 4K TV on the physical cartridge version?
Also is the 'knights of the round' materia still on it near end of game?
Good review. Never played 7 myself. I got in on the franchise with FFX which to me is benchmark JRPG story in my world. Hell, Legend of Dragoon had a great story going for it too. But with the graphics, I can't help but think the overall score should have ended at like a max of 87 or 88.
Funnily enough I think that's what I had originally! But I bumped visuals after a few hours as it looks so nice in handheld and the performance is so much better than 9. Mark
FF7 was the gold standard for story for the longest time surpassing even FFX. Try this game. The story picks up after a few hours.
@@getawaydreamer2724 I do intend to pick this game up. Just of all FF I've played X is my standard for story. That could change with this. But as far as my thoughts on score, it should have scored high 80s max. Background images may still hold up, but the sprites themselves didn't age as well. And for that I would have given it an overall of 87-88.

The cheats just in case I somehow accidentally press those in a heat of a battle. The only thing I can see not cheating is the 3X speed in case you want to grind for some loots and not want to take long to level up to prepared for the next boss battle.
So what will the combat system be like? I've heard it described as a "hybrid" between turn based and action...but what does this mean exactly?
It’s turn based. You take turns to attack. I wouldn’t describe it as a hybrid really - if you wait too long they will attack you again so it’s not like time stops just because you haven’t taken your move. Mark
Why do you say nothing is perfect when films like Predator and games like Chrono Trigger exist? In all seriousness, not giving a max score because 'nothing is perfect' is ridiculous. It's about what is as close to perfect as it can get to you personally.
Don’t hate me or anything but I started laughing for no reason when Cloud said his mother died a few days after the story he was telling. I don’t know why but I always laugh at sad stuff

This was really a great gameplay review, I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy games in general so to see this gameplay is amazing.
I still think I'll get this on the switch even though I got it on the Xbox. This is a good port and deserves the money. Also love the vids guys. If only I had the voice to do some like this!!

I have historically had no patience for games with grinding at all, but I'm currently playing Persona 4 and am really enjoying that an option for additional EXP was included. As far as I can see this does nothing but reduce grinding time with no downside. As far as I can tell such a toggle wasn't included in this release, and I can't understand why. In my view it's as necessary as a speed up mechanic and could address one of the worst aspects of this genre.

Just bought, and began playing, this yesterday for the first time. The graphics/character models are dated,but the story is solid. Looking forward to playing through this legendary game!

Great run through Mark! But to be honest - I might be the only one that isn't too keen on FF7. I still like it and it's an excellent game but I just can't rave about it nor say it's my favorite game.
Besides, I have like 10 copies of this on all different things.

So would this game be impossible to beat with turn based combat off? I played this game once when I was a kid and loved everything about it except for the turn based combat, which as a kid, forced me to stop playing the game by the 2nd disc. The idea to return to this world and enjoy the story without the random battles really appeals to me. But not if I'll get stuck half way through the game cos I can't beat a boss.
There are cheats here as well so you can make yourself a beast. I just play the battles sped up. Mark
I wanted to play this game so badly when I was young but all I could get was a PC demo version. I played it repeatedly and was so sad to finish it. As an alternative, I read the script of game countless times, listening the OST.
Now, even though I know the entire plot, I’m tempted to play it because I can.
I was originally planning to get FF X, and it comes in 2 weeks.
What do you recommend more? between FF VII and FF X?? I don’t want to play two JRPG games in a row.

SwitchUp Ok so I finished the game yesterday. It was a memorable journey with likable characters and I don’t regret buying/playing it at all. Especially the 1st half of the story was amazing (disc 1). Disc 2~3 were somewhat disappointing, with a little bit confusing plot development and unfun minigames.
I’m not so sure about the difficulty curve. I fought every battle with relative ease until the last act (disc 3 northern cave), and there the enemies got absurdly stronger. I eventually used the cheat code there, because the place seemed like a point of no return, only with the final duel ahead. I was getting bored slightly and decided to finish the game there.
If I played it fully in late 90’s, it would have been the best game to me as well. There are some fresh elements even for current standards, and the music is simply pure perfection. I’m glad that I finally played this masterpiece. Better late than never.

So tempted to buy this as I loved it as a teen many years ago but I’m not sure. I remember often getting lost and not knowing where to go and I also remember getting some way into the game and I got to a certain battle that I could not win because I wasn’t strong enough and it really pissed me off big time. Yeh, I think I’ll pass but I may be tempted to buy the upcoming final fantasy 7 remake. Not even played the demo yet.
Now only the older ones on the system ( 1-6). If they put solely the VI on switch then I am alrdy happy. The VIII is a bit to much I guess to add but still the highlighted one of my childhood tho ( music was epic). Am excited to see the physical copies of the X and XII later on. :/// rip wallet.... conflicted on buying the Yoshi game or perhaps I wait till a price drop or sale.

And give the option of which translation to use! I love the improvements in the DS translation, but the original Woosley translation is so nostalgic!
Hi Mark. Yeah, it’s clear this one holds a special place for you as I feel you’re more forgiving than you were for FF IX. I’ve always preferred IX over VII and think it holds up better today. As you say though, the Switch screen is the best way to experience these gems and yeah, I feel lucky to have them both for the Switch.
BTW, did you manage to snag a physical copy of WoFF Maxima?

Lol. It seemed like it. Strangely other TH-camrs also thought the Switch price was the the most expensive when it and the PS4 are the cheapest 🤷♀️ A bit lazy of SE I grant you, but it is what it is and the best way to play it is on the Switch.

I think I've been spoiled by modern games. With the little time I have to play games now (I'm 32) vs when I was a kid (when this came out). My imagination won't let me play this game anymore which is kinda sad. I loved this game but graphically my aged brain won't be able to tolerate these dated graphics :(

I did finish the prequel, Crisis Core, on the PSP, but not all the missions.

Those new features like the "3x speed" are pure gold!! At that price and being so good I may play it at some point, at least to see what the fuss is all about :)
Oh and are you right about those summons animations!! Can they get repetitive!! I still remember Shiva in FFVIII in perfect detail (don't know why I recall that one in particular though)
