I'm always slightly amazed that these Thomann Synthesizer videos, particularly the ones with Feilx, don't get way more Likes and comments, because they are invariably great and very informative.
Yip, I agree. The Thomann videos are really high quality. It's nice to have more of an actual artists perspective than the usual technicians view point. I think that it might just need time, or maybe they need to brand it differently. Because when you think Thomann Synthesizers, you kind of just expect to have a shop pitching their wares at you. But it's not that at all. It's more like Artist showcases. Might be better to push the person to the fore, not the shop name. Like Felix presents ..., by Thomann Synthesizers.
When Felix let's his hair loose you know it's about to get serious :D The CS80 is a dream for everyone I think. Thanks for the amazing tutorial and inspiration again. @retrosound did a tutorial also once on how to create a CS80 blade runner sound with a casio CS-101. Any news on the Behringer CS80? :)
Thank you Felix from a synth fan since Apollo astronauts were still on the moon - long story but translating your Suoer 8 example here to about seven other softsynths (before getting an Obie to work!) provided me an essential lesson in the design differences between mono and poly synths - even mono softsynths with “free polyphony” - mono and poly synths are entirely different animals altogether! Well done.
Great video. When Loopops Deckards Dream appeard on YT, I immediately took my Novation Summit (that has way greater features than the REV2) to recreate the DD intro sound. And I succeeded 99%. It took some time though and asks for meticulously programming (please bear in mind that I program synths since the late 70's - and programming doesn't mean just twisting the fltr cutoff...) Of course, the CS and DD are great synths. But it is a mythical belief that their sounds can't be recreated on other synths. It's all about know-how and understanding synths in a deeper way and you also need gifted ears to. And obviously there will be (only little) difference in sound, because at the end they are all different synths. What you do here is even easier on a Waldorf Kyra since it has 4096 waveforms to choose from and up to 10(!) independent OSC's in a single patch!! Kyra is a heavily underestimated synth btw...
If you have a multi timbral hardware synth you can make each voice the same sound but have different lfo amounts on each one. Trigger the lfos or automate them in and out and you can get similar results. Works very well with the virus ti 😃
Everything exactly the same as on the Super 8 Patch. So you should be able to use the Super 8 section of the video to dial in the patch on the prophet rev 2. The Basic Idea is: 1. Layer: Pulse/Square & Saw Wave at equal volume being pulsewith-modulated by the same LFO (triangle or sine) 2. Layer: Pulse/Square & Saw Wave at equal volume being pulsewith-modulated by the same LFO (triangle or sine) but: slightly LFO rate & amount + OSC‘s slighlty detuned from Layer 1
@@ThomannSynthesizers Would love more prophet rev2 Patch videos from you Felix, you create some of the best sound design out of anyone with that synth. This patch particularly is something I've never heard come from a rev2, not even close. Great work!
The entire CS appeal came from few composers like Vangelis and cult movie tracks. no one heard these synths used like this before, therefore, you have the element of novelty and everlasting quality. But, aside from high end components, you have to add high end music poduction tools, from tape, preamps, compressors, mixer... all these things added to that Tears in Rain patch we all want to bleed for. It is easy to get it on REV2 because Curtis filter is somewhat zingy and brassy, but it releases too much of dynamics. I found this way more feeasible on Prophet 10, two stacked patches with one of them using poly mod on filter just a little bit, and another sending oscillator B to A frequency for some fm gnarl. Run that through Big Sky or Eventide Space and you will get your CS pad.
Also worth mentioning - DD has 12 DB filter. You have key tracking full on, which is very important for those giher frequencies. As for REV2, you are using key tracking on filter too.
What a friendly presentation. Thank you so much. Was there a little portamento in there? Will try to "fudge" this sound on my Roland JD-XA (analogue layer + digital layer). It won't sound the same, though I know it will still sound great. It's all about exploration for me.
Thank you for the patch notes! It’s a really good lesson on using the gear you have and how having a clear idea of what you want to make is worthwhile. What is your preferred poly aftertouch controller for the deckards dream? (I would recommend trying the hydrasynth, if you don’t have one. It feels great to play.)
Great vid! I'd love to hear the Deckard's Dream used with the Mercury7 reverb pedal that's supposed to replicate the same reverbs used by Vangelis. I have been enjoying Arturia's new CS-80 vst.
Thank you for this video! can anyone maybe explain how to achieve a saw and square stacked on each other on a HydraSynth? would a triangle saw wave suffice? or maybe 1 osc is a square, one osc is a saw, on each side of a multi... struggling a bit with that but everything else is excellent.
Good tutorial - you could literally achieve this on many, many VSTs. We forget that those old classic synths were actually super limited as far as capabilities and especially waveform types, they just had that nice analogue sound.
Will certainly try this on my Summit :) And actually could also be interesting to try an Axoloti patch that does something similar, but then have per voice retriggering of LFO's and such .. hmmm .. lots of ideas from this basic CS-80/DD model :)
This is lovely thank you! Q: I can see on your ableton set up, you're using the chord device to add a perfect 5th to the voice. On the rev2, which layer or osc are you pitching up?
Which free synth software best replicates the CS-80 in terms of being able to replicate the sounds we are all familiar with? I'm thinking of the free synths available from "Full Bucket Music" for example. Any recommendations?
@@artisans8521 well yeah the same can be said for literally every analogue hardware you bought in the eighties. But I am pretty sure you knew what I meant
@@alamunez I hadn't realized Thomann sold software... I mean, I'm not mad if Thomann wants to use their YT channel to advertise products they sell. Surge is also wayyy overkill for this application. I couldn't think of a free synth off hand that has two oscillator sections with sliders for square and saw level on each. I expect there are many, and probably Full Bucket Music has like 5 of them that are all awesome.
@@GeorgeLocke An ARP Odyssey has sliders for square and saw, if you set it up that way, and there are at least a couple of different free VST versions of it. I guess it's possible to play two at once, in a DAW, and detune them from each other.
Great video. I have to say though, the hardware sounds SO much nicer. I’m not always that guy but in this case, there is no competition. Just need to find a spare 5K.

The beauty of the Rev 2 is the dual stereo outs.
Gives you the freedom of being able to track both layers and do post FX independently.
I love mine.
Super nice that you mentioned loopop! The man is doing god's work. :)
Lovely video either way.
Thank you! Sounds fantastic on a Summit too, with a gently ramped Animate on Osc1’s Vsync for added occasional expression.

Interesting how playing with certain hardware opens our minds to new synthesis techniques that we can then apply elsewhere.

Arturias CS80 plugin + polyphonic aftertouch midi keyboard might be the best solution for that.
