    That was the best explanation of all the different POE standards I’ve seen yet. I think the fact that you struggled a little bit and had some trial and error in there made it clear / memorable. Thank you.

    I've got a difficult run into the back yard that currently has an AP-AC-Mesh on it. Adding one of these would let me also add a couple G3-Flex cams without crawling to that tight attic corner again. Hundred bucks versus getting all dirty and sweaty for an hour or so of swearing again.

    These little switches are awesome for in-room wired POE distribution when you only have one wired (POE) up link (e.g. multiple phones, phone and AP, etc. etc.). Also, regarding the comment about 24V passive...while Chris is absolutely correct that these switches do not output 24V passive, this is very easily adapted for by simply placing an instant 802.3af (accessory sold from Ubiquiti...they make indoor and outdoor varieties) inline with the output from the USW-Flex. Thee switches then afford you all the configurability available in unify...including 802.1x security, all the VLAN port profiles, etc. Again, this little thing...for $99 bucks is awesome!!!

    Thank you Chris for this review! I was searching for a small switch to power an exterior video intercom and the interior monitor (which require 802.3af) without additional power supplies in that area and this seems to be the winner :) I was a little disappointed that the nano switch didn't have a version with 802.3af but now I'm happy :D

    One thing no one has mentioned is the switch has a extended operating temperature, -40 - 149F at 25 W. I bought one to run in my attic. It is connected and powering two AC-Pros. The flex is powered from a SW-8 150w. Have had no issues

      Just to be 100% clear, it absolutely does not require BT to power "2" devices. I have a standard AF POE connection as the power/uplink and it powers three POE Sangoma IP telephones with no problem at all. the point is the power available with AF power is 15W total for the remaining 4 ports (minus a little for the switch itself)...and with an AT uplink you could easily power a couple cameras and phones etc. I have had these switches now since the day they made it out of the beta store...they are AWESOME (and I don't have a single one of them BT powered)!!!

  • @HunterLaska
    @HunterLaska 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This switch would be a good switch to put up in the attic for cameras pointed around the house! You wouldn't have to run power and install outlets, just run the ethernet cable and plug it all in. You could also plug in a nano station or two on the roof! All depending on poe power budgets of course.

    Sounds like an alternative to the EP-R6 that I use as pole "switch" at the moment.
    Especialy with "normal" PoE supported and newer Devices use less "24V Passiv" PoE.
    I'm also using US-8 Switches in my IT workshop at work, if at a spot more ports are needed, just drop a switch. It's verry helpfull, because one device could have it's own switch, yea... Firewall setup & testing with multible ports configured or multi port server and they need more then one physical port to handle the production load later.

    Be interesting to see what power draw reports in Unifi for the USW-Flex (on your small and large POE switch), as well as the end devices on the USW-Flex. Plugging the devices in one by one would quickly let you determine if they pull too much when added up.

    Great info on the switch itself but could you elaborate on adding the power injector and using the flex utility. Since the power injector burns a port, guessing the POE line coming in from the main switch negotiates to kill power just use the POE injector? Also reduces the number of usable ports to 4.

    I am buying a new house and I am planning on using two of these to power a combination of cameras and access points. I will be using the 8 port, 150 watt switch as my core switch, with these ran off of that. On one I am planning on installing 3 G3 Flex cameras; and the other will have 2 G3 Flex cameras and 1 Flex HD access point. Running both off of 802.3at should give me plenty of power for those devices, looking at about 12 watts on one and 18.5 watts on the other. Unfortunately, that only leaves me room for expansion on one of the switches, unless I decide to power one or both off an 802.3bt PoE injector.

    A note, I'm powering mine with a Unifi 24port 250W switch. I've got about a 100foot run to the Flex powered via 802.3at and then all my devices are anywhere from 15 to 30 feet of wire to cameras. I attempted to power 4 cameras on this, and it works fine during the day, but I continuously got dropouts at night when the IR lights started powering up. Cameras were drawing roughly 3 watts during the day, and 7-8 at night. Surprisingly the flex chose the same port to cut power to, or maybe just by design it just so happened to loose power on the same port, but it was always port 4. I reconfigured today, and thus far through the night, all 3 cameras are going strong. Still a handy device.

We have a limited number of runs of what appears to be Cat 5 cable in a building where it is either brick walls or lath and plaster, so running additional cables is cost-prohibitive, making a switch like this a very attractive alternative in terms of installation speed.

    I found a device that converts two 802.3at ports to one 802.3bt port (actually acts like an injector), you then switch the USW-Flex to “injector” mode (in general settings), and you have the full 45W output (it’s actually 45W not 46W).

    I'm currently powering 2 Dahua 4K POE Turret cameras from the USW-FLEX, which is currently connected to my US-8-150 Switch. For future expansion, I purchased a Ubiquiti POE-54V-80W Passive injector for more power. The Ubiquiti POE-54V-60W Passive Injector would also suffice. Something to keep in mind is that Ubiquiti states on their forums that the USW-FLEX requires 15W of power overhead to be available at all times, otherwise it will cause devices to not power or to reboot repeatedly, therefore, a 60W Injector at a minimum is needed to get the full power budget of 45W. So always power with 802.3 AT, BT, or the above mentioned injectors to provide enough power. To use a PoE Injector, you will need to set the following:
    Per UI-ShermanHsu: "The power source setting (is supported) on FW 4.0.31 and Controller 5.11.19 and later
    .
    From Controller 5.11.29+ the Power Source setting is under Config->General ->
    (Choose PoE Injector)
    From Controller 5.11.19 the Power Source setting is under Config->Services
    -> (Choose PoE Injector)
    Before UniFi 5.11.19 the following SSH commands you need to run to change the power source to PoE injector.
    echo "switch.power_source.status=enabled" >> /tmp/system.cfg
    echo "switch.power_source.mode=poe-injector" >> /tmp/system.cfg
    syswrapper.sh apply-config
    When powered USW-Flex by PoE-Injector, please set power source to PoE-Injector to get full power budget 45W."
    I love the USW-FLEX and plan on picking up two more ASAP. It's great for multiple cameras with a single Ethernet run (though I almost always run two as a CYA).

      I was going to say it says BT on the site but good to know it can startup with AT/AF as well even though power would be a lot less. Also didn't realize UB made a larger POE injector. A LOT Cheaper than some of the BT injectors i have been finding all over which cost more than the Flex here. How well does it run on the US-8-150 with those two cameras? Our vendor has both HikVision and Dahua unbranded that we are re-sellers though and we mainly get Dahua/Sibell as they tend to be more compatible with each other VS HikVision. Just got done doing a massive 70K quote for a community and 4K Camera PoE turret cameras that are Dahua (unbranded) and plan on using all Ubiquiti for everything so that any camera outage be tracked in a heart beat. Very large WiFi area using Prisms and what not with 30 stations of 2 cameras. Was going to use the US-8-60 as it is the two cameras, a Loco station, and the switch, and there won't be any adding on. The flex looks to big to put in the enclosure i am using though and it only like 6 bucks cheaper, but the being able to put multiple IP where only one was before with this will come in very handy down the road.

      @@drtweak87 It's cheaper because it is passive and does not negotiate power, so you have to be a bit more careful about plugging in the POE-54V-80W or 60W version. All 4 pairs carry power on this model, just like the BT standard. The switch itself isn't that big and if you leave the bottom shroud off, since it will be in an enclosure, it shouldn't be too tight, but could you consider a slightly larger enclosure if necessary?

    I know I am very late to this post, but our Yealink devices can use up to 17w of PoE budget, so even by itself on 802.11af it would be expected to have issues. On AT, it would hardly be able to operate with another device on the switch simultaneously. IP Phones are not a great thing to try to use with these low PoE budget switches as they use far more power than a typical PoE device would such as an AP or simple IP cameras. The Professional series of Unifi cameras though, like the G4 Pro in this video are also heavy PoE users as well, which is likely why it did not like the lack of power available even on AT.

    *** I HAVE A VIDEO REQUEST PLEASE ***
    Hi Chris,
    I found this product extremely disappointing considering that it only offers a crummy 20w of power when plugged up to an AT switch like the US-8-150W, which can supply 150w of power and is capable of powering up to 12 x G3 Pro Camera's which use 12.5w of power each. But this crummy USW-Flex extender only allows 1 x G3 Pro Camera to be powered by it (12.5W) as the USW-Flex maxes out at 20W on AT Switches.
    That is until I discovered the '50V/60W POE Injector' you spoke of which would boost the USW-Flex's power up to 46W meaning it could power up to 3 x G3 Pro's
    The POE Injectors only cost $30 here in Australia... I'm sure someone like you would maybe have 3 cameras lying around that could suck at least 12.5W of power each out of the USW-Flex??
    Here is the data-sheet for the POE Injectors: dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/poe/PoE_Adapters_DS.pdf
    Before I make the decision to buy the USW-Flex if you could do another review video on it covering the below 3 things that would be MASSIVELY APPRECIATED:
    1. Power up the USW-Flex via a '50V/60W POE Injector'
    2. Connect the '50V/60W POE Injector' up to an AT powered switch such as the 'US-8-150W'
    3. Connect 3 x Cameras to the USW-Flex which will suck at least 12.5w of power each out of it (I plan on connecting 3 x G3 Pro's up to it)
    ^ All the spec sheets state that my above plan will work but considering the failure you had in this video when using your AT powered switch, it'd be good to see a working example connecting at least 3 cameras to the USW-Flex without us having to upgrade to a BT Powered switch.
    Thanks for your consideration & for your great work, I hope you can do another review video :)

    • @jdillinger2307
      @jdillinger2307 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lord Bones - I wasn’t disappointed at all, remember that your 150w US-8-150W can’t supply more power to a single port than the supported PoE class. 802.3at (POE+) has a maximum of 25.5W per port, assuming some power loss in the cable and the power required to run the USW Flex switch itself, I’m impressed that 20W remains available to the downstream ports. Go 802.3bt (POE++) or use the power injector. By the numbers, It should support your use case. With the power injector, the US-8-150W will be irrelevant to the power budget.

      I wish I found this comment when trouble shooting my flexhd ap and 3g flex camera off the flex switch.... I powered the flex switch from the POE-50-60W(EU). and my AP kept rebooting, not adopting and all that fun. I finally figured that one needs to indeed enable the poe injector as power source. two warnings here... it seems to work without that setting but only with limited output power, and once enabled gives a 46W. and this setting is NOT in the mobile app which I was using on the ipad... you need to open the unifi network webapp in a browser where the setting can be found. the webui shows under the switch’s overview the poe consumption and budget. Once I figured this out, it worked just fine. 56days uptime without a glitch, with the flexhd ap, and 2 flex 3g cameras downstream.

      Exact same thing here... Wanting to plug this up to my US-8-150W switch which runs on 802.3af/at (AT Mode) meaning it can only offer a max of 20w of power according to the USW-FLEX Spec Sheet. My Switch offers 150w of power which can easily power up my G3 Pro Cameras which use 12.5w of power each... I wanted to use this USW-Flex to reduce wirepulls all the way back to my switch, but this crummy device can only power up 1 of my cameras as it only offers a max of 20w??... Pretty weak considering my switch can handle 150w.
      Option 1 - Run all those cables back to your switch
      Option 2 - Upgrade to the USW-Industrial (BT) switch & sell your AT switch on eBay
      Option 3 - Get a 2nd US-8-150W switch & locate that at the other end of your house meaning you only have to run 1 cable back to your main data cabinet
      Option 4 - Relocate your existing US-8-150w switch closer to the center of your house & further away from your router meaning you can run just 1 ethernet cable to it
      ^ All options above suck really. If an AT powered switch can handle 150W of power, this USW-Flex is pretty disappointing to only accommodate for 20w of power
