  • I found another shed with no switch. Unacceptable. So I installed the Unifi Switch Flex for future connected projects 🙂

    I have been using these for our outdoor work areas for the last several years. To use the power adapter, you have to switch the interface back to classic. Then select the flex and under options, it shows power source. You then select POE injector. Then the Flex will work correctly once you plug in devices.

    • @LarsKlintTech
      @LarsKlintTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Ah, is that how it worked! I was wondering why it wouldn't recognise it. I might ask UBNT why that feature is gone, cause that would be a nice visual.

      ahh. This is interesting to find. I don't understand why ubiquiti doesn't port or translate their previous options from the old interface into the new so the options and such still work. At least until they get their new interface up to the same bar as the old

      I did read once on the UI Community forum that the "warning" you get, is now design. UI-Glenn told that. My guess is that that is the way at the new GUI.
      However, when you connect it to another UniFi switch (and they are adopted in the same controller of course) you will see the correct amount of PoE budget. This since the controller knows what PoE type is given on the port it is connected to.

  • @Deraco1
    @Deraco1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think the reason that your getting a unknown power source message is since its using the standard 48v passive PoE injector (assuming it's passive). There won't be any communication on to how much wattage can be used from the PoE circuitry. Its just as if you had your own PoE injector plugged into the switch. It is interesting to note that Ubiquiti didn't seem to put any communication smarts in the power supply for this error to go away. When you plug that switch into a PoE switch, the switches negotiate on how much power it can provide and receive thus knowing the power maximum

    A recommendation for your setup is if you have the plugs nearby is to just get a 60W poe injector that they sell and that gives you the 4ports back total on the flex with the LAN on the injector. Working on a video currently to have this totally solar and independent from electrical power going to post on our farm page. Technically the POE injector that comes with the box is a DC to AC power injector meant for solar MPPT systems kinda like the UISP Wave stuff.

    I got the Flex roughly when it came out and its been a perfect match with my Protect and AP´s. Currently I have one of those outdoor boxes with a flex at the back of the house which powers 2x G4 Pro and a Floodlight. The second flex is just mounted in a covered overhang on my shed and on both I have plugged the unused ports with portcovers from my 8 port Industrial 450w. I really like the PoE++ idea because I can daisychain my gear (24p Pro or 8p Industrial w/PoE++) -> Flex -> Flex Mini or various Unifi gear. So I just need to draw some net cables to certain junctions and then power all my gear via those cables, no powerlines needed.

    Not sure why you wouldn't want to power this from POE switch itself? This gives the flexibility to have the switch backed up if your main switches are backed up, as well as a 5th port/uplink. I run multiple pro switches with BT already in them and have a number of the Flex switches. So far I haven't needed BT based power levels on them, as most items plugged into them are pretty low wattage. You can always use a BT based injector if you need that much power, and that could be powered by the main switches again to use existing UPS power. Also helps if you get lightning and you can help eliminate EMP/ESD during nearby lightning strikes by having common single point grounding. Keep up the good work sir! 🤠👍

    • @LarsKlintTech
      @LarsKlintTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All very valid points Chris. I could use the incoming CAT6 cable to power it I suppose, but I wanted to show the full setup in the video, as it comes out of the box. I am also considering using the stand alone PoE adaptor that Unifi sells, which I used initially on my first Switch Flex. In this case so far I agree, I don't need PoE++/BT power.

    So @statto80 astutely pointed out what is the major flaw of this unit. The power unit should be a 2 port design so that only port 1 is used and there are then 4 ports available. That’s why I never use that flex enclosure but purchase the poe++ adapter separately.

    • @LarsKlintTech
      @LarsKlintTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it is a major flaw, but it would be a nice addition. The other Switch Flex I have is also powered by the PoE adaptor in the utility case, but I am uplinking via NanoStation which needs PoE power anyway, so in that scenario it makes no difference. And I do need the enclosure as it is completely weather proof.

    This product confuses me so much. I want to love it and use it in the same manner, but giving up 2 ethernet ports to get a return line, when using the Flex/Utility Box's included POE injector feels just wrong. For a midspan with AC power this can be fine. But it would have been incredibly nice to have a traditional POE injector with LAN output to use the first port as a LAN option for local devices not mounted at the same location as the pole.
    Using another BT injector is fine but then you just have extra parts laying around that can not be used with anything but 60w BT devices... that do not need lan access.

    • @SeijinSA
      @SeijinSA 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2
