    I love this engine. I'm from germany and i got it in my B5.5 Passat 4Motion. It runs great even with stock performance (131hp 310nm torque) and you can really open these engines up just with a simple remap. Mine has 180hp and 420nm and it really makes it a fast car. The VTG turbo gives you amazing throttle response. I would really recommend picking a 1.9 tdi with a vgt turbo for a swap. For swapping you need the engine harness and you need to turn off the immobilizer in the ecu. Most people who do remaps can do that. Greetings from germany and keep up the great vids!

    I've got a running driving ALH (2001) TDI swap in a 2001 XJ Cherokee. It's really a pretty easy swap to do, though not cheap. I did not use the Cotybuilt kit, I put a lot of other components together to make mine and I am very happy that I did. I retained all factory Jeep gauges in the dash, and with the stock turbo and just a stage 1 tune (where I started out) it could hold 75 on the highway and got 32 MPG. I've upgrade the turbo, intake, injectors, and air cleaner, and the power is incredible. 0-60 is very impressive and passing power is way better than the 4.0, as witnessed by the gray cloud in the rearview around the vehicles previously seen through my windshield. It's a ton of fun and well worth it. Not quite V8 power, but it's lighter, and the fuel economy is significantly better.

    Hey, Rich! I did a 1.9 tdi swap to a '84 VW microbus camper a couple of years ago, but that one is sold for long now. as the bus has been a diesel before the swap (and therefore already water cooled), the whole swap was mechanically easy, the engine fitted to the original gearbox (as South Africa Busses had these engines installed from factory also!) and I had to fabricate the two engines mount brackets by myself. The main job was installing the electrics, and as I didn't have anyone to flash and modify the engine computer, I went straight forward and even put the key-sensor in to deactivate the original immobilizer system... In the end that engine with its only 90 hp ate up three gearboxes due to its higher torque. The first one was a modified 5-gear box, that I modified with south african add-ons (like additional oil cooling guides and pipes inside and a longer 5th gear ration sprocket), that one only lasted about 50 kms :) All in all a nice ride, comfy and quick (compared to the original 50 hp diesel). Loved that bus though, had to sell it as my job expected longer highway runs in shorter times.... Right now I am projecting an 83 Suzuki LJ80 / Jimny with an engine swap from the original F80 Engine (800 ccm / 38 hp) to an A BIT more modern F10A Engine (1000 cc, 41 hp). That ones going to be my second daily driver (only when its not raining, as I only have a bikini top on it and no doors). All the best from Northern Germany! If I get to the US nearby your workshop, I will definitely give you a shout and show up for a chat! Christian

    I had a Golf 1.9 tdi, it was the best diesel I ever had until it died from flood damage. Great engines and I love the sound they make. In Europe them engines are good for 250,000 miles easy with minimal maintenance.
    Only thing I would say in check the cam-belt tensioner pulley stud as it tend to bend and snap on higher mileage engines, anything after 150,000miles i would check it or just straight up put a new one in.

      The one in dewclaws jeep is a indirect injected 1.6 turbo VW engine. it's a much older design than the TDI and was found in rabbits and jettas in the 80 and 90s. I'm guessing the reason that he chose that engine is because it's fully mechanical and a much easier swap than something like a TDI.

    I put a TDI out of a 98 Jetta into an 81 Rabbit pickup. Some challenges were converting truck and pedal cluster to use hydraulic clutch and drive by wire pedal. Also fitting intercooler and associated piping under the hood. Trans swap was easy for me because I stayed VW. Motor mounts on TDI same as 1.6 NA too, so not a problem. I found a wiring harness diagram online and had it printed on big paper so I could trace all wires and delete what I didnt need. Then it was a matter of making new work with old. It runs and drives but is very def a work in progress.

    I've put a 1.9tdi AHF engine in my off road buggy which I've fabricated from scratch. Chipped the ECU to 140hp and alongside the low weight of the vehicle it goes like stink! Getting the engine wiring harness to work outside of the donor car took a bit of head scratching but the end result is actually quite simple. The ECU has had the immobiliser "turned off" so it can run without the instrument cluster and key.

      If you haven't already bought the Cummins, take a look at the Mercedes OM-605 2.5 liter diesel. It's an easy (stock internals) 400 hp 5500 rpm diesel that can use GM transmissions with adapters. Diesel Pump UK makes adapters. Personally, I would use a BMW 6 speed manual, strong, fast, light, and cheap.

    Rich, the TDI, I'm not sure which generation TDi was used in the Jeep? Was it a 1.9TDi from MK4 Golf/Jetta 1998-2004 - ASZ 130 or ARL 150 (EDC15 type ECUs)? Or 1.9 TDi from MK5 Golf/Jetta 2004-2009 (EDC16 type ECUs)? Either way you can have the immobiliser defeated on the ECU (I do this myself sometimes for helping people with conversions) so that it can run without the instrument cluster and without a matched keyfob. If you don't defeat the immobiliser on the ECU then it will stall just after you turn start the engine. In normal conditions the key has a transponder in it, which is coded to the instrument cluster and the cluster is coded/paired to the ECU. I'm pretty sure for any conversion you do, you'll not want to use a VW key or VW instrument cluster, so you'll immo defeat the ECU and then you could use an Android app on a tablet reading data over OBD for MPH/RPM/fuel level/coolant temperature etc for a DIY dashboard instrument cluster. I enjoy the videos so it's nice to give something back for once :)

    • @Franksey180
      @Franksey180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here in the UK from the MK4 Golf platform, we found the "ASZ" 130 BHP engine (as standard) seemed to be the sweet spot as its durable and can make similar power to the "ARL" 150 BHP engine. The ARL engine has had a lot of failures with "chocolate camshafts", so I'd avoid that one. From the MK5 Golf platform the 1.9 TDi "BLS" engine is often junked by owners in some vehicles and they actually go back to the MK4 platform to install an ASZ engine as its tougher. Some people replace the 1.9 BLS engine with the 2.0 BKD engine which is also a MK5 platform engine. From the later engines I'd avoid the 1.6 TDi "CAYD" (2011-2015) as they seem to have unreliable fuel injectors which are not cheap to replace, the 2.0 140 TDi "CFHC" common rail engine also 2011-2015 seems to be another good one. Could be good to pin this post so other people can add some TDi advice?

    • @Franksey180
      @Franksey180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So a MK5 platform car, EDC16 ECU, they'll have defeated the immobiliser to help with the conversion, its straight forwards with the right software to turn it off. I think the "BEW" is a US/North America engine, but similar to the European "ATD", 100 BHP / 177 LBS-FT as standard. A torquey diesel is a great idea for your Jeep, seems to suit it's character.

    The VW TDI engine is actually fairly popular as an airplane engine, especially in Europe were aviation gasoline is hard to find. It's got a pretty low power to weight ratio by airplane standards, but it makes up for it with WAY better fuel economy than gasoline aircraft engines. To be fair, however, for air use you should only get the ones specially rebuilt for the purpose, as the stock ones just can't handle being run at 70% power all the time.
