  • In this video, I continue my 2017/2018 Snowbird trip series with a look at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Arizona.
    First, I show you our route from Saddle Mountian BLM up to Cottonwood with including a two-night stopover in the Table Mesa Rec Area, a free boondocking campground about 15 miles north of Phoenix.
    Once in the Dead Horse Ranch State Park, we celebrate the beagle's 15th birthday, and you join Angie and me for a hike around the park. I show you the camping areas, the surrounding countryside, and the fishing ponds.
    The video ends with some advice and directions to find maps and information for those looking to do some boondocking in the beautiful National Forest lands that surround Sedona.

    God, I can remember when Angie was a young dog!! We stayed in Dead Horse state park last year. Very nice park!! We also took a day trip to Jerome. No place to park so we didn’t get to stop in the cliff hanging town. We started over the mountain that tight S turn mountain road. Several bikes were coming down the mountain with significant speed. I tried to move over to give them plenty of room to keep them off the edge of the mountain. We cut the side wall out of a truck tire on a chunk of rock that had rolled off the mountain. Had a hell of a time finding a place to get off the road enough to change the tire. Ended up going over the mountain to Prescott to find a tire store to get a replacement late on a Saturday afternoon. Not one of our finer moment!! As beautiful as Sedona is, we really felt that it was a good place to avoid due to over crowding. Beautiful country that has been spoiled by too many people. Great job as always, Ray!!!

    Aren't dogs just the greatest companions. Last year my wife and I lost our little terrier who was a little over 14 due to probably a brain tumor which was causing her to have seizures. It was sad and very difficult to go through since we don't have any children and she's all that we had. We must have been blessed somehow because just 3 months later we were presented with a rare opportunity to adopt another terrier which looked very similar to the one that we lost. We did and he has turned out to be a really kind and gentle dog. We saved him and he saved us.

    Jerome is a old copper mining town. The mine is under the town, and the streets are very steep and laid out switch back style. Lots of great places to eat. Worth the trip but your right, don’t take the RV. Class B probably OK. Love you old pup, hope she has many more trips to take.

    I finally visited the park this week, but I didn't really see the big attraction. Personally, I much prefer to go north a ways and boondock where there's no neighbors and a hell of a lot better view. And it's not 30 bucks a night!

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We drove through the BLM lands for a look, trust me there were way more neighbors in the boonies ;) It was Spring break for the kids and RVs every bloody where! Also with the recent rains, most spots were a red mud pit. Will have to try a different time of year, Cheers, Ray

    • @ihatetrump3603
      @ihatetrump3603 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BLM land? The only BLM land I know of is just a few miles east of Cottonwood, which IMO was terrible. I usually go about 10 miles north of Cottonwood and then west. That's the only good boondocking I know of in the area. But I would be interested in learning of other places here. Judging by the condition of the roads this trip and how green everything is, they must have gotten a lot of rain recently. The worst I have seen in the years I have been coming here.

    Thanks for a great, informative video. One question: you mention steep grades heading north to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. How steep are they? I just Googled it, and found a site where it mentions 6% grades. We are fine with that, but if the grades get much worse, we would think of cancelling our planned trip to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Our truck slows right down when we get to 8% or more. Thanks.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out this page - www.mountaindirectory.com/sample/arizona.html Look at the #10 triangles t will give you the info on the I17 grades. It's Interstate so they stay around 6% max. Our truck was pretty old 1994 and weak cooling fan so had issues. Our new Ram 6.7 Cummins would fly up them. :) Cheers, Ray

    I don't remember climbing up 17 to get to Sedona but I wasn't pulling anything. I JUST purchased a 18 ft. Viking that I'm going to pull with my Toyota FJ and wondering if that would be too much of a climb for her. Thoughts? Thanks

      Yeah, it's amazing how a hill doesn't seem like much until you start towing a load. :) Here is a good website to check elevations changes on a route - www.flattestroute.com/?from=Phoenix%2C+AZ%2C+USA&to=Sedona%2C+AZ%2C+USA&travelMode=Driving&measurementMode=miles
      You'll have to check the weight specs for towing If you're near the limits of the vehicle it could be a problem. Best to choose a lower gear and take it slower up the hills to avoid overheating. Anytime you see a sign on a highway that advises folks to turn off the AC you know that the hill is a long one and can tax an engines cooling system and there is such a sign heading up I17 - www.aaroads.com/west/arizona017/i-017_nb_exit_248_02.jpg Not trying to scare you, RVs go up it all the time, just good to know beforehand. Ambient air temps can have a big effect so good to tackle the route in the cooler morning hours. Cheers, Ray

      Thanks so much Ray. My truck is supposed to be rated for 5000 and the trailer is 2800 dry, I'm just a real paranoid. Guess I could pull over and cool off, wish I could afford a new truck.

    Another great video. I love how you integrate Google Earth with your Vlogs. Please continue. Looks like a beautiful State Park. Did you make it over to Jerome by chance? And that beagle looks like she had a great birthday.

    Have you made any cooling mods to your truck?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it just has the stock tow package with the transmission cooler and the large rad. The main problem is the old 94 diesel only has 190 HP and 385 FT LBS torque so puts a lot of stress on it dragging 9500 lbs of fifth wheel up steeper high elevation grades. I think my clutch fan is getting a little weak as it doesn't sound near as loud as it did in the past, maybe it's not fully locking up.

    What is an average monthly amount for camping? $30/night would get expensive

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AZ State parks don't have monthly rates as far as I know, so if you want to stay in one of the state parks you have to bite the bullet. We spend most of our time free camping on BLM or Forest lands so can splurge every once in a while.

    Careful back in Table Mesa. Even the BLM rangers will recommend not to camp there. A number of "squatters" have decided to shoot at people back in there , thinking they are infringing on their
    property.
