  • Feb 2015 found us RVing through south eastern Arizona. My wife loves photography so while researching a place to camp I found out about Whitewater Draw Wildlife area, close to Tombstone.
    www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreati...
Every winter thousands of Sandhill Cranes hang out in the shallow waters here. The refuge allows free overnight parking for RVs in a small roundabout area. Perfect! Every morning just before sun rise the cranes take flight filling the air with thousands of birds. Quite the amazing sight but also amazing sound wise as they begin to cackle excitedly as the dawn breaks.
In this video I'll give you a look at the overnight camping area, the early morning flight of the birds and some other highlights from our short 3 night visit. Also at the end I have a collection of my still images I took during the visit.
We had a good time and met some other cool RVing folks while there. I highly recommend a stop over if you love bird watching and photography. ;)

I’m late to the party but Kearney, NE is another Sandhill Crane watching hot spot. 600,000 will refuel in the Platte River valley from late February to early April on their way north. Mid to late March is a great time to go.

That sound the birds make is so cool! Almost a purr. Nice capture of them taking flight.

Very cool place, Ray! That duck is a Northern Shoveler.

The sandhills are also found nesting in Gray's Lake Idaho. You can hear them all of the time during the summer.

You find the most amazing places. I'll have to add that to my list. There's a Sandhill Crane Festival in Othello WA, so the population is expanding. They sure are interesting birds and make an odd noise. That was a spoonbill duck I believe at the end. Thanks for the awesome video.

Yeah, someone else told me its a Northern Shoveler. What a bird brain to get that wrong. :)

Thanks for the great video. Gonna have my DW watch it. She will probably whip out her bird book and attempt to identify everything there...if she doesn't already know.

I checked and these birds have a very large migratory route. Othello,Wa. is on the edge of a national wildlife refuge and a great place for all kinds of wildlife watching.

We were there in the middle of February and it was nice with lots of birds. Any earlier and it still could be cold, the elevation is up around 4000 feet.
