  • Howdy! In this one we cover eight end grain cutting board designs I created from cross cutting and combining two face grain boards. Like many new woodworkers, I jumped into building cutting boards. They are a great learning project, but I become somewhat bored with the basic face grain boards.
    To change it up, I cross cut two face grain boards and combined them and the end results were beautiful. This video shows how 8 of them came out and provides some explanation and tips along the way. Hope you enjoy them and some full build videos are coming soon.

    I don’t think it is but I use an orange wood called Osage orange once in a while. Nice job on the boards. Definitely an addictive hobby.😂

      Hey, sorry for the late response and appreciate it. Could be Osage, but that doesn't sound familiar. One day the name will pop into my head and I'll have to sprint to a computer and post it...haha!

    Thank you for the video, it is really informative. Just incase you weren’t joking the easiest way to pronounce Wenge is whengay.

    Great work on those boards. I made some using those same techniques you displayed in your video. Have you sold any of your boards? What patterns or styles are you going to come up with next?

      @cecilferris1163 Thanks for the comment! Only sold a few to family members but hopefully I'll be good enough to sell some to outsiders soon. So far I've done these endgrains, a few of the woven boards and face grains. I'm doing some chessboards now which should be posted up shortly then might get back to some more cutting boards - there are some great examples out there. Would love to see yours if you post any up!

    Are these exotic woods safe for food? Beautiful work btw.

      @samizook1 - good question. As I understand it some of the exotic woods can cause allergies in some situations so always good to check before you pick a wood. Other than that, as long as you avoid any overly porous woods where food (and therefore bacteria) could get caught in the grain, I think they should be fine. Most of my boards are used primarily as charcuterie boards so they are not cut into (no chipping concerns). Thanks for the comment and question!

    As someone new to woodworking I’ve reached that stage where I few friends have asked me if I could make a cutting board? So I’ve watched a number of videos and my question 🙋‍♂️ to you is…why do you not cut a channel around you edge of your boards like I’ve seen so many do ? BTW your stuff is fantastic 👍

      Howdy Simon! Thanks for visiting the channel and the comment/question. Congrats on and welcome to the woodworking obsession...haha. On the juice grooves, I have added a few to some of my boards, and also have ruined a few boards trying to cut a juice groove as well. I decided it was not worth the effort/risk on most of the boards since they are being used more as serving pieces and charcuterie boards rather than people actually cutting on them. With that said, there are some GREAT vids on how to cut a juice groove on the boards if you decide to go that route - here is one I think does a great job explaining a few different methods (Tamar does wonderful videos) - th-cam.com/video/F1Rl2fxzU6s/w-d-xo.html.

    Have you tried mixing face grain with end grain?

    • @HowdiesWoodwork
      @HowdiesWoodwork  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Howdy, on the first board I put a edgegrain piece on both sides but I would not recommend mixing them too much. As I understand it the wood will naturally move/expand as it gets wet and dries. Having the grains aligned reduces the risk of cracking or broken glued edges. With that said, feel free to try it out if you want and let us know how it works!

    Is that white glue water proof.

      Thanks for the comment - yes, it is Titebond III and they advertise it as being waterproof. Just be sure to get "III" as they also sell a less expensive Titebond I and Titebond II.

      Just to family, friends and locally for now. I have a full time job and am primarily a hobbyist for the time being.
