  • Got my hands on some beautiful padauk boards with heartwood / sapwood and a stunning end-grain pattern. Combining it with some very white hornbeam. Excited to see how these will turn out, there is enough to make two large boards.

Looks great. I am having a problem in that the padauk is constantly secreting oils to the surface. I can constantly wipe off orange residue. Do you have this issue with padauk and if so how do you handle that?

Hi Matt! Thank you for your kind words. I definitely know what you are talking about, with end-grain padauk. Typically I do the mineral oil bath for a few minutes, but if it's padauk I do it for a shorter amount of time now. I also let it stabilize for several days afterwards. Doing it this way I haven't had any issues with it secreting oils. Definitely after adding the top wax layer sealing off those vessels. The orange residue is padauk dust trapped in the vessels. I suggest blowing off your board with compressed air or even a quick wipe with a damp rag before the oiling.
