Always heard from the ammunition specialists that cylinder choke is the most versatile choke on a shotgun barrel. Able to shoot any type shell without damaging the barrel. No problems with slugs, buckshot or bird shot. Not great for longer distances unless you use Federal Flight Control. Always heard slugs in full choke will damage the barrel.
Bought a lot of these military grade shot shells back when the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were happening. Many were sold by Cabela's at the time. Not from the government. All 00-buck was production over runs that were sold off. Hard to get nowadays.
Other great shotgun shell makers to consider are Bernnike and Fiocchi. Especially the slugs. Remington really needs to step up and make a premier line of products. Especially some like Federal does with the Federal Flight Control wadding. You really can expect more performance at longer shots using Federal Flight Control. I've seen what Flight Control does at 3-Gun Competitions. It's simply awesome.

There's definitely nothing wrong with a basic cylinder choke, it will do decent enough with pretty much everything you would need it to in most average scenarios. You can fire any standard lead rifled foster style slug through full chokes just fine without causing any damage as long as the shotgun isn't some kinda antique with a twist steel barrel or something. Remington even specifically says that their rifled slugs can be shot through any choke right on the box. We have also done a full test like this with the Flite Control shells as well if you have not seen it. We definitely saw some very interesting results that don't necessarily match what a lot of people typically believe about them either, so it's definitely worth checking out

I would say his , I was expecting that 50 yard spread at the 30 yard mark, I am with you nothing wrong with those for a 40 yard close in deer or hog shot. Pretty impressive, That 11-87 gets better looking every time I see it, gee I want one. Good job Matt you really have your professionalism lined up.

In Afgan used these shells by US army in Benelli M4.
Full choke is best for all type buckshot. Increase velocity and tight pattern.
At 40 yard definitely kill man.
At this Thaliban not have minimum helmet or armor.😂

Nice test Matt. After examining the 30, 40 and 50 yard patterns I had a thought. Look at each pattern and subtract the two widest pellets. Perhaps those were the two that were sitting on top of the stack. So you have a seven pellet group at each distance that is significantly smaller and well centered on the target. I was amazed by that. If you were hunting a deer or a hog, you would have seven pellets and whatever size that was that was much closer to a torso size shot.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, you could always subtract the possible flyers, but I typically don't for the sake of consistency. It definitely wasn't a bad performing shell, but the Federal Flite Control shells are quite a bit better when it comes to holding a tight pattern

Cykinder choke for home defense... Full for hunting. Good test.
Edit: they use the same cushion wad as their rifled slugs. Interesting.

At 25yrds, out of our issued Mossbergs these shells usually have some wild flyers. I'm sure with better chokes it does better.
And yes this is the buck shot that we are issued. I have also been issued Winchester in the commerical looking red hull version as well.

@@matttyreeoutdoors I think they might be a different spec, but mil will buy 'off the shelf equivalent' items if the actual spec stuff isn't available. But also the red hull shells were overseas so they might've been older stock that could've been bought by a different agency too. You never know where something came from sometimes.

Glad the fly made it out of there HAHAHAHA
As far as the shells go... I'd say get it if you can get a REALLY, REALLY good price on it for HD or deer at 30-35 yards and under. But it is not a $1 rd shell IMO.

Steel BBs are definitely no replacement for 00 buck, but I suppose they would still work in a home defense scenario if its what you had to work with

Would look a lot better without that mysterious 9th pellet flyer. Now see if the "Buck Kicker" choke will do better.
If you can test the Monarch from Academy which is the cheapest buckshot I can find ($13 for 25 round box)
Grabbed some of it in 20ga #1 buck 9 pellet with a mod choke in the youth 500 it is crazy tight pattern! The 12ga 00 seems OK at best. Absolutely love your content.
