That made me laugh. I’m doing the exact (sort of) job on my old 244 DLS, which has a carb - not fuel injected (so no need for the in tank pump). It’s a complete pain in the backside but on the plus side I haven’t had to fish the float out (yet). The new sender unit works outside of the tank but as soon as I put it in the tank it doesn’t work, I think the positioning is perhaps wrong. That’s the next battle!! Thanks for sharing
I haven't scanned the whole video, did you say why you replaced pump, what was the symptom? In my '88 240 I had a dead pump but the car ran perfectly all winter, then it would die in summer heat after 20 mins or so down the road.. after a few minutes cooling off it'd run fine again for a while.. like that on/off again. This was the main pump overheating and shutting down without the help of the tank pump to keep cooling fuel thru it and of course the extra heat overworking itself in the first place. The in-tank pump drew nominal current, measured at fuse box with ammeter! Go figure! New tank pump fixed all just fine. Thanks for your video, super nice wagon there. Please keep it going. btw, I had symptom for a summer, then winter OK, then following summer finally diagnosed it on the 2nd summer failings.
Hi, my fuel gauge wasn't working so I replaced the sender unit in the hope that was the problem. It was. The in tank pump is part of the sender unit so replaced that too, although not sure if the old pump was working or not. I figured perhaps not as main fuel pump sounded very noisy before and I reckon its a bit quieter now - although that might just be my imagination.
@@xlr82u Yes, noise is not good, it was probably going bad, replace was perfect opportunity, excellent! btw, I just bought a '90 wagon and gently rocking it fwd/back by hand on the level you'll hear clunk clunk clank coming from the tank!!! I can bet it's either whole sending unit tree swinging in there hanging by the wires or the pump hanging by its' wires and clunking against the tank wall !! I post results later after I have a look in there.. !!
Really good video on the process, I love that you actually said how you did stuff, and not just what you did. I'm looking to replace this stuff on my '90 240 GL currently, and I can assure you mine is more corroded and caked in grime than yours was 😂 what brand/supplier did you go for in the end? I can see it's an aftermarket unit.
Hi Adam, thanks for the comments. I fitted a Fuel Sender and O ring from ClassicSwede - www.classicswede.org/shop/240-petrol-tank-sender-unit-with-pump I also bought a new K-Jetronic Main Fuel pump to carry around should the existing (original) one decide to give up on me!
@@xlr82u Ah nice one, thanks for that, I didn't realise yours was a KJET, mine's an LH2.4, although I'm guessing the sender assembly is common between the two :)
@@adzib1823 yes the sender and in tank pump is common to all with fuel injection I think. Main fuel pumps differ from what I can tell so check if you order one, but main fuel pump isn't essential to replace unless you want to. I did put a new fuel filter on a few months before doing the sender - see recommission video 😀

I didn't cut anything out, my assistant wasn't always on hand to video, so apologies about that. I explain the methodology in the video as best I can, but from memory it came out fairly easily and in tact. 45 degrees I think was a useful angle and work it out by jiggling. Getting the sod back in however... well, that's the difficult part. Good luck!!

Good luck with positioning the float. It's a pig of a job but so satisfying when you get it right.

How the gell did you get the sending unit out and why did you cut that part. I can't figure out how it comes out and my knuckles are bleeding!
