Amber's chair dancing is awesome. I could totally picture her (especially with the long hair she's currently sporting) in a long hippy skirt, a flower painted on one cheek and peace sign on the other, bare foot and dancing freely (as most flower power children did back in the day) in the field at Woodstock. 😊

The version from "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" is fire! Rita Coolidge, Donna Washburn, Claudia Lennear and others provide the backing vocals, Jim Price launches into a bebop trumpet solo that Bobby Keys picks up and carries forward in a sax solo for the ages. Sweet!

This was Joe’s most iconic song in my opinion! No one sounds like Joe Cocker. Jennifer Warren convince him to record a song with her “Up where we belong”. It was a hit even though the pair seemed like total opposites in music genre. But the juxtaposition of his wild raspy voice and her sweet, angelic voice really worked. 👍❤️

Per Songfacts: Dave Mason wrote this song and recorded it with his group Traffic in 1968. Included on their self-titled second album, it was released as a single but barely nicked the charts, bubbling under at #123 in America and not placing at all in the UK. The following year, Joe Cocker recorded what has become the most popular version of the song, taking it to #69 in the US with a more upbeat rendition. He included it in his rain-soaked set at Woodstock.

Joe Cocker puts his whole soul into his vocals. Mary Clayton is one of the background singers on this track, she is fantastic. Mary also put is all on the line when she sings (example: her duet with Mick Jagger on Gimme Shelter). Like Joan Baez, Joe was always able to get top musicians to play on this albums.

I married young 18 and my wife wanted to go to a local carnival in our community in Florida. We both were absolutely stunned as we were walking by those carnival booths and noticed a full band was set up in a small empty area standing on nothing more than sheets of plywood for the stage. All of a sudden Joe Cocker comes out of nowhere, and starts belting out this song. Had no idea Joe Cocker was throwing a FREE concert, but there he stood right in front of us at eye level at a local carnival. I'll never forget it as long as I live. They kicked butt too.

Thanks for that link. I went back and watched it - so awesome. SNL was my favorite show for years - too bad they're now a part of the woke agenda.

@@violetflame23 I don't see "woke" as a bad thing, so I enjoy SNL just as much now as I did in the '70s.

Joe Cocker was so much fun to watch... John Belushi did a spot on impression of him!! John and Joe sang a song together on SNL back in the day...and John’s imitation was more like Joe than Joe himself!!❤️🎶

You need to just take the leap and watch the movie Mad Dogs and Englishmen with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell and many of the band members that recorded Layla and All Things Must Pass. You can see Joe's songs on TH-cam with the Mad Dogs and they are all exceptional!

This is one worth listening to (one of the several) live version. To watch him perform adds another 50%!

I saw Joe Cocker perform this song in concert in 1969. I knew the song but I didn't know who Joe Cocker was at the time. He was a new artist. Nevertheless, he blew my mind.

Joe Cocker mostly covered other peoples songs , but always made them his own with his instantly recognizable voice and style. He was friends with and covered quite a few Beatles songs.

Dave Mason wrote this song and it was first recorded by the band Traffic... he's someone you need to hear as well. Joe does a great job with it! His best from this era is his cover of the Beatles "With a Little Help from My Friends".... he uniquely makes it his own!

If you want a great sampling of Joe Cocker, check out the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" double album and the film of that tour. One of the very best of the rock and roll concert films.
