I think so too! I went to 4 concerts on this tour, the Green tour. I seen them 2 times before in 1984. But these concerts were epic. Most concerts have a lull in the middle of the show. Not these shows, intense from start to finish. I lost my voice, I know the songs by heart! LOL!❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@Gonzax Bill Berry, Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Michael Stipe were the only members of REM. They toured with other musicians: Peter Holsapple in the early years, Scott McCaughey and Ken Stringfellow in the later ones, but they played this show with just the four original members.
@@petecampbell6117 I know REM were 4 original members then 3 after Bill left; what I meant is that though they were certainly amazing as a four-piece, that is not the case here, there's five people playing on this particular show. You're wrong when you say it was just the 4 original members, the fifth one is very low on the mix and you can barely see him but if you pay attention, he's certainly there playing keyboards and piano.
@@petecampbell6117 No worries. He's hard to see but he was the fifth member playing keyboards and guitar on that tour, maybe not for the whole tour, I don't know, and I can't really tell whether it's him or not here as it is too dark but I assume it's probably him. If you watch the last song, "it's the end of the world..." you can spot him playing acoustic guitar at ~18:13; it's just a second but you can see him next to Stipe, to his left. What an incredible live band they were!
God I needed this today. Thank you soooo much for posting this flashback from a better past when music was real. These guys were magical together, and you know they loved each other just as much as they loved playing music together. I still haven't gotten over them deciding to hang it up, but they were there for me when I needed them (middle school and high school) and then they were gone (I was born in '77) so I didn't get to enjoy the Document tour, only saw them once in Chicago, but thank God I did get that one time. At least they'll live forever on TH-cam and in my soul.
I was born in 76, In Georgia.. we moved away when I was young but I always felt a connection to this band. Like you, I only saw them once as well but they still mean the world to me

He was great but sadly had a brain aneurysm that forced him to quit the band eventually. I guess he was exerting himself too much. But you’re right! I was very impressed with his drumming and energy level. Also, with Peter Bucks constantly playing appregios. How he does it is beyond me. You’d think his hand would fall off. Great band!
On It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) it sounds like Stipey he was giving a speech like was on a timer. He crammed so many lyrics into each verse that Mike Mills had to count himself in so he could start playing at the right time.

@@pat7989 For them to get back together, it would only be to commemorate the end of the world as we know it. And . . . Bill is FINE, and has been enjoying the bucolic life since retiring a quarter century ago. The band showed its integrity for carrying on as long as it did until there was no good reason to continue, wrapping things up 10 years ago this fall. It was a group decision; they never continued without Stipe. There are few things as disheartening as a band needlessly playing on into their 60s and 70s when they've said and done everything there is to say and do. Unless, of course, you're Spinal Tap. THAT was a worthy comeback. 😀
Right.... He started to go off the rails at this point, and after loving all their early stuff up to the Green album, I followed them less and less.... When Berry left it was game over for me.
I was there.. MAN was I blown away by the power of this band's performance. First time R.E.M. live and one of my favourite bands ever since.
No doubt, that 89 tour was something special. Just tune after tune of great ones......

When 5-2-85 is your birthdate. You would be 4 years old in '89. Looking at your picture, you couldn't possibly have attended this.

I feel like the drummer from Pylon influenced him. Both of them were total beasts on the drums.

Bill Berry is a great drummer, doesn't get spoken enough about. Same with Clem Burke of Blondie.
