Replacing The Square Worn Out Tires On The 1939 Ford Coupe

- During our first test drive of the 1939 Ford Coupe we realized the tires were square from sitting and needed to be replaced. We also never looked the car over before taking it on a drive. Thankfully we survived with no issues but its time to put the 39 on the lift to take a closer look at the underside, and install some fresh tires. There may also be some lowering involved

Makes our family very happy seeing the ol girl ride again. Appreci8 your work and dedication fellas. We will show cousin Bobby the video. NJoy!!!!
It’s our pleasure! We love bringing these old Fords back to their former glory!
Just as you said " A little bit of attitude but retaining the elegance" this is a beautiful coupe!
I’m 81 and I remember drawing those cars when I was in grade school. I should’ve been studying and doing school work but I liked drawing cars from the 30’s and 40’s better 🤪
This is excellent winter content.. Killer adjustment that keeps the ride looking pretty normal
Great work guys- now the exhaust please😊
The tire size and the front drop are perfect! An excellent channel, keep up the great work!👍👍
Thanks! 👍
so here’s a question what year was the first year ford did split windows? what was the last?
I love what you guys do with the old cars you all have good taste in everything you do I would like to thank you for giving these cars new life
New tires size are perfect, awesome result! Greetings from Brazil!
As a muscle car fan from the 70s I approve of the rake!
Love the 39 Coupe. Please post more video about this car. Thanks for the 41 Ford shackle tip!
Stance is absolutely perfect! Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!
The stance is perfecto! It really looks good! I just love this '39 and the progress it is seeing! Thanks guys!
Glad you like it!
Very nice results. I like the simplicity of the grill better than the 40, and the business coupe is a favorite too. Great lines and original paint!
The stance looks great...This little rig is definitely a keeper, at least for a good while....
Good choices on tires and schackle adjustments. The brake job will be neat to see too. The exhaust replacement with 1-1/2 or 2 inch and glass packs will really make it a moonshiner 😊 gotta have chrome tips too. Interesting though will be where or what is the cause of the anti freeze leak. Really enjoying this 39 and 38 work you're doing.
yup, as you said, it now looks and sits great, one thing I'd do if I were working on it, would be to power wash the underside, and give it a coat of your rust encapsulator paint, to keep all that original sheet metal etc. in good condition for years to come. Thoroughly enjoy watching your vids, keep up the great work in saving all these wonderful old cars, only wished I lived on your side of the pond and could work on my own project 👍
That’s the plan but need to wait for it to be warm out. Can’t be power washing inside the garage
Somethings wrong, Steve is driving a car and not Matt!
It was Steve's Christmas bonus! Hehehe
Good answer@@wayneforbes7671
Water pipe, 🎶🎶 Home grown's just alright with Me 🎶🎶. Sometimes.
Looks absolutely fantastic with the staggered tires and rake.
And you know Steve you can get a thousand attaboys by rebuilding over a 100 carbs, rewire all the cars like a genius, get stuck engines running that haven’t been started since before the millennium but you back the car out of the garage one time and get mud on the tires and it’s Dammit Steve and welp there goes all your Attaboys .😆
Thank you Matt and Steve for the update on the '39 ! It's looking awesome and stance is perfect !
Great job...great improvement ❤
Perfect stance, looks killer!
Love the stance of this 39. Hat's off it looks OEM++.
=)
Really nice coupe! Since I was a little guy some 60+ years ago I have always thought the '39/'40 Fords were just right. The '39 is going to turn out great with the improvements you mentioned. Nice car.
Looks excellent - cant wait to see it once the paint has been buffed
Very nicely done. Doc Brown's going to be ready for his date in the 1800's.
with the 'Spruce Goose' wiring up top and PT-109 plumbing underneath ~ I dub this car the Howard Hughes '39 ps - the ride height looks very legit Postwar LA Sepulveda Blvd.- perfect as is
Stance is PERFECT.
Those trim rings & caps really set it off...
The tires and front drop look good! Nice!
Love the right height great looking car wish. I had it in my garage. Keep up the good work
Oh man that last shot was gold
Can't wait to see ol' Doc Brown shine....
I really love the body style on this car , nice lines , & very solid . I got a good enough look at it with all 4 original style tires on it , so seeing the actual change to what you went to was POW ! The ass-end totally changed up perfectly , with tire up in the fender , & a Fatter look . The front was same as before , & the car was level . Just changing the shackles , & Bam ! Front end dropped just enough to match the back-end's tire tuck into the fender , & still have full turn radius . That car sets like a drag car , without anything else . New brake system , & fuel line , exhaust . I take it from what Steve said , there is a cross-over pipe up by the engine , typically ? Find & fix that coolant leak , hopefully it's something like an old rubber hose leaking . The previous owner did like to "patch" things . That banjo rear looks like it's leaking good too . Otherwise , it's turned out to be one of the best cars I've seen you get to work with . Just some little things , with the usual refresher parts . Nothing drastic , & I really don't want to jinx ya guys , so I'll shut-up there . Very nice car , sets perfectly now with new shoes , IMHO .
Thank you! Yes the car would have had a crossover and single exhaust from original.
@@IronTrapGarageOk . They do breathe a whole lot better with a dual exhaust . That's my experience with V8's . Thank you for answering that question . Awesome !
Love the look! Those two cars pair well together. Thanks for the awesome content and inspiration! 🤘🤘🤘
OMG , I just about fell over laughing when I saw that exhaust. It reminded me of something my Dad would have done. He lived through the Depression and used to fix his cars just like this. The guy who did this probably had a bunch of these fittings laying around in his garage and figured this out. Just like my Dad. Thanks
Matt and Steve. Brought back happy times.
100% correct! This gentleman was working with what he had! We can’t hate on his ability to make the stuff work! We’ll make it a little better with some time and a little exhaust tubing.
Great look to the car with the tires and adjustments. Love it.
The tire sizes look great Matt. That 39 looks awesome!
Have you ever thought about insuring Steve? So he can take one of those cars home and cruise his family around and his friends some weekand we can't. He's one guy that I would so trust
Right On!
Now that’s a car. Great job Matt
I'm liking the new tires and the way you got her dropped. A good wash & buff and she'll look down right saa-weeet!
Woo-Hoo! Nice job guys, Nice Job!❤
✌️😃👍
Thanks 👍
My concern would be suspension travel when hitting a bump in turns. Easy enough to readjust or radius the fenders if needed.
That's starter coolant! It's like blinker fluid. Have to change it every 60 years! Love your videos! LOL
Stance is great. That's one sweet coupe. Man, you picked a good word to describe the old dudes work... Kooky. 🤣
Haha yep!
Love this car,one of my favorite early Fords. It has more character than the 40.
Agreed!
About time Steve's gets to drive a non rusted iron trap car...looking good👍
Non rusted? He’s driven loads of them that aren’t “rusty”.
Hi guy i setting here in southeast missouri with a -1 temp by the wood fire with coffee in hand and watching my favorite guys work on Dr Browns moonshine car👍🏻
Stay warm thanks for watching!
Looks great! The threaded water pipe exhaust is a trip. Looking forward to more on this ride.
Love the stance on the coupe!
All the used car's I've bought that's the first thing I've done to them was the breaks on all 4 corners got redone. My Pop's and older brother are mechanic. My late Pop's would tell me you have to be able to stop before you can go! So I always took that model to save me a whole lotta money and courts in the long run. As far as tires I always put new shoes on my vehicles because I drive my vehicles everyday.
I have bought used tires knowing I was going to change them out after body work and mechanical work was done.
Yep, just took me back to when I was a kid and fell in love with 37-42 fords. That was the look!✊
Stunning Condition like my 31 Roadster!
Great survivor from 1939. Looking forward to more work on this ole coupe.
Love the 39 but I am CRAZY about that ATLANTIC gas sign on the wall! Right call on the tire sizes! PERFECT rake!
Thanks we have to agree!
You all make these old cars whole again. They look great.
Great looking car. It's sitting just right.
Love those tear-drop taillights too… I had to zoom the image to make sure they hadn’t been mutilated with that Kustom Kliche^ , the dreaded blue dots!
Turns out you have great taste & I’m now a subscriber.
Matt, the slight rake is perfect, you nailed it!! The dee-luxe accessory Merc trim rings look really nice with the hub caps. That flattie sounds right even with that weirdly cobbled exhaust. Can't wait to see what you do with all that, and brake work, fuel line...what a supercool Winter project!
The finest coupe in the 39 series, it's the perfect size for it. Matt.
Dad bought a '51 Ford coupe at auction. Dual exhausts and blue dot tail lights. I was about six and thought that car was great. When the exhaust rusted out, he went to a stock system, which broke my heart. When a tail light broke, he couldn't get blue dots for replacements.
The 39 looks just about perfect. Upgrade the dual exhaust, but keep it!
Having grown up with black and white TV and photography, another grey car does nothing at all for me... Black, white, and grey were all you could see back then. Give me color!
Dad worked for a supplier of industrial rubber and plastics. I worked there part time when I was old enough. They sold shredded asbestos by the scoop from an open barrel on the store floor. Would love to see the health histories of all the people who worked there in their later years. Dad died with no lung cancer, but not sure about anyone else.
Truly a gem, tasteful improvements are well done. Thanks for not modifying the body!
I love the mandrel bends under asb tile.
The new tires and rake look killer!
Damn that car is sooooo good! Love the Stance!
Pure-ism is all in the eye of the beholder and your pure changes are hot rodding Sweeeeeeet!!❤❤
1971 my brother purchased one it was beautiful Oldsmobile rocket 88 three deuces on top of that and a b&m behind it and glasspack muffler , it was awesome. He went to veatnam came back mom sold it.
39 looks cool !
Love it! Did very similar on my ‘41 Plymouth coupe Shine Runner. I went with 6.00-16s up front and 6.50-16 truck tires in the back for the rubber rake. Made custom drop blocks for the rear and used dropped uprights for the front. With some original ‘41 Plymouth hubcaps and ‘40 Dodge trim rings to finish it off. It would look right at home parked next to that ‘39 ford, or on a back dirt road in the Appalachian mountains!
Looks great! I hope you are also going to replace the duel exhaust!
That's the plan!
The 37 lights definitely look better than the originals . The original paint on this car is just amazing a real survivor. Great show looking forward to seeing what happens with the Lincoln convertible.
Man, I have never seen pipe fittings used for exhaust…lol, that’s incredible!!
Haha that’s a new one for us too!
Great Stuff guys .Regards,Matt.
Awesome rake guys! Looks great.
Looks great!
Very subtle and cool as heck!
You guys did a great job.keep up the good work .looking forward to more.
You nailed the stance! Nice job.
looks rad, loving all the content lately!
Looks perfect
Stance looks spot on for it! Be a great cruiser around town.
Lookin' good Matt! Always liked that stance on those cars.
Looks 100% better with the different sized tyres front & back good job guys. Looking forward to the next video 📹. Tim.
Thanks 👍
PERFECT
Perfect !!
Looking sweet, great stance,old school!
Looks good!
moonshiners almost always ran truck tires in the back.. with an extra spring or two.. so when the car was loaded with hooch it wouldn't squat and be a dead give away they were on a run
I like it! Looks awesome!
Looks great. I had similar chrome rings on my 46 Dodge.
It sits just right! 👍
Matt - what can I say about the stance of the car other than AWESOME!!!! The exhaust will make a great piece of wall art in the shop because I’ve never seen anything like that before.
I totally agree!
She’s looking good Matt!!!
Looks Marvelous
Looks great
great video. love the forever exhaust pipes
Looks very cool
Perfect stance.
Looks perfect !!!...
Love it, my 41 had a new spring in the front that gave it a gasser look.
Perfect stance, car looks amazing
Looks much better
Love the tire combo
Quit worrying about the purests so much and keep doing what you do so well. They are the ones who are watching a classic hot rod channel. There are plenty of restoration channels for them to watch and comment on. Just keep jamming on
I’m not worried about them we’re just making mention of them because they shout the loudest in the comments.. all tongue in cheek.
