2017 Lexus ES350 UNBOXING Review - BMW Doesn't Want You To Drive This Car

  • Today's unboxing review is all about the 2017 Lexus ES350, a luxury sedan that's not meant for driving enthusiasts. Simply put, the ES350 isn't a very exciting car to drive but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque and paired to a six-speed automatic, the ES350 is really nothing more than a restyled Toyota Avalon. Hey, it used to be based on the Toyota Camry, so the Avalon is a nice upgrade. Lexus has applied its latest styling language to create a full-size luxury sedan that, at least at first glance, looks fun to drive.
    Step inside and you'll be treated to a slick interior with outstanding fit and finish. It's a Lexus, after all. With a huge rear seat and front-wheel-drive, the ES350 delivers decent fuel economy (21/31 mpg city/highway) and an extremely comfortable ride. But here's the big question: is it worth paying a few thousand dollars more for the Lexus ES350 over the Toyota Avalon, which shares not only a platform but also the same engine and transmission. We discuss that and more in the review. Enjoy!

    I had two BMWs prior to this and yes they drive nice, but I was done paying $150 for oil changes, $400 for battery and programming, and many thousand dollars in repairs right after the warranty expires. . If I spend a lot of money for a luxury car I expect it to last and be trouble free for the most part other than typical maintenance. I chose es350 and love it.

      This is so spot on. Luxury to me means you pay a high price for high quality that lasts decades to come. With BMW or any german car you pay a crazy high price and then you get plastic engine components that break and cost a fortune and don't last anywhere near 200k miles, that's not luxury that's garbage. The only way I would get into a german car is via leasing, that way all I pay for is gas.

    I have a 2016 ES350 with 42k miles. Most reliable car I’ve ever owned. It’s beautiful and comfortable. A person who drives a Lexus wants a car they don’t have to worry about.

    this is a much better deal than any german car for these reasons alone. 20 yr track record for being reliable and safe with excellent resale value; you can find a ton of es models with over 250k on them past 10yrs old still running fairly well and not rusted. they are cheaper and have a better fit finish ride and tech. they look nice are good on gas have adequate size are nimble and have full size spare. you can have a well equipped 2008 model and would need a very exspensive 2013 or new german car to have those same features. such as pano roof, air in seats. full size spare with kit, rotating headlights,rain sensing wipers etc. it would cost small fortune lol german 55 to 77k new, used 37k to 65k. lexus 44k to55k new, used 15k to 35k. buying a german car makes no sense now. they just dont measure up for the money and pourpose they are selling a myth.. not one of you people are driving more than 120 on a consitent basis so that speed bs is null and void. its just a phony status symbol of old but actual owners facts make lexus a much better case. also lexus is a great car to drive in every way. luxury,technology.safety,power,good looks and fun. my hiusband myself and our family roll in all of ours. ask any real lexus owner and they will tell you no disrespect but i dont want german. i bet not one of you will out class or out ride us on any american highway in any german car. even the sound system is excellent cmon people. caddy is now much better also

      I think where the German models excel is the performance aspect. This may have a peppy V6... but compared to a BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, Audi A6, etc, the krauts will have significantly better chassis, balance, performance, quattro options, xdrive options, turbocharged options, hell even supercharged 6 cylinder options. So I wouldn't toss the baby out with the bathwater and completely dismiss German cars. I love them and admire them... but you have to pay to play. Incredibly expensive repairs, service and terrible resale value. They are 100% a rich mans game. I much prefer Toyota/Lexus as its just a better jack of all trades vehicle, better value if you can live without the high performance stuff. = )

      I just test drove a lexus. If you don't care about performance or the drive the lexus is a great choice and definitely a money saver. But when it comes to performance and handling it doesn't compare to its German counterparts

    I don't quite agree with u when u say the previous generation ES is just nothing more than a Camry with the Lexus badge. I own the 2010 ES 350 and i have driven several Camry's even the 2014 and the Totoya Avalon. I'm sorry the attention to details on the previous ES beats the Camry and Avalon. Even looking at this new generation there's still a lot of similarities with the previous generation. Exterior design it virtually the same but with a new grill, headlights, fog lights and tail lights. The interior is similar as well with quality luxury finishing but with more tech available on this model like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, steering assist, which weren't offered on the previous generation. There's a reason why the ES is the highest selling Lexus, cause it's a perfect blend of luxury and comfort at that price range compared with the competition. Then obviously it's the most reliable car in its class and even more reliable than all the German competitors by a mile with good resale value all positives that make it a best seller.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We never said the ES350, of any generation, is a bad car. Nor did we say the attention to detail, Lexus style, is bad either. But the fact remains: the ES is still a fancier and more expensive Toyota Camry and now Avalon.

      Yoshiaki K. I really don't understand how any one who has driven a camry or avalon will say the Es is just a fancier and more expensive camry or avalon. I guess they should say the same for the Mercedes maybach and the s550/600 s class.

    • @yoshiakik.5332
      @yoshiakik.5332 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They love saying these type of things, especially when it involves different market segments particularly if one car being more expensive. It's probably a jealousy thing of the luxury brands. As few people can afford a brand new luxury car. I agree with you, there is no way you can sit in even an Avalon and then sit in an ES and say it's anything close to being the same. As well as how they drive, Toyota will put much more refinement on their premium luxury brand, even if the car sits on the same platform.

  • @Jacob-xd3ko

    The styling on the Lexus looks much better than the Avalon. The seats, steering wheel, and infotainment center look better. Not to mention, I don't think the Avalon has all of the safety features that the Lexus does. I just checked the top model Avalon and I don't see front or rear proximity sensors.

    Well done comprehensive review. I think the real world acceleration is under 7 seconds in "Sport Mode." Many people on the internet still think that the 6th Gen ES is based on the Camry platform and not the Avalon. Nice job explaining this and all the other features. Essentially this vehicle brings the modern world a taste of the luxo ride that was offered in great American luxo cruisers of the late 60's up to around the mid 70's. We're talkin the Cadillac and Buick land yachts, where road noise and harshness were not desirable ride characteristics.

Definitely a beautiful car (just bought one), but the Buick LaCrosse certainly gives it a run for the money - in the end the legendary Lexus reliability swayed my choice - although the recent ratings on Buick reliability have improved. By the way I had a 2014 Avalon from new, there are many similarities between the two the Lexus is more comfortable, quieter and smoother.

After you drive a Lexus for that amount of time... it is kind of hard to find other brands that can match the level of quality of these vehicles. The car has a lot of power and acceleration, it provided you with a safety feeling that few other brands can provide. The only problem I have with thos car is the gas consumption. It males like 15.4 m/gallon in city, of course it depends on how you drive. She likes premium gas and she likes it a loooot. I would recommend this car 100%. Is the safest and most comfortable machine out there for the price. Residual value in this car is also amazing!

    For the 2017MY, Lexus made the safety tech like radar cruise control, pre-collision, pedestrian detection, and lane keep assist, standard. Weird that blind spot warning is still optional though. Also, have you felt the fake leather in Lexus...most people can't even tell it's man made leather. Lastly, complaining that Lexus doesn't give you enough? Look at the Germans! They charge you a lot for everything and are the worst at making anything standard.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Lexus started taking a page out of the Germans' play book here. Business is business. But still, I do believe a Lexus offers better overall value (not to mention lower ownership costs) than any of its German rivals.

I have a Mark Levinson edition in my current GS, and I definitely want it to be in my new car purchase. It's actually a deal breaker for me if it doesn't have one. I'm pretty certain that I'm going to get an ES, not sure that I'll get a 2017, but maybe a 15 or 16. I don't really like these new wheels on the 2017.

    Leather no longer means luxury. It is bad for the environment and generates a lot of CO2 during production. Most people cannot tell NuLuxe from real leather. I have a CT and everyone cannot believe it is essentially a vinyl like product because it is so supple. Leather just doesn't make sense because there are better alternative that require NO maintenance, unlike leather which will crack overtime and requires conditioning and is much more photosensitive. I have never preferred leather because there are so many drawbacks…

    You said "Lincoln XTS"; I think you meant Cadillac. The XTS is arguably one market above the ES, being in the mid 40s to start and easily shoots up from there, up to ~70 grand. XTS is more of an LS competitor because of size - and now the CT6 also is an LS competitor. Don't get stuck on the rear wheel vs front wheel drive meme. These big companies go after each other on size, fit and finish, and price also. Perhaps the ATS or CTS is more of a competitor based on size, then again, they're not. Cadillac doesn't have a direct comparison to the ES, IMO.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, my mistake. Thanks for pointing that out. Car makes and models all start sounding the same after a while. Honestly, no. The (Cadillac) XTS is not a Lexus LS competitor. The CT6 is. The ATS is too small (and too different overall) to compete with the ES. The CTS? Maybe, and that's a big maybe.

    • @yoshiakik.5332
      @yoshiakik.5332 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know man, the XTS still holds its own and is one of the most distinctive cars on the road, it ushered in many firsts for Cadillac when it was introduced. It's aged well, and the interior blows away the 90s-esque LS interior IMO (I've been in both, plenty of times). Also, the XTS optioned out at ~73k, with 400 horses, that awesome Bose studio sound system (small tweeters built into your seat shoulder), the digital displays, ambient lighting, illuminated car handles etc, plenty of luxury.. Also it looks just darn cool and best at dusk or night time, especially walking toward it with the handles lit and the front super bright vertical LED's blinding everyone and classy as heck, I think it is an LS competitor, IMO. Every time I see a waxed XTS I picture Sade's No Ordinary Love, instrumental version playing in my head. So, I don't see why not as an LS compeitior. The CT6 is just icing on the cake. Also, thanks for the reply.

    Generally, car reviewers get frustrated when they review non sporty cars and always try to belittle the car, as in this case. This car is popular despite the negatives he keeps repeating. This car has an exemplary reputation and holds its resale value better than most other cars. This fact is seldom mentioned, just like reliability and dependability. Consumer Reports gives a much better comparison of brands without the bias of reviewers like this.Who really cares what an individual reviewer like this says. What are his credentials to review cars that he doesn't like because they are not sporty enough for him?

    I find it laughable to hear people say that the Lexus ES is based on the Avalon platform. It’s the other way around. The Avalon does not exist in the Japan/Asian market. Ask a European if they’ve heard about the Toyota Avalon and they’ll probably just scratch their heads.. but ask them about the Lexus ES, and they’d tell you a lot of good things about it. The Avalon was a copy cat of the ES. Meant to target the American market alone. The Lexus ES has more under its sleeve than the Avalon can offer.

    That interior is sad. Full of cheap looking Toyota bits. You can't be serious comparing this thing to a Mercedes or BMW. This car is cheaper because it is made cheaper. A GS would be more an E Class or 5 Series competitor not this rebadged Avalon. There is a reason why Lexus does not do well at all elsewhere in the world. And lol at calling that interior high quality. Lexus has pulled a fast one on you Americans hey. Well it is "Luxury" EXport to the US I suppose and I think the rest of the world gets luxury more than yall so calling it luxury with that horrendous interior...I don't know.
    Bwahaha....I couldn't stop laughing when you said the reason for the amazing German interiors is because of Lexus. I don't think they even consider Lexus a serious competitor just like the rest of the world. And sorry those 90s digital watch graphics for the climate control. No no no come on you just can't be serious. Hehehe. I am having a good old laugh here. You just said a whole load of rubbish really, have you checked the numbers for global sales? Go check how successful this car is in the middle east plus a host of other Lexus models. Some of the rubbish that come out from some people who live in Europe or so and think everything revolves around them. Is it the Audi A4 or Bmw 3 series? apart from the C class there's no German car in this price range that has a better interior than this car. I have been in all of them, i have driven several of these cars and i talk from experience. I bet you haven't even driven a modern Lexus before. The ride quality and comfort of the seats in this Es and other Lexus's beats what's in the German rivals for sheer comfort. The drive in this car is smoother than the E class and C class, test these things before coming here to write so much rubbish from a European perspective where all the laws protect all European car manufacturers ahead of other rivals. Most of all the Bmw's Audi's and all you find on European roads are leased if you didn't even know despite the laws favouring them heavily. Lexus is over priced in most European countries so of course it'll be a tall order for them to beat the European manufacturers in their continent. Go check the numbers in Asia as well and you'll see a very competitive market. Lexus only struggles against the Europeans in Europe alone. In Africa where i reside Lexus out sells the nearest European rival 2 to 1. There are barely any new Audi's, Bmw's here. There are quite a few Mercedes Benz but no where close to what Lexus shifts brand new or used vehicles. I have been to several countries and i say these things from what i have seen and also what i have researched. I love Mercedes and Bmw from the Germans, love Range Rover and Jaguar but i won't make such ludicrous comments as you did cause it makes one sound like a novice. The Lx570 where i reside is the 2nd highest selling luxury Suv in that 100k price point very close to the Range Rover. Nobody buys Audi SUV's and there are very few BMW and Mercedes Suv's here. How about the Lexus Rx 350 the highest selling luxury crossover SUV terms of sales globally. Do some research and avoid these kind of comments.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have driven the new Lexus and while they are smooth and comfortable, they are not as smooth and comfortable as the best from the German manufacturers. Their engines and gearboxes leave a lot to be desired and they never perform as well as the German competition. Lexus interiors are the worst part for me. If they want to claim they are a luxury car maker then they should at least make an effort to use bespoke switchgear instead of the ugly cheap looking Toyota bits. Where you are they might sell more but overall Lexus isn't close to selling as many cars as the Germans. I'm sorry but Lexus needs to step it up.

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SDav21 You just said different from what the entire industry knows excluding you. You may have a gripe with their interiors as you claim but from all the German manufacturers only the new S class and E class beats What's currently in the new Gs 450h presidential line and it isn't a great gap. I come from a family that owned the previous s class, have driven several Mercedes Benz cars, bmw as well. I can tell you for certain no Mercedes-Benz or Bmw drives as smooth or as comfortable as a Lexus. The newer Mercedes-Benz cars are very close but still not as smooth as the latest Lexus's. I have loved Mercedes-Benz all my life and I won't just hop on some band wagon stuff from Europe. Why are you comparing Lexus with all the German manufacturers, compare them individually. Last year Mercedes-Benz beat Lexus marginally in overall sales in North America cause they dropped the new models on time which went on sale. Do u know that was the first time Mercedes-Benz benz since the 2000's was the highest selling luxury brand in North America? The year before Lexus was no 1, and with the new models released mid/end of last year like the new topping Rx model u should expect another top performance from Lexus this year. The same goes in the middle east, compare them individually, don't compare one brand against 3 or 4 brands. The only continent were Lexus doesn't compete is in Europe. Have you seen the new Ls 500? If u have and can't appreciate how drastic Lexus has changed it just means you are biased and there's no point debating further. Top speed recently did a comparison review of all the new flagships and the Lexus beat the s class, 7 series and A8 with interior design. The new Ls has a fabulous incredibly crafted modern interior. Look at the floating arm rest design and two colour tone leather design with wood in the middle all laid out vertically instead of in the usual horizontal way as most European cars and other manufacturers. Watch as many other manufacturers take a cue from Lexus with this interior design and people will later hail Mercedes-Benz and others for doing what Lexus did well before.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samson Okoro It's not just about sales in North America or middle East. Individually, each German manufacturer sells way more cars than Lexus WORLDWIDE. And no the new LS has stolen many interior design cues from the S Class and the interior of the new LS looks like a mish mash of various design ideas. It is not appealing especially the cluster behind the steering wheel which is fine in an LC500 for example but not in a large luxury car.

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SDav21 that's a lie, pls bring the statistic to back it up, I have seen global stats and Europe is where the Germans dominate alone. You forget that the North American market is far bigger than Europe hope u know that? U forget that the Asian market is bigger than Europe? Go check the figures in Asia. Why do you think Toyota is so rich and so big and only VW of recent comes close? And VW is only close cause of the cheaper cars they sell amongst several other businesses they run and own. Lexus sells more against each German rival in Africa, sells more in North America and more in the middle East. I don't have the statistics for Asia as a whole but I have seen the Japanese stats and Lexus dominates there as well for luxury brands. Stop this crap talk about each German manufacturer selling more than Lexus globally. Europe will never be global

      Michael Nguyen if decide to keep the beamers, you're going to visit the dealer/shop quite often. I'm sure you're already aware of that.

      Facelift. I had a 2104 which was identical except for the front grill.
