- Here's how to fix an ABS Brake Light Fault on a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. The problem is most likely the ABS speed sensor. You can buy the exact part I used to fix my truck from the amazon affiliate link below. Make sure to double check that it fits your vehicle by using the amazon fit check feature. Thank you Elliot, I followed your youtube instructions and replaced my speed sensor. It corrected my problem on my 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins diesel of ABS, Brake light fault and also no speedometer readings. It took less than 1 hour after buying the sensor. Thanks again!!
Thanks man it just happened to me at 70 mph needless to say I was panicking but nothing serious was failing oil pressure, battery, ECT looked at 10 to 15 and then you hit exactly what was up thanks again you have saved me so much time that something don't have much of.
You are correct, mine is a 2004 v6 3.7 with manual transmission. I upgraded my diff to a ls diff and now my abs light and brake light are both on, after doing some research I came to find out that I have to reprogram my computer to set my new pinion and tire size. Before throwing parts at your vehicle, make sure ALL your fuses are in the fuse box EVEN SPARES. I had ABS, Check Engine, and Brake warning lights on, and couldn't fix it for 2 years. I replaced ABS sensor, flushed differential oil, replaced EGR valve etc. I read someone say that a fuse could be the culprit. I popped a fuse into the empty "Spare" fuse slot, and suddenly the lights went away! I wasn't able to smog and register my truck for 2 years because of a fuse! I was happy and mad at the same time when the lights disappeared.
What fuse did you use? Seems like the same thing that is wrong with my truck.

I took a screenshot of the sensor label from your video and went to Advance. You're right. The part was $29.99 at advance and $14.99 on Amazon. Wanted it today so I could take advantage of the inspiration that hit. Followed instructions exactly and boom, ABS light off, BRAKE light off, my odometer is now reading at low miles and get this- I realized that my brake pedal even feels different (better). Like a brake pedal is supposed to feel.

We are going to try to do this soon too. Have had the speedometer stop working then start again, but... the last time it stopped, it hasn't started again. So... we are going to replace ours soon. THANK YOU! symptoms... break light on, ABS light on, speedometer does not function. Replaced the sensor (18$ autozone). Working now. 1/2" deep socket and 15 minutes under the truck. Thank you sir for the video! Happy Goat owner again (wont last long) Ha

I think this is what my problem is! My code checker said I had a bad speed sensor so I replaced both of them on the transmission and still get the code WITH all the same things on the dash that you mentioned. Didn't occur to me about the one on the rear axle! 😵
My truck is a 04 ram 1500 so I think it will be similar. DANG, why didn't I check TH-cam before now!

I would double check it's the same sensor for your truck. Amazon has a thing to check if it fits. I just don't know if our trucks use the exact same part. Anyway, hope it fixed it. Best of luck.

Ty I hope I can fix my husbands old Dodge. Trying to sell it & this has been exact problem his truck has entire time he drove it. He has early onset dementia so just used an app but now can no longer drive much less fix anything. Will post if it works!!

@@ElliottHinds thank you I really appreciate the info you gave me I seem to have got it fixed. I plug my bully dog tuner up on the truck and reprogrammed it in the tire size setting. I drove it for about two hours it shift better got better gas mileage and it also did not throw any more codes.

I replaced the wheel bearings on the front of my 2009 Ram, and that took care of the ABS/Traction control lights

James Shupe you're welcome. I'm not sure about the check engine light. But if the abs/brake light are also still on, then I would check the wiring to the abs sensor. That could be the problem.

I have a 1996 Ram 4x4 5.9 liter. Had transmission rebuilt and when I got it back my speedometer cruise control and overdrive stopped working. So on a 1995 which speed sensor runs the speedometer? The one in the rear end or the one in the transfer case? Or could I have a different problem since overdrive doesn't work. The transmission shop messed something up and will not fix my truck. Took it back twice and last time they unhooked the my abs speed sensor on the rear end. Shop is called The Tranny Shop in Gretna Nebraska.

So I some what have the same problem I think? The abs light and break light will some on, but only after I hit a certain speed, but my speedo still works fine. Could it be in the process of going out or be something diffrent.
Did you have control module runnin all the time symptoms also or just lights on the dash.? I've replaced module and relay no change, guess I'll do the speed sensor

Thanks for the vid! I have some good u-pull it yards in my town. I went there instead of ordering new. I tried to pull 7 & got 3. Trouble I had was harness wouldn't come off 1, both screws turned together on 2 (can get them out, just a lil more difficult). The biggest problem is the sensor wouldn't come out. They would spin, but not come up. Forcing one with a crowbar broke it, and the bottom part stayed in the pumpkin - the sensor has a nice big magnet and copper coil inside.
I don't have any idea how to get a stuck one out - pb blaster? Luckily on my truck it came out pretty well and the first used sensor I tried took care of the issue. Oh and I don't think I was charged for them! They rang up the bigger items I had and glossed over the small stuff. Good luck all! P.s. My '99 2500 has 84k miles and it happened after pulling a full 12x6 uhaul 5 hours.
Sounds like your diff got hot. Might want to think about changing your diff fluid. Go with a synthetic you'll get a gain on fuel mileage and better lubrication

I did this. For a day it worked. Since then a check engine light has come on and won’t go away.

Now your speedo didnt work at all? And did it keep overdrive from working?
I have a 1998 without ABS. 5.9L-12V. Speedometer is working. My vehicle had a brake light come while driving but it would cycle back off, sometimes with a re-release while off and sometimes with lift of the foot (cable?) Now, for several days, my BRAKE light comes on after 5-6 miles, some time after highway speed in mild weather. I had to add some brake fluid but have no reference for how long it took to go down. I don't see any streak on the rear tires from a drum leak. ***** When I park, maybe after cooling, the brake light stay off. It has what looks like the same unit on the differential. Just happened.
QUESTIONS:
1) Is this the same problem even for non-ABS?
2) Is it the same unit as the 98 with ABS?
3) Could it be air, requiring a bleed? (Will do any way.)
4) Can worn drums cause? Tested drums for rub, seems fine.
5) Does "back up/BRAKE" adjust work on this model?
Any other advice appreciated.
I Have a 98.5 24V, Thank you soooo much for info, my ABS light and Brake light came on, speedo would only work above 15mph ish, 1st lights ever had come on since new, 125k on it now, was in middle of Yukon when it pulled this stunt, drove another 500 mile to whitehorse and Napa had one (a miracle at that) for 30.00 thanks to your utube I watched in Whitehorse was able to put this through the uprights, drove another 3k miles then it would loose speedometer from approx 55mph to zero and only Abs light would come on
when speedo dropped. Only did this like 3 time. And seems fine now, I am holding my breath now .any Ideas? Thinking Napa sensor may be culprit but not sure since it acted different then before.. Thanks for help
You're welcome Bret. I'm glad it helped. I would try scanning it with a code reader. I never had the exact problems you have now. It might be a speedometer sensor that's on the transmission or transfer case if your truck is 4x4. I would try looking into that too.

I had the abs light brake light and speedometer stopped working on my 98 dodge dakota slt v8 magnum I replaced the same exact sensor you did and BINGO!!!! Took care of it... I just dont know why the speedometer still not working...any tips??
Glad I could help! Thanks for leaving a comment. I'm not super familiar with Dakotas but on the Rams there are two sensors for the speedo. The other one comes from the transmission. So I would look into that. The other possibility I can think of would be the speedo itself is messed up. I would look into the other sensor first though.

Dave Boy I drained the fluid and beat it into pieces through my gears lol, and spent a while giving it a good cleaning after
While the warning lights were on, could you hear the abs controller running even while the key and engine were off?

Sorry if I missed it in the video, but what did you use to determine it was the sensor in the back? I have the same light showing on my truck, but my speedometer seems to work properly.
My truck only has 2-wheel abs so there is only one sensor which made it easy to diagnose. I haven't researched 4-wheel abs systems because I don't have one butI believe you could take a multimeter and check the connections of each ABS sensor if you have 4-wheel abs. Do a little research and double check, but I think the broken sensor is an open circuit fault. So you can measure the resistance from the two pin connection of each sensor using a multimeter and see which one shows infinite resistance or open circuit.
Emergency brake pedal is down when I release it pedal only comes up a little not like it was in the beginning.Brake lights on and won't go off. 2000 Dodge Durango.

My odometer didn't go out. It always worked. I haven't ever had to mess with the odometer on a second gen Dodge just my first gen Dodge which is different (mechanical). Does any part of your instrument panel work?
Both my speedometer and odometer dont work and abs and brake light is on replaced both speed sensors and still no speedometer.
Pulling mine out it snapped off what would be the best way to get the bottom half out
Have a 2003 Dakota. Changed speed sensor on rear pig (5 speed manual) Checked all elect connections, opened main fuse box as well as the one in the cab only found one bad fuse (air cond)) and checked all wiring connections including front ABS sensor connections.. Found all visual grounds to frame , took apart and cleaned. Checked codes, three bad, P0440, P0522, and Poo38. None of these seem to be affecting speedometer.,brakes or ABS. Whats the issue?
Not sure to be honest, what symptoms is your truck having? Is it exactly like my truck or a little different?
I did the same thing but the lights still on any recommendation
I unplugged the 2 plugs on the abs unit and cleaned the connectors added some dielectric goop put it back together and so far so good no lights

PO500 code is popping up. ABS and check engine light are on. Speedometer doesn’t work. I replaced this sensor and it didn’t fix the problem. Any idea what else it could be?

Hi I have a question on 2006 dodge ram 3500 cumins slt 4x4, speed auto meter won't work. Now the 4wd light come on and off and sometime 4wd engage with low speed. Took to mechanic they are ran the code and told my husband changing both battery,but won't fixed the problem. Now it even won't engage the gear and the N light come on all the time. Any ideas ? Thank you
Changing both batteries isn't a bad idea in general, especially if they are more than three years old. But that doesn't sound like it would be the cause of the problem. If you want to work on it yourself, I would get a code reader and scan it or go somewhere like Autozone and have them scan it and tell you the codes so you can google them. If you want to take it to a mechanic I would try to find one who specializes in diesel trucks. Ideally one where the mechanics also drive cummins. They will know the most and be able to sort it out the fastest. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Hi Sophie, yes my truck was throwing a code. It's not easy to diagnose a truck for a distance like this but my guess would be to look into the abs controller. Nope, they turned right off just like I showed at the end of the video. You might have another issue. For example, newer trucks also had front abs sensors.
I change both front and back sensors and it did when away but it came the light came again

The Abs speed sensor is one of the inputs for the Trans to select gears. This would be a good thing to to try. Best of luck!
@@ElliottHinds appreciate the tip. My dad owns a mopar shop and he suggests the same as well. I've had this issue (in/out lockup) since purchased over 2year ago. Im 2nd owner with 130k miles on the truck now. The local diesel truck shop has had it in there multiple times, everytime no one could fix this issue. Said they fixed it. Nope. Than they fixed a lot of other issues(replacing old worn out stock parts). Going to be very irked if this lil sensor was the master issue for $20 fix vs the $3k I've put into local shops....

@@Jameson11inkyou're welcome. Sorry to hear that. I hope this is the fix so you're done with it. Autos are a pain but a lot more fun than the slow shifting manuals. Anyway, I'm not an expert of second gen autos but I've worked on this issue with my 1st gen. The inputs I know of are this one, throttle position sensor, throttle valve cable, and rpm. It could also be an internal issue with the trans or air in the fluid from the level being too high or too low. Good luck!
I have the same issue with the brake and ABS light, plus my brake pedal goes all the way down to the floor and I already changed the power booster and the master cylinder and I also bleed the lines. what else do you think it could be?

Hi Tori, it might, but chances are you'll need to replace another sensor also. I haven't looked into it a lot because I haven't had that problem. But I think the 2nd generation Rams also had a speed sensor on the trans or maybe the transfer case if they are 4x4.
And my 98 Dodge Ram. My ABS lights are still on bright lights. On. I replace the rear axle plug, but you're pronounced stille in my work.
I ave a 98 1500 4x4 ram,,my problem is the lights come on at 60 mph,,,but brakes seem to work fine,,,prior to that,,pedal seems to go thru the floor

Sorry to hear that. I would scan it with a code reader next. I think your truck also has front abs sensors because it's newer than mine. So it could be the front.
I think the speedo might be another problem if it doesn't work at all. Mine still worked above like 20 mph.
