About 7-8 months ago I found your channel as I was researching E-Drums to see how the tech has come along & if they are close to acoustic kits yet. I researched for months & ultimately decided upon the Roland TD27KV2. It wasn't the most realistic sounding kit, but the digital Hi-Hat, Ride & Snare sold me on it. As Hi-Hats have always been difficult to simulate & the TD27KV2 seemed to have the best. But when I got the kit & set it up, I just couldn't get over how bad it sounded. It just didn't sound like an acoustic kit. Yes, I tweaked it quite a bit but still didn't like the sound. And I didn't want to have to pump it through a PC/Laptop & VST's for it to sound good. Not when spending $3500 for an E-Kit. Anyhow, I am now SO glad I returned that TD27KV2. This was exactly what I was looking for. Had I only waited a few more months I would have saved myself the hassle of setting up that TD27KV2 only to have to tear the whole thing down, repackage it all & send it back. By the way, I cannot recommend Sweetwater enough. The best customer service I've ever had. Oh, and one thing I learned is that the pads & cymbals being capable of dynamics like Ghost Notes to Rim Shots is FAR more important than having "Digital," "Positional Sensing" pads. So long as the drums can detect & differentiate between light Ghost Notes to hard Rim Shots, that is what matters most. So authentic acoustic sounds absolutely trumps those "Digital," "Positional Sensing" pads & cymbals of the TD27KV2. All the accuracy in the world doesn't help if the samples sound like dirt. This kit sounds incredible. This kit is revolutionary for E-Drums. Finally an E-Kit that gives us authentic VST quality samples as well as drum & cymbal choices from actual real drum & cymbal manufacturers. I hated the generic, lifeless sounds from the Roland TD27KV2. As well as an amazing, intuitive drum module with a 10.1 inch touch screen & a great looking, easy to use UI with every feature, setting & tweak imaginable. This is what I wanted all along, but it just wasn't here quite yet. Now, the sooner they add Blutooth audio so I can jam to music from my phone, the sooner I will be picking this up.
Roland has the obsession with not using samples and I got the same issue with a super expensive piano I bought from them recently. The piano is beautiful, key response is superb but the sound is just so fake and electronic. It has been a while so I can't return it either. Stuck with it sadly.
The assignable outs should be achieved by hard panning, So, kick into Main (hard panned left) snare into main (hard panned right) hihat to 3&4 (hard panned left) ride to 3&4 (hard panned right) toms to 6&5 (hard panned left) and crashes to 5&6 (hard panned right) You;d need to monitor it from the FOH desk though as all the panning would be horrible to listen to in headphones from the module. And some ambience to wet it up a little as it would be forced mono. But it should give what Anthony was asking for.
I have had no luck assigning instruments to the outputs without the following issues. 1. The signals from 3/4 & 5/6 bleed into the main L/R outputs. 2. Reverb, Effects, and Ambience don’t seem to be available for both the Drum Mix and the 4 assignable outputs. The manual does not explain any of this. There is nothing yet on TH-cam. I bought this kit to play live and it looks like there is no way to achieve isolating the kick, snare, Tom’s and cymbals.
Thanks so much for all you have done with your channel. As a newbie to edrums, you have possibly saved me almost a thousand by giving me direction when I was about to stray and purchase some gears that were actually not suitable for my setting. Much love from Hong Kong
this channel is gold, no unnecessary bs like other drums review channel. When I will eventually buy a drumset I'll use one of the affiliate links, definitely.
also FYI, even though I was either THE first or one of the first, I'm back to an Adopted Cousin on Patreon! Sorry it took so long to get back to this status! I'm also wearing the shirt I got from you a few years ago in my Twitch drumming stream. I appreciate everything you've done for the eDrumming community over the years, AND the interactions we've had over the years as well. Blessings, Justin!
Appreciate this! I almost pulled the trigger on the Surge. Went to my local store and got an open box Strike Pro SE for $2,050. Having a blast so far. Thanks for all the videos on helping me to decide on what kit to get!
I see a lot of mixed reviews on that, but im not ruling out getting one of those myself. Someone did recommend getting the warranty because of the cymbals.
The assignable output pairs are probably stereo busses. So you could, in fact, sending something to just one of them by panning all the way left or right. (i.e. assign kick drum to 1/2 and pan it fully left (to 1)). I haven't bought mine yet, but I'll test it out when I do.
Thanks for your brilliant video Justin! A lot of important information covered here. Careful consideration and research is needed to make a decision on this kit. Around $6K Australian is big money to outlay, your thoughts and experiences are truly appreciated. See you in the next chapter of everything Alesis!
Good stuff! Before adding a compressor, I'd try fiddling with the dynamics knob under kit editor - I found it strange that it's not under trigger settings, but I guess someone may want different dynamics for different kits.
THis video was/is awesome. I really don't care (and never have over the past almost couple decades or so?) for BFDs flat and distant sound at all. I prefer Toontrack's realism and depth etc. WISH you could put that in this module replacing the BFD. BUt at that point, you'd just buy a more compatible with more preset Pearl MIMI PRO. For my money, the Pearl Mimic Pro is still my jam. I still don't like SL much more than BFD but at least the module and software is much more powerful and compatible. Thanks Justin as always for the amazing research and vids! Also I've had both strike sets, and the module, and both sets of hats, as well as the DM10 hats too. From what I've seen and heard, These hats included with a Strata Prime seem to be the best of all.
I'll admit when I first seen the launch videos I had a few thoughts of selling my Pearl Mimic to fund this. What can I say, I get carried away with shiny new toys. On reflection I'm fairly certain that would be a big mistake.
I almost had a mimic with the atv kit, the seller changed his mind. So I went with this. In my experience thus feels real close to a real set. Then it sounds way better if your acoustic set isn't miced up. Dynamics are fantastic. I was bummed when the guy changed his mind about the mimic but now I'm thinking it happened for a reason.
I just bought 2 Strike SE’s. ABSOLUTELY LOVE BOTH ! One for church & one for me. Is it worth the upgrade?❓🤷🏽♂️ (cause I could probably sell both easily) . Thought’s ?
my dream kit is a converted Tama cocktail Jam Mini kit, one e-hat, and one e-cymbal, 2 x Syncussion SY-1s, and a sample multi pad. ( with enough trigger inputs )
Hey Justin, thanks for the answers ! As usual, you provide invaluable pre purchase insights. There is one topic I haven't seen covered anywhere is the quietness of the kit. How loud/quiet is the kit? Thank you
Thanks for the update !!! Oddly enough, right before I watched yer video, I just found the 14D digital hi-hats on ebay for $650 so I'm SUPER PSYCHED to FINALLY try them !!! I was hoping you'd do a comparison, and there it was... :-) I don't think anything beats these hi-hats from what I've researched. They're coming from Japan so I'll be at my door waiting every day now !!! Hehehehehehe Late Christmas gift for myself, because Christmas was expensive this last year, and I just got a good chunk of Change come in. Thanks for the video Justin !!! Now all I need is the digital ride and I'm done !!! Have an awesome day ! :-)
I got a prime module off of reverb to add to my A2E kit. The split cable on a Roland style ride with two connections works. I have a jobeky ride and got a splitter cable on Amazon. Also, my jobeky hi hat works. Everything works well and sounds great!
@ well, should say the Amazon ones did not work. I thought they were doing what they should but it was only a single hit that it would work… so, I ordered one from Dolby drums on reverb for like $30.
Hello Can you explain in what way the hihat is not as good as roland one. The company says the hihat is ground breaking in accuracy . Another thing is , can I use usb or Bluetooth to play drum less songs and record it with my playing Soni can here how I am doing Do you think td50k2 is better in terms of sound and triggering I love your videos ❤
Assuming I'd use the kit strictly with VSTs on my DAW, what e-kit in this price range do you think has the best quality trigger detection? Efnote 3x? Roland TD-27KV2? Alesis Strata Prime? Or are they kind of in the same ballpark?
How is the feel on these kits? I’ve always been a heavy hitter and one of the things I’ve never liked with electric kit is the ones I’ve played haven’t had a good feel to me. Concerned with having to change how I play physically and then taken things practiced on an electric kit to a standard kit.
This module is a game changer and what companies should have done at least 5 years ago. This is coming from a Roland fan. I would buy this instead a Roland in a heartbeat. Kudos to Alesis
Why is no asking if you can add another kick drum with this module? I would like to know if the module has the capability to use another kick drum to the set up, but no one has said anything as to whether or not it will allow this set up. Thanks for your great videos and keep up the great work!
I don't know if you'll have time to answer this but if you do I'd really appreciate it. A BIG question I have is if this is used as along with Superior Drummer and Easy Drummer for the awesome midi sounds you get... Do you get any double hits (example 2 sounds "triggers" for 1 hit) with the Hi hats? That's a big problem I have with the Strik Pro is no matter what I do and no matter who tries to help me from Alesis over the phone, I almost always have extra trigger hits almost 1 out of 3 times on the Hi-Hat.
Wondering if you are able to check the backing track feature and to see if it could be used to run tracks on stage. Obviously the tracks would need their own assignable output from the module. Wondering if they are able to be assigned to their own outputs some how. Possibly the headphone out only?
Anyone here heard if Alesis will be bringing out additional Strata pads for either the prime or core which have the same design specs as the main in-the-box pads?
I've been looking for the full measurement of the complete kit once built. I know that it may vary on how close you set the bars, but I'm wondering the approximate measurements just to see if it will fit my office...
If you had to choose, what would it be? ROLAND VAD507, as this has come down in price here to almost match the Alesis in the uk. I teach drums and need to upgrade my trusty very old Yamaha DTXtreme 2s. Help!
This is the vid Ive been waiting for. Thanks Justin. Yet Im still confused about hat compatibility. Love my strike pro hat setup (yea I know). You seem to say it would be compatible with this latest module. Is that true? And all other strike components also? Was hoping to get the module stand alone.down the road.
Hey man quick question. I have the Yamaha DTXpress IV And was wondering if the TD17KV series would have a better module and would sound better? The TD27 is lile 5k here in Canada lol and the TD17 is just a 2500 more or less.
I use AD2 with my Strike Pro SE and don't feel the need to downgrade to Strata. Strata is decent if you don't already own VSTs and want a easier setup straight out the box. I still prefer the acoustic look and feel of the Strike pro SE.
Did the expanded kit come with the original short crossbar plus the longer one? I can't get a straight answer from Sweetwater. I want to use the original short crossbar, and use the kit with the side snare layout instead of 3 up.
hi justin...how can i record drums while playing it on this drum kit ? can it be record inside module ? or can i record via bluetooth ? or another setup is required?
I just got the Strata Prime kit as well and can't figure out how to change the midi note that gets sent for each pad/trigger. This was simple to do on the Strike Pro, but I can't see a way to do it with this module and it's not mentioned anywhere in the manual either. Have you tried to do that? Did you figure it out?
Are the Load in Times still slow and if you have effects running are the still the last thing to load in???? ..I had so much go wrong with the Strike pro I could write a book I finally got a good module and then discovered the load in times, that was the straw that broke the camels back the strike could not be used in a live situation where back to back songs with different kits are used .....thank you for all your reviews you are the Bible of E Kits
You should must know that Alesis has some little different wiring to handle 2 & 3 zones far different from Roland and Yamaha pads or cymbals so if you change the wirings of the alternative cymbals or pads they could work naturally good i think!Do you check something like this? Thank you for much detailed video as always!!
Thank you for answering my question! I'm sad to learn that I won't be able to properly output 6 channels to FOH. That really is a deal breaker for me. We currently run an electric kit that can only do mono/stereo, and from song to song, the drummer's dynamics shift more than I'd like. - Anthony
Hi Justin! I'd be curios about If Alesis had any Plans to put out a new Drumset in the "mid priced" Range🤔 They did a new beginner Set and the Strata Prime but nothing in between as far as I know... In the Range of around 900-1400 USD nothing has changed for some Years... Maybe you've heard anything Else?? Thnx, 🥁🥁🥁 PS: Love to watch your Review Videos 👌🏻👌🏻
Any chance you can make a video on how to load sample from GGD or EZ Drummer onto the new prime module? Im new to e-drums and trying to figure it all out lol
That crosstalk demonstration is crazy! Noticed it on a few other videos. Easily fixed which is is great, but how does a clap create crosstalk on specific toms and cymbals depending on where and how loud you clap?
I am quite interested to know about the choke function. On the strike pro for example you have to use a decent amount of pressure to choke the symbol. How is the choke function on the prime?
Could anyone confirm if you are able to plug in different brand’s hi hats into this alesis ekit? I asked alesis’s customer service and they gave a complicated answer. I would rather have an ekit hi hat with two rubber cymbals that open and close and don’t move around as much as I play. “Regarding compatibility with other brands, this can be a bit complicated. The cymbals and drums have multiple zones requiring more complicated signals than just on/off messages that some triggers provide to modules. I cannot guaranty any compatibility outside the Alesis brand, but you can always experiment.”
i have yet to hear you operate the HH footpedal to 'splash' the hats (no stick on the open/close). Can you do that with the electronic kits you review? Just operate the HH with foot only?
Yeah every kit works with VST's MIDI is universal in electronic drums. As for USB audio recording, I think it's coming soon but not here as of the current firmware
Looks like most of the limitations are purely software ones and hopefully may be fixed in the future updates. Still a solid choice, I'd say. But anyway, the best Alesis can do with it is to release the module's operating system as open source, provide the hardware specifications, datasheets, SDK and so on. Then the community will pick up the development and it will become the most loved e-drumming platform ever.
@65Drums what i thought I tried out the strata at Guitar Center wasn't impressed, also being at GC set up for a while the thing was trashed ,filthy ,disgusting shape .kick was shot as well as speaker ,so playing experience sucked I am lucky I bought the mimic last year it has served me well recording
@ if someone sets up the strata properly, it’s actually delivering a lot of value, I enjoyed it. But there are levels to this, the mimic is just more expensive, more mature, and just nicer
@65Drums well said ,it was a awesome upgrade from the td 30 unit which I have as well .I use the mimic with the TD 30 I bought 12 years ago ,heavy duty Frame. Sounds awesome even though there's not digital pads involved. I will say this the mimic hi hats are the best with the roland I have ever played.
I'm just worried because the strata hi hat is getting sent power down the cable. And 3rd party hi hats aren't designed that way. Regardless I don't actually KNOW if it's a real issue, because it does still work
@@65Drums The cable which has the power just isn't connected so it has no opportunity to cause damage. It seems the module is just doing what it should be doing and ignoring the fact that the power source is unplugged. Which is a good thing for people looking to get the module separately.
@@jimbo121 The power is sent down the quarter inch controller cable which is connected, not an external power brick. I doubt it's very much current, but enough to power the magnet sensor and light up the LED.
Does anyone know if it is feasible to transplant the triggers in these pads into acoustic shells? I think there is a lot to like about this kit but the looks and form factor are an issue for me.
@@65Drums Thanks, Justin. I think you’re 100% right. After digging into it some more I’m going to go the route you suggested. I’ve decided to start with just converting a snare drum to try to use with my nitro mesh kit for a while. If that baby step goes well, then I’ll do a larger conversion kit down the road and simply buy a module and symbol pads to go with it. From watching all of your videos and doing my own research, I think that the introduction of the touchscreen Prime module and the DWe kit suggests to me that there might be a big leap coming in the next generation of flagships that could be worth waiting for rather than buying a TD-50x now. Thanks again.
🤣🤣 ok. It's all good. I was just curious because it doesn't look like it does from photos but Dolby drums says it does so I'm not so sure I can trust that. Ya know?
Honestly i dont want anything to do with alesis 😅 but genuinely so glad i found ur channel. First thing i do when im searching for something is see if you made a review on it
Dude Can you Please tell me if l can connect External Speakers to the kit?? So l don't have to use headphones all the time. No one seems to answer this question!!?? Thanks.
Of course you can. You use the left right TRS, XLR out or even a headphone to RCA or XLR adapter. My Strike pro is connected from my TRS outs to my mixer, then to my JBL srx kit.
Question: I built a Mike Portnoy style drum kit: th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfU0cs0SVQcwVqrXEliYEK1sxiDijs8pb For the extra pads and cymbals, I used MIDI cable to connect a TD-20 module to a TD-30 module. All sounds were generated by the TD-30. I noticed that this Alesis Strata Prime module also has MIDI In, can it receive MIDI signals from other module and assign sounds to them? I really love the sound of this Alesis kit! Thank you!
I appreciate you mentioning all measures in metric
true, this way he can reach out to non-US viewers as well.
The clapping cross talk is pretty funny
Ya it is!

That's awful! Is there really no way to separate the channels? As you describe it, it is absolute worthless for Live-Performance...
Perhaps killing the ambience and sending dry/clean outs to foh and reaply from there some fx

Help!
Justin, do think Alesis delivers the value they're hoping for with the Strata Prime at this price point?
Would the Strata Prime be a good option for a studio kit for a small home studio?
Are there more inputs to add more cymbals to the kit? If so, how many?
This is the vid Ive been waiting for. Thanks Justin. Yet Im still confused about hat compatibility. Love my strike pro hat setup (yea I know). You seem to say it would be compatible with this latest module. Is that true? And all other strike components also? Was hoping to get the module stand alone.down the road.
what do you think of this vs Efnote 3x ? What do you think is better?
Hey man quick question.
I have the Yamaha DTXpress IV
And was wondering if the TD17KV series would have a better module and would sound better?
The TD27 is lile 5k here in Canada lol and the TD17 is just a 2500 more or less.
I currently trigger SD3 on my ATOE conversion using a Strike module with good results. Do you think the Strata is a better option?
Ove got the strata and haven't noticed any load in times with the current update.
You should must know that Alesis has some little different wiring to handle 2 & 3 zones far different from Roland and Yamaha pads or cymbals so if you change the wirings of the alternative cymbals or pads they could work naturally good i think!Do you check something like this? Thank you for much detailed video as always!!
Hi Justin, can you mount the module on your right instead? Like the yamaha setup
Thank you for answering my question! I'm sad to learn that I won't be able to properly output 6 channels to FOH. That really is a deal breaker for me. We currently run an electric kit that can only do mono/stereo, and from song to song, the drummer's dynamics shift more than I'd like. - Anthony
Hi Justin!
I'd be curios about If Alesis had any Plans to put out a new Drumset in the "mid priced" Range🤔
They did a new beginner Set and the Strata Prime but nothing in between as far as I know...
In the Range of around 900-1400 USD nothing has changed for some Years...
Maybe you've heard anything Else??
Thnx, 🥁🥁🥁
PS: Love to watch your Review Videos 👌🏻👌🏻
I think then this has confirmed I’ll be buying the expanded addition and I will be one damn happy camper, and buy the pearl demon XR pedals for it
Zourman is good. I am using it with lemon cymbal on my dtx900
So when is Roland going to release their answer to the alesis?
Give them time lol
td27kv 2
@@Ben-ic1ve hopefully prices of exist go down , make room for new. That’s what I’m waiting for
Do you really think Roland is concerned about the Alesis Strata kit???
@@rogerwhitsettdrummer2922 I hope. Competition is good.
Any chance you can make a video on how to load sample from GGD or EZ Drummer onto the new prime module? Im new to e-drums and trying to figure it all out lol
I wonder if I record this kit into a daw can it show as audio from this kit into a track or option for midi notes in a piano roll
Would love to know how compatible it is with diy center cone pads
I wanna know how the Strata Prime module stacks up against the Pearl Mimic Pro??
can you say add addictive drum libraries to this? I havent seen any videos where people are adding new sounds or kits.
Super easy
@@derekmaynard5619 sweet. Thanks
How do cymbal swells sound? One of my biggest complaints with ekits is that it sounds horrible.
Is it better to play edrums with nylon head drumsticks or regular drumsticks? Just curious.
wood as it's quieter.
Ive noticed that wood tips leave marks on my Roland cymbals. Nylon tips dont.
With only 1 AUX input, how would someone add 3 or more cymbals? I hate being limited to a small amount of cymbals with these modules.
i have yet to hear you operate the HH footpedal to 'splash' the hats (no stick on the open/close). Can you do that with the electronic kits you review? Just operate the HH with foot only?
Or pop into a guitar center
65 drums has become the defacto e-kit channel.
How does this kit work with Superior Drummer or other VST?
Can you record audio via USB? Its not in the manual so probably not.
Yeah every kit works with VST's MIDI is universal in electronic drums. As for USB audio recording, I think it's coming soon but not here as of the current firmware
Can I use 250 ohm headphones with the strata prime module?
Looks like most of the limitations are purely software ones and hopefully may be fixed in the future updates. Still a solid choice, I'd say. But anyway, the best Alesis can do with it is to release the module's operating system as open source, provide the hardware specifications, datasheets, SDK and so on. Then the community will pick up the development and it will become the most loved e-drumming platform ever.
I tried it twice it's pretty cool
Currently the expanded set is $300 off on sweetwater so thats definitely a better deal than the 1000 dollar expansion pack.
Curious here which is better the Mimic or this module, thanks in advance
The mimic is the better module. The unfortunate thing is, Pearl stopped manufacturing it
@65Drums what i thought I tried out the strata at Guitar Center wasn't impressed, also being at GC set up for a while the thing was trashed ,filthy ,disgusting shape .kick was shot as well as speaker ,so playing experience sucked
I am lucky I bought the mimic last year it has served me well recording
@ if someone sets up the strata properly, it’s actually delivering a lot of value, I enjoyed it. But there are levels to this, the mimic is just more expensive, more mature, and just nicer
@65Drums well said ,it was a awesome upgrade from the td 30 unit which I have as well .I use the mimic with the TD 30 I bought 12 years ago ,heavy duty Frame. Sounds awesome even though there's not digital pads involved. I will say this the mimic hi hats are the best with the roland I have ever played.
Why is it not possible to save data to USB or SD CARD??
How would a set of electronic hats get damaged by using another module?
@@65Drums oh I did not know that! Then yeah, I understand the concern now for sure.
Cool I want one
Does anyone know if it is feasible to transplant the triggers in these pads into acoustic shells? I think there is a lot to like about this kit but the looks and form factor are an issue for me.
i wouldn't. Just buy some internal triggers from a company that specializes in making them, like UFO Drums or Drumtec
Just out of curiosity does the lemon t950 module have midi in or out since you reviewed it a couple weeks ago?
Bro I've already forgot. I did use USB midi on that kit though, so it does have that. Don't remember about 5pin
🤣🤣 ok. It's all good. I was just curious because it doesn't look like it does from photos but Dolby drums says it does so I'm not so sure I can trust that. Ya know?
Alesis is NOTORIOUS for crosstalk!!
What is cross talk??
Does anyone happen to know how tall the rack is?
Can anyone help me with stacking? Looking to stack sounds on the rims. Example: tambourine, wood block, etc.
Honestly i dont want anything to do with alesis 😅 but genuinely so glad i found ur channel. First thing i do when im searching for something is see if you made a review on it
are the pad inputs splittable ?
Dude Can you Please tell me if l can connect External Speakers to the kit?? So l don't have to use headphones all the time. No one seems to answer this question!!?? Thanks.
Of course you can.
You use the left right TRS, XLR out or even a headphone to RCA or XLR adapter.
My Strike pro is connected from my TRS outs to my mixer, then to my JBL srx kit.
Please somebody answer me. Which one is better? The VH-14D hithat roland, or the strata prime magnet hithat?
Did you watch the video?
@@ProbeGT2 ofcourse. But this is 4 months ago. I allready go for the roland. Strata quality sucks.
Nice follow up. Im still interested but it looks like a few kinks to be ironed out.
The Alesis kits are stepping up their game and sounding alot better for the the price, also nice playing in that intro. 🤘
Hmm so this or td27kv2?
Roland if you want a drum kit now or wait a year to see what the Alesis build quality is like and other issues that will arise.
Question: I built a Mike Portnoy style drum kit: th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfU0cs0SVQcwVqrXEliYEK1sxiDijs8pb
For the extra pads and cymbals, I used MIDI cable to connect a TD-20 module to a TD-30 module. All sounds were generated by the TD-30.
I noticed that this Alesis Strata Prime module also has MIDI In, can it receive MIDI signals from other module and assign sounds to them? I really love the sound of this Alesis kit! Thank you!
Not being assignable is a big problem. Kind of a deal breaker.
I saw this kit in a store and the rack provides a wide footprint so not very good for a small stage.
