Had the pleasure of supporting Cole Joy and Phil Emmanuel in 1988 and 1989 when after a gig Phil Emmanuel offered me a technical guitar lesson. He changed my self taught style with 7 lessons in 50 minutes. We became friends and played a lot over the years and when he sadly passed in 2018, his wonderful wife gave me his OAM medal for his electric guitar playing. I have always kept my promise to Phil and will forever practice every day. Tommy approached me at Phil's service and said he saw a photo of the lesson and asked me about. Before the sevice started he played "Amazing Grace" on his 70 series Maton guitar. Please believe me when I say IMO Phil and Tommy Emmanual are equal as Guitarists!! Wow !! Rock In Peace Phil and thank you Mate. Congratulations Tommy. Cheers to both with Love. Johno
As much as I love Tommy his brother Phil deserved more recognition for his talent and skills, they are the same as Tommy’s and they are brothers who have grown up together, and played their hearts out to entertain every night of their lives, it hit me hard when they hugged each other, Phill deserves just as much recognition as Tommy, both legends and inspirations to me.
He does for sure , i played many guitar gigs with Phil for over 5 years .Great times! Tommy chased being on stage all over the world big time though .Tommy even said i am like a soldier when it comes to touring where as Phil shunned away from the spotlight and wasn't so keen on touring overseas .Tommy would sometimes try and get Phil overseas but Phil wanted to chill in Australia playing the local clubs and pubs.
As I saw it, Tommy was the musician and Entertainer who just loved being on the stage.. Phil was an equally talented guitarist, but he didn't need or want the limelight as much. But Phil loved to play the guitar also, and we all loved to hear them.
We were there - attending a concert with Tommy & Phil - and - at the end of the show, the man with the big red book came out! They said - please stay, we have a special presentation. We left the auditorium for about 15 minutes, and upon return - got to see this! Thank you so much for posting it! We were unable to catch it on TV, but certainly enjoyed it! *added* What a great effing show! and THEN this happened, Tommy (& Phil) = so lovely and gracious. They had to have been tired after the show.
Tommy Emmanuel: Talent + humility. Lovely man and a phenomenal guitarist. Couldn't happen to a nicer fella. Saw him play in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Brilliant night
I've just discovered this wonderful guitarist! ...having entered into the guitar world from fiddle, flute, etc. Just incredible talent!! I've never really gotten into other phenom guitarists... but this man? Holy cow!! And what a GENTLEMAN !!
Me too! As an instrumentalist you'll appreciate how he breaks down his playing approach as a "one man band" in this TEDX talk th-cam.com/video/ENJuNCkPfx0/w-d-xo.html
What a great Tribute..i was able to go and see you recently in Berkeley, CA. (2022)Thank you Tommy..I was moved to tears sooo many times as I watched this episode of "This Is Your Life". Much Love to you and yours...
Thanks so much for uploading. Tommy is not only the best guitar player in the world. He is also the greatest soul in the world! Dear Phil, please tell my brother, my sister and my mother best wishes, when you meet them. Rest in peace, Phil! Have a long life, Tommy!
I have had the privilege to watch him play (in the real) as I worked at the basement. Oh those early days and days at the Basement were magic!! I also got to see him with his brother playing with him in those tough years mentioned in this video. Those years for musso's and the temptations were real. To come out the other end of it all and to still be touring is absolutely a tribute to the spiritual healing and power of music. But through it all he has held strong to his way of beating the guitar. Well done - never forget your Australian roots and your heritage- love sharing this as a teacher with those young music teachers.
THIS Video brought tears since I Know TE and my heart broke when he told me Phil and Virginia had passed away. He is the GREATEST HUMAN BEING I have ever met. He is PURE JOY and such an asset to human-kindness
Thank you for sharing this. I took my 80 y/o mom to see Tommy @ the KPBS Studio @ San Diego State University in 2010. We waited in line to get him to sign a CD or DVD. My mom said "the spirit of the Lord shines through your music" He got up and gave her a big hug. He is a very gracious human being as well as an amazing musician.
There's so much to appreciate in this, but Tommy's rendition of "Still Can't Say Goodbye" is a very, very special treasure. He sings so rarely, and this song especially means a lot: it was written by Chet Atkins (who also doesn't sing that often) for his own father, and only passed away a year or two before this would have been set up & filmed. What a touching tribute to both of them to hear Tommy do it here.
Have only just come across tommy his ability and love of music just speaks for its self , i love that his a family man and as in life we have our ups and downs , some people though just have a glow and this man just has that in abundance . And its so true that you can tell a person in there way they play as it hits a cord .
Phil and Tommy loved each other dearly. And they made fabulous music together. Tom always called Phil “The Wizz” as in wizard of guitar. They were each other’s greatest fans.
I saw him live last year in Bangkok. I was very lucky to be right in front and I could hear his fingers move over the fret board. I have never seen or heard anyone play the Guitar Boogie better than Tommy. Fantastic guitarist.
Ive never seen such a touching, most gracious presentation of a wonderful man, a wonderful family and an admirable group of friends and supporting people that made Tommy who he is today. It was so enriching and enlightening to watch these people be so open and candid about even the most personal of subjects. I had tears falling through the entire presentation. Thank you to all that made this show happen. Ill never forget it. I really wont.
Tommy is such a warm and funny guy. His talent is immense! He is a wonderful human being who brings joy to millions. I love his music. His album ONLY is the best guitar album ever - my all time favourite!
I don't understand how anyone would even consider giving a thumbs down to such a touching and personal yet public recording that involves arguably the greatest finger-style player of all time alongside the great Chet Atkins of course. Brilliant video
People are dumb that gives thumbs down. If it's not their style of music or them, you can still give thumbs up. I don't like rap but just how good people can rap with fast talking without taking a breath, I would give them thumbs up. There's nothing awful about Tommy Emmanuel performance.
If it makes you feel any better, statistically for every few thousand views there is an accidental thumbs down. I’ve gone back to videos that I really like and noticed that on my screen the thumbs down button was lit, possibly I hit it while scrolling. At least it makes me feel better than to think anyone would thumbs down something this beautiful… LOL

Wow what a gorgeous story Been watching the 2 brothers for many years and know well his story with the late great Chet but his spiritual journey has answered many questions Ive pondered about concerning his timelessness and pure energy. What a blessing to know this Thank you for the share Tommy Emmanuel..its all in the Name. Hope to see you after the Lockdown back on the Gold Coast/Northern Rivers gig program doing what you do.
Speechless!!! How much love involved in this show. I didnt know about the hard times Tommy endured while being so amazingly good with the guitar. What a humanity lesson...you can be among the best and at the same time on the verge of losing everything...RESPECT!!!
Me , on the inside, wow , ! If all musicians had this as their code , then heaven is full of wonder. All the Glory does GO TO GOD , . AMAZING STORY AND GIFTEDNESS , .
I met him in Toowoomba around 2000 ish... the show finished at Midnight... I spoke to him, I must have seemed dissapointed... he asked me why... I said I forgot to bring my guitar so he would sign it for me. He said... well... race home and get it I will wait!!!!... 20mins later, he signed it and looked me dead in the eye and said... now... "this should get you an extra 20bucks on Ebay"... LOL... omg, what a guy.... I still have that guitar, I never will sell it. Since then he has signed my other Maton as well years later.... Pretty sure he didn't remember me from the first time... thank god!. Go TommyGunn!!!
If you've never seen Tommy play live, take it from me...you are not complete - he is the most amazing guitarist and all-round entertainer...he will blow your socks off!
I saw him in Wollongong He played The Concerto de Aranjeuz by Rodrigo. A Classical piece. Did the percussion on the bell of his guitar. BOOM! Still haven't found my socks.
I love Tommy Emmanuel. And I'm so glad God has helped him. I'll say it now in hopes that all the energy and connection here on TH-cam points God in my direction and He helps me in mysterious ways...because I sure need God now. Thank you Tommy for inspiring me to play better and giving us all amazing music. :)
Tommy this is your day & your life and well deserved I might add, your the best good buddy,❤ maybe one day we will see Billy Strings in the same light! Be safe and many more years of picking & grinning,,,😂😊
You won't believe this, but until just a few years ago I didn't know about Tommy, but I am so glad and thankful that I do now. I do not play any instruments myself, although I love to sing and when I was in school I was always in the choir and of course singing at church. So music has always been the backdrop of my life, probably like you who read this. I really enjoyed getting to know some of his early life...Thank you, Tommy Emmanuel Jnr...!!
Isn't music just wonderful? :) Tommy has brought me so much happiness through his music and inspired me to play. It doesn't matter if you can play at 100km/h or just 3 simple chords. As long as you're enjoying, it that's all that matters. Keep up the great singing :)
I’ve met Tommy and I can tell with all sureness he is, besides THE BEST in all galaxy, he’s one of the most beautiful and simple soul/being I ever met. A bottomless pit of inspiration!
I actually got to see this live when it was Tommy & Phil's 45th Anniversary Concert.. and im still blown away.. So many emotions come flooding back when i see this everytime
Me too!!! I've still got the original admission tickets to The Star (known as Jupiters) Casino for this concert... And what a night of high emotion it was. It couldn't have happened to a more genuine Australian. Long live Tommy!
What an incredibly emotional show. So many beautiful and amazing guests. Quite a tear jerker. Hearing here about Tommy's Christianity, helps me now to understand who he is. We are taught as Christians, that our Spirit, the love of the Lord, should shine out of us like a beacon. Well Tommy has to be one of the very best examples of a shining beacon that l have ever witnessed. He oozes love and joy wherever he is, especially on the stage, with his music. Evidence of that Spirit is found in the thousands of comments, from his fans, on his TH-cam videos
One of the nicest men on the planet, its a rare breed to have that much talent, and to keep your feet firmly on the ground :-) Very real talent, Very real human being x
As someone who stutters, I didn't realise Tommy Emmanuel stuttered too! As a guitarist I look up to him, and he seems like such a wonderful man...and to now find this out, I feel even more admiration for him.
I took my wife to see Tommy at the Sydney Opera House. It was such an amazing evening, he showed there is no genre he is not capable of mastering. There are many great guitarists out there but few if any, hold a candle to Tommy Emmanuel. I just hope he looks after his health well, so he can have as long a life as possible.
How could anyone not Love this guy. That's some life you lived and still living. Congratulations to you and God bless all. Oh and, BTW you're right Tommy, the guitar is a extension of your soul.
I seen Tommy on many occasions but the last time was in 2015 in Vancouver when my wife and I was on holidays there, he is the best guitarist going around, he can take a audience around the world with his music and guitar playing. Superb entertainer and great person
16 years later (2020), and he looks the same! How can this be? I have met Tommy twice after watching his absolutely faultless performances. Not one single wrong note. A few double faults! (lol) Only joking!! I can't play one song without any mistakes. Tommy does a whole show, everytime, perfect.
What a wonderful show. Tommy just absolutely shines in the most joyful way and I'm pretty convinced at this point that he has magic in him 💕 The bond that he and Phil share truly hits you right in the feels. We are absolutely blessed to be living during Tommy's time on earth and many thanks to Vera for guiding him through those darker times so that he could continue safely on his path. Thanks for sharing this gem 🙌💜
My 18-year-old son and I will be seeing Tommy in Elmhurst, Illinois on April 20th! Can't wait. This is a makeup concert, as Tommy became ill back in September.
In mid eighties a mate persuaded a bunch of us to go to a pub in Melbourne to see the Emmanuel brothers, who I had never heard of. Tommy and Phil put on a great show. People yelled out requests and the boys played them. Have been a fan ever since. So sad that Phil is gone.
It's great to see this about Tommy Emmanuel !!! As I watched, I was practicing on my Seagull acoustic Guitar playing and fingerpicking the song "Vincent"
This was so fabulous and I paused to look up his brother and was shocked to learn he had passed on. I just went out and bought a Maton Guitar and it saddens me that I will disgrace it, but I'm very motivated to try and learn some of these licks in spite of being the opposite of Tommy, born with no talent for music. Thank god there is rock music or I'd have nothing that I could play. I live in Hollywood and there are amazing super rock guitarists all around me, but after watching and learning about Tommy, I want to be a picker.
Maton guitars are one of the best made guitars in the world today. And also, it doesn't matter what your skill level is at. As long as whatever you do with it brings you happiness, then that's all that matters. I hope Tommy's playing continues to inspire you to keep at it.
This "memories are made of these" on this gentleman is priceless! I am a fan of him, even so there is hardly no brand connection with those musical brands I am involved with. For me, Tommy Immanuel is not only the best - but most paid it all for music with his priceless passion: sort of sacrificing things for the sake of music. Love this video so much to the very end. Thank you for this legend. God bless you all taking parts of this video.
one of the best things about you tommy is your kindness and a natural person from within yourself that you bring out to show others , and it shows. what a great Australian .
Absolutely awesome I have seen a lot of this is your life shows but nuttin has/can top this one! It caused my screen to get really blurry, Thanks Tommy and all your wonderful family and friends!!!
That was great! Thank you for uploading that. I enjoyed the trip. Agree with the comments below - the greatest duo (RIP Phil) and the greatest guitarist. Phil was as good but he wanted a queiter life. First saw them in '83 around Sydney. I followed their gigs. We would shake our heads in disbelief.
I don’t believe I have ever seen anyone enjoy playing an instrument as much as Tommy. I stumbled onto a TH-cam video of him playing at a Guitar Center demo, or something like that several years ago, and had never heard of him before. I felt a bit cheated for not knowing about him all these years. I feel much the same about Hank Marvin who I have only known about for 7 or 8 years now. It is such a joy to watch both of you perform as your inner happiness simply oozes out of you through your playing. I haven’t quite found my “groove” yet, but I’ll keep looking for it as it must be around here somewhere; I got a late start learning to play guitar (I was 15 when I started) and am a year older than Tommy. Cheers Tommy, and don’t ever quit!
I was enlightened about 8 or 9 years ago and is glad I did not remain ignorant of the joy and intense focus he amazing talent brings to me. I never thought it a complement to say, whether to others or two the artist himsel,f that I believe them to be a great guitar player, he knows that! as of I were in some position that my ranking of their playing has any merit at all, who the fk am I? but I do believe they should know not what I think about them , rather tell them how much I enjoyed their gift, and I mean I am really entranced, and moved and its not often I feel passion in the accent and expression that is a signature of the truly engrossed artist, ...I think they'd rather hear how their talent affects me rather than my amateur and narcissistic judgement of their ability...did I manage to make that understandable? anyway, I waited or years to see him up close and personal, and seldom am I tongue tied, but I was lucky enough for a meet and greet, front row seat, and the bonus of his opening act Gareth Pearson... I have not been so totally engrossed, and the physiological response to the glorious , impossible sounds had moved me emotionally rapt, and to save myself from sobbing in my front row seat, I chose to excuse my self before the encore, and complete this cathartic orgasm , and not feel like a fool for leaving early, knowing that the following night, without meet and greet, I would be sitting the same distance from the artists, but in ft Lauderdale , and have a little more controlled reaction, knowing what was coming, I could allow myself to thoroughly enjoy the emotions, both energetic and positive, as well as the sad minor key things, when he spoke about losing his brother only a month after losinghis sister, the grief I feel for my dead brother got some wings during that song.....allowed myself to flow with the music and let myself feel the spirit. no matter sadness or joy, I enjoyed the fact that I can feel his music and allow myself to feel and know that its ok to be sad. I told him in the first two sentences, " I am Laurel, I am your new weirdo", and my hair was blue and I asked my hat and my jacket, and he asked why did I think I was a weirdo, because I am not typically moved by recorded music the way I responded to the first few YouT videos that I watched only happened with live music, and I had to wait 8 years to see what a live performance would do ...did I mention I am a diagnosed, "chronic empath"? but most important, as you said that led me to rite all this, sir, I only found out about you 8 or 9 years ago, and I am so glad because there are just a few things in my life I am truly glad to have known, that I didn't miss for my whole life,,, you are on that list... that was a great smile from him. so now I totally have a crush on him for making my girlish sentiment seem important. and now , II thought, what else have I been missing? there that is chapter one
so bloody great to see this. i think tommy is literally god's gift.. being the best all-round guitar player ever is merely one of many glories he brings to this world. such an effulgent soul.. everyone is transported beyond themselves in his presence - no black clouds can survive while he shines. how many millions of people has he delighted with his opulence night after night for over half a century.. and my word, thank god for youtube.. for over a decade i've been fortunate to thrill to his performances and appreciate his warm and generous personality - if it wasn't for uploads here, i doubt i would ever have heard of him so i'm very grateful for that. thank you tommy e. bless you forever.
T.E. is such a beautiful soul. Australia should be proud, he has not only represented Au for his fingerprinting music, but also been a brand ambassador for Maton guitars, which had now became my dream guitar, not because of Tommy, but because of his protégé, Joe Robinson. Tommy's not only a great player but a great teacher as well. The time that he takes with each one of his fans and also with the young players that get one on one time with him back stage.

I have to say how Tommy exudes humanity. What a pleasure to watch and listen.

Tommy this is your day & your life and well deserved I might add, your the best good buddy,❤ maybe one day we will see Billy Strings in the same light! Be safe and many more years of picking & grinning,,,😂😊
YOUR GREATEST GIFTS ARE YOU, YOU CAN NOT BE JUST IN A BOOK, PLEASE JUST CONTINUE PLEASING YOU AND ALL OUT HERE LOVE STAY TRUE.
I had the immense thrill to see Tommy play live just once, at the Cambridge Folk Festival several years ago. He was simply stunning.
One of the nicest men on the planet, its a rare breed to have that much talent, and to keep your feet firmly on the ground :-)
Very real talent, Very real human being x
As someone who stutters, I didn't realise Tommy Emmanuel stuttered too! As a guitarist I look up to him, and he seems like such a wonderful man...and to now find this out, I feel even more admiration for him.
Look at that beautiful Gold Coast so glad to call this place home since 2017.
I believe I was at the same show a few years back. Simply mesmerizing
This video probably brought the most happiness to me since I started watching youtube
How could anyone not Love this guy. That's some life you lived and still living. Congratulations to you and God bless all. Oh and, BTW you're right Tommy, the guitar is a extension of your soul.
Very cool never saw this vid before. Made my day. Will be see Tommy live this Wednesday, yea!
This dude blows and by blows I mean blows the roof off every place he plays!! Keep rockin Tom!!!
I seen Tommy on many occasions but the last time was in 2015 in Vancouver when my wife and I was on holidays there, he is the best guitarist going around, he can take a audience around the world with his music and guitar playing. Superb entertainer and great person
Thanks for posting. My Favorite Guitarist of all time!
16 years later (2020), and he looks the same! How can this be? I have met Tommy twice after watching his absolutely faultless performances. Not one single wrong note. A few double faults! (lol) Only joking!! I can't play one song without any mistakes. Tommy does a whole show, everytime, perfect.
CGP!
God bless you, Tommy! God has richly blessed us with your talent. You bring light in a dark world. Thank you for your art! 👍💖🎸😎✝
such a touching song for his dad!
It was originally recorded by his mentor, Chet Atkins.

Thank you SOOOOOO much for uploading this!!! That's a treasure!! So much great content on the life of the n1 acoustic guitarist in the world!!
so much more than the greatest guitarist, He's a wonderful person. wish I could meet him. Emotional experience for me. Thanks for the video
Go to one of his shows. He comes out afterwards to meet his fans. I have met him twice. Wow!
@@tommyemmanuelfanpage I've sold many guitars. I will never sell this one. Thanks
I've watched Tommy for years. This is outstanding. Such a wonderful tributel
one of the best things about you tommy is your kindness and a natural person from within yourself that you bring out to show others , and it shows. what a great Australian .
You have helped me be a. Better guitar player thank you my friend 😎👍
All I can say is THANK YOU very much for this.
what a nice and humbled guy he is ... I do love him
Absolutely awesome I have seen a lot of this is your life shows but nuttin has/can top this one! It caused my screen to get really blurry, Thanks Tommy and all your wonderful family and friends!!!
Wow i missed this when it was on the TV, but never to late glad i watched it. I really enjoyed it.
Truly dedicated to music & warm , friendly . Unbelievable talent . God Bless him . Thanks for posting .
Best in the world?!!!! I'd buy that!
Proud to say I've met Tommy and shook his hand in Moncton, NB, Canada. Very nice man and puts on a fantastic show.
This is just the best video ever.
Deepest Respect. Thank you for upload of this rare video.
We just saw him in Augusta. Phenomenal showman and wonderful show
These two brothers are amazing!!!
Wonderful, Thanks and well done from South Africa. You're amazing. God Bless
Such a nice guy!
Best in the world, hands down. We’ve experienced his shows twice, and will never forget them.
This was a great treat for me. I discovered Tommy thru Chet. Loved him a long long time.... He gave us Joscho... How good is that?
so bloody great to see this. i think tommy is literally god's gift.. being the best all-round guitar player ever is merely one of many glories he brings to this world. such an effulgent soul.. everyone is transported beyond themselves in his presence - no black clouds can survive while he shines. how many millions of people has he delighted with his opulence night after night for over half a century.. and my word, thank god for youtube.. for over a decade i've been fortunate to thrill to his performances and appreciate his warm and generous personality - if it wasn't for uploads here, i doubt i would ever have heard of him so i'm very grateful for that. thank you tommy e. bless you forever.
Greatest guitarrist to e v er lived,amazing person,humble,loving person,phil played my guitar in a rest. I was playing,amazing also!!!
Thanks for showing us that wonderful show here in the US
The Show, is FANTASTIC!😀
Tommy, is a FANTASTIC Guitarist, too...
Love IT!
T.E. is such a beautiful soul.
That was absolutely brilliant.
