The steric acid that I buy is tiny little granules and sometimes they don’t dissolve in the soap, so what I do is I run it through a blender first to completely pulverize it, and it works so much better that way it seems to activate better and then I don’t have any tiny little pits in my soap From undissolved 😊steric acid.

      Hi Donna.
Do you use stearic acid or citric acid?
Stearic acid is not water soluble it's like a wax and need to be melted with your oils.
Citric acid disolves in water and are used a a chelator in soapmaking to reduce soap scum in hardwater, I have a separate video on that. .

@@saponify6677 I use steric acid and add it to the heated oils . Thanks for your videos!! Very helpful. I’m 68 and have been soaping for 40 years. I love that I’m still learning! You have taught me the “why” I use steric acid.
In the early 90s a friend gave me a recipe that included steric acid and I’ve made that soap this long without knowing the why until now. 😏🤭 those were pre TH-cam days , the days you read books and passed on recipes to friends and family!

I so know the feeling of pre-TH-cam, pre-Google, pre-cellphone days. I've been making soap for a bit more than 15 years (lost the actual count) and still learn every day.

When I use stearic acid, I add it to the melting of the solid oils/butter. But when I use a microwave, I melt those solids completely, then add it and stir until it's melted. Then I carry on with the rest of the recipe.

It depends on whatvkind of soap you want to make. To just increase the longelivity of your soap as little as 2% will make a huge difference. If you want it make a dual lye shaving soap you can increase it to 15% but you will need to do a hot process soap as it wil come to trace immediately.

Soapmakingfriend.com does have an option to add citric acid in the calculator and it will recalculate the required lye for you. 🌼
