    You don't have to remove the motor. You should be able to pull the shaft back enough to get at the motor side.

    I have a 2007 Kawasaki Vulcan/Nomad 1600 with 10,700 miles on it. The manual is not clear on when to lube the drive shaft. I just changed the rear tire so I lube the splines where the tire mounts onto with moly. Should I have lubed the actual drive shaft to?

    So you can get the splines lubed with the motor on but not the universal joint correct? I'm not taking my motor off no way Jose.

    Hey Andrew, I have a question if you don't mind assisting. I have an 85 XV1000 and I snapped my FD oil drain nut off. Luckily, I have a Maxim X parts bike and the FD seems to be exact so I replaced it. I noticed when I took out the shaft, it just popped out. When I put the new one in, all seemed fine. I had a hard time finding How To videos on how to do this so I want to make sure there wasn't anything else I missed. It seemed straight forward. Was I supposed to replace anything when re-installing this? Thanks

      Sounds about right. There should be a spring at one end of the shaft to keep the lash at bay. As long as that is in there you should be good.

    Hi Andrew,
    I found your video because there is a very noticeable click/ticking noise coming from the final drive area of my bike (sounds like down in that unit) with every rotation of the wheel, whether clutch engaged or not. I ride a 1986 Honda Magna, 700cc, 18k miles.
    I am concerned about the noise for both safety and mechanical reasons. But I don't have the experience to know how warranted my concern is.
    Any ideas what could cause such a repetitive ticking/clicking sound?
    I am tempted to say it is only at low speeds. But I think that's just because as speed increases the engine noise drowns it out. It's probably still there, just not noticeable once over 20mph or so.
    My bike is my primary mode of transport. And I'm still riding it with this problem. But I don't want to be putting myself at a huge risk. Yet if it's something I could fix on my own, that would be welcome news too.
    Thanks for your videos, as well as any thoughts you might have on the above.

      +N.M. Owen I've been told that when the rear wheel is not properly aligned or bolted up to the rear drive hub it can create that clicking sound you've mentioned. Try pulling the rear tire off and re-aligning it.

    My bike will turn on and run and go into gear but wont move at all and theres somewhat of a grinding noise. Just wondering if it could be the drive shaft?

    • @Garage_Tinkerer
      @Garage_Tinkerer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be, could also be the clutch or transmission. Can you tell where the grinding is coming from? Clutch is the easiest to check and replace so I'd start there.

    I am working on a 1981 Yamaha XV750 Virago. It's shaft driven too. I am taking everything apart and in my case the U-join is attached to the transmission on the engine with a nut. I am trying to remove it but I am having no luck. How did you remove the drive shaft from the engine on your bike? Thanks!

      Thank you for prompt response! This info. helps a lot!! Worse case, I may need to order some parts from here. I am doing an electric motor conversion on this bike and this is where I am making the connection. Again, thank you!!
