Correct in regards to parasitic power loss (with shaft drive). Moreover; unless you can do some kind of mojo with a ring and pinion gear; you can't change the final drive ratio with a shaft drive. It all depends on what you want -- reliability and less maintenance (shaft drive) or something different (shaft to chain). Shaft to sprocket/chain requires a LOT of machine shop time -- NOT for a novice builder or someone without big bucks.

There are many Yamaha Vmax's that are converted over to chain drive by PCW in New York for the purpose of changing the final gear ratio-it puts more torque to the ground and as well as the horsepower.

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Absolutely! If someone wants to take a power bike like that and convert it for the purpose of gaining the extra power to ground plus the versatility of changing sprockets out for different ratios then that is a different story! I still say it should be done by a pro, and obviously if someone is doing that to a Vmax for those reasons they wouldn't be coming to me for advice on it probably hahaha. Thanks James!

I am looking at doing a conversion on a 2019 suzuki m109r. Would a belt setup work better? I just dont like the side torque of the shaft.

  • @jameshisself9324

Forget the HP losses, standard shaft drive puts horrendous loads into the rear suspension and will typically put the rider in a position where if he closes throttle mid corner, he **LOSES** ground clearance and bangs hard parts into the pavement. This is at highly elevated velocities in the first place, so if you don't ride fast you will never know or care about this.
The next question is: is there something about this shaft drive bike that makes it important for you to convert it? There are a few, and the V-Max comes to mind. Large displacement versions of the 'same' engine but were only ever shaft drive is another. Often a simple bolt in for much more displacement, except of course the shaft.
You make the excellent point that if someone is watching this video, they are probably not qualified to do this. You also ended your title with a question mark, so you aren't solving anyone's problems here.
    Thanks?

Of course he's helping people ! He's given them the best practical advice. If you want a shaft driven motorcycle, then just buy one, but don't bother converting yours in your garage, because it's difficult, expensive, time consuming, but in the end,...it's unnecessary !

@@intergalacticbasketballdro7186 Thank you captain obvious. Your comment has little to no value. But I guess you felt good making it!
Don't ever assume that people that criticize or thumbs down this video are 'fools'. The people that already know what a foolish endeavor it is to try to convert are the people you should be listening to. If they are not making videos and spouting away about it doesn't make them less knowledgeable, just less noisy. Think about that.

He does have a valid point on that. However in this case. I was Basically just wondering if any machining work or welding work was going to be needed Or if it was all basically just Switching out parts. He did an excellent job of answering. I think I should have done a better job of wording my question. 😂 This bike is an 85 Yamaha verago with the xv 1000 limited edition. Essentially the same bike from from Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man. I picked the thing up for 600 bucks because an old man in the mountains couldn't figure out how to get it running. It had been kept in a garage. I got it home and had it running in a 1/2 hour. the valves just needed adjusted. 🤷‍♂️ I'm only the 2nd owner and the thing runs like it's brand new. the original pipes Don't even look like they've been hot. I'm just not a big fan of shaft drive. Bought it to flip it. But now I might keep it. Unfortunately I still haven't done any more work to it. Had to take a break and put an engine in my truck

@@funkymonkey529 That movie had an HD FXLR, not remotely the same as an 85 Virago. That is generally a good thing as the Yamaha is a far more reliable bike but supremely uncool in the wrong circles since it is one of the worst examples of a Japanese copy of an HD. Dreadful when looked at in that way, but best not to.
There have been many conversions of Viragos into infinitely cooler bikes, but few if any succeed in converting the shaft to chain. Most don't even try. A really great example is a builder named Greg Hageman who more or less made a name for himself doing Virago conversions. Here is one of my favorites, but you will note no attempt is made to shed the shaft. www.bikeexif.com/yamaha-virago-920

Couldn't you do that if you used a motorcycle engine in a cross kart or other 4 wheeled vehicle?

I have some suggestions for your next videos: "Grease - should you smear it on your bike's brake disks and tyres or not?" Or how about "Should you replace your bike's handlebars with a steering wheel?" Or what about "Should you put water in your fuel tank?" I think you should investigate these burning issues next.

Yes, you can do it and it will save almost 60 lbs! I did it on my Kawasaki 1500 shaft drive 2004.
You have to have skills. I used a Honda cb750 final drive sprocket and drill it with 8 holes .( You have to use a indexing table on a milling machine. You also must make the oil going into the Carden final drive return to the engine oil pan. Law of physics says you connot compress a fluid. You will have oil leaks. I have posted all of these steps online through a forum. No one was interested. There is NO bubble plastic kit that just bolts on.

A logistical nightmare really! You have to remove the shaft and do a longer extended swingarm like with a chain, then you either have to engineer and install a longer shaft or convert the motorcycle over to chain. Most people extending a shaft drive bike will convert to chain because it's much easier than trying to install a longer shaft itself.
