Watch 'Wardens - Episode 5' here: • Wardens | Episode 5: O...
In this episode:
Montana Game Wardens patrol the high country during winter with snow mobiles. It's also elk season, and the wardens check for compliance with hunting laws.
When your job is protecting our most precious natural resources in some of the nation’s most remote areas, there is rarely a dull moment. Wardens chronicles the lives of Conservation Officers in America. The show features the men and women who protect public lands, from ride-alongs on interstate game checks, to anti-poaching sting operations; from remote snowmobile trails in grizzly bear country, to unforgiving white-water rapids. While the focus of Wardens is enforcement of regulations, the show takes special precautions to ensure the general public understand those who would violate the rules are the minority and the vast majority of encounters with our Wardens are law-abiding citizens.

I've always wanted to be a game warden. I love the outdoors and conservation of the land and animals for hunting.
That goofy woman should not be hunting, should have tossed the book at them and loss of privileges for life. Pure carelessness.
Go from feeling just pissed about the wounded elk and deer to smiling because the Winter special Olympics is super awesome!!
Yeah that bothered me quite a bit as well. My wife works with adults with challenges and has several that participate in the Special Olympics here in Florida. Made me pretty happy to see a winter games style of games.
This is not a recent show. Don't worry too much.
It’s people like the older men in the Suburban that give the rest of us hunters a bad name.
These wardens are awesome. There not trying to just write situations. They are trying to educate sportsman. I’m sure we have all been there. A halibut just under size. Salmon out of season. It’s very easy to be tempted to do the wrong thing.
You bust people for having a beer, but you let that lady go, after shooting 5 elk. She should have been arrested. Those are the people that ruin it for everyone!!!!
I live in Tn and I get the hunting regs to in the mail. Here in Tn the state changes something about every year and I make sure I read what’s new for the hunting season before anything else.
3/4 different stickers for a snowmobile in middle of NOWHERE seems un-American lol
Almost bought a house overlooking flathead lake a few years ago, but ended up deciding on Idaho due to some policies/laws… about 20 mins from the Montana border so I still get to check out the Zone 1 area (Glacier, paradise, plains, hot springs, etc.)
In Idaho We call those kind of hunters killer bee's,most are from the city.
All these different permits and stamps are RIDICULOUS!
Not really. That’s how you get to ride nice groomed trails and have a rescue service if something goes wrong. It’s actually dirt cheap if you compare it to private areas.
If this happened in Washington State.. they ALL would have been jacked up. Gear seized and huge fines... garrenteed
Guarantee
As they should be
To soft on offenders!
That's one VERY young State!
A big problem i have is when people shoot at a herd of elk killing or wounding many i think they need to be fined big time or even jail and take away hunting fishing rights for ever and even confiscate the animal.
I spend to much time on this comment and I turned political and deleted it lol. So shorten. I feel they need a strict fine but should be like 5 years off hunting/fishing. Not forever. But agree on penalty and possible jail depending on situation. And some situations maybe up it to 10 years or permanent even in some or something. IDK Its horrible no matter what if it was purpose or maybe they really didnt realize and the strict fine will teach them. Ok I ramble Im just going to send it!
Always some trigger happy one
Adult should have went to jail over the elk shooting.
Too many permits and regulations in Montana. I'd be worried every time I went out that I had forgotten to get some kind of paperwork (and of course paid the appropriate fees).
It don’t matter who or where but just shooting in amongst the herd like that ain’t right. Pic a animal and get a clear shot at it instead of wounding a bunch
Free for all shooting in Montana, what the hell
So the kid Hunter was with two adults & y'all had witnesses who said they shot while other hunters were in range but the kid & adults get off Scott free! Really?????
I love how they keep saying at 10 below like that effects the shot
It affects the shooter especially if they shoot offhand.
@@freedomlover8412 that is the irresponsibility of the shooter. They act like the cold makes it impossible to hit or find you animal. I guess I have spent to much of my life in weather like that.
Tough job. A lot of guessing. What if they guy in the Jeep had not been a landowner. He was already over the radio as the shooter from his vehicle.
My father would have never allowed this.
Don’t know much about elk hunting but it seems you all are driving them instead of stalking.
feed the dogs!
Shooting from a vehicle is so unsportsmanlike and lazy and so very wrong!!!!they should be fined heavily and get hunting privileges taken away permanantly
That’s the most solid and steady rest youre going to find to get an efficient kill
I also have to say Montana might have some strange laws, but the game wardens are extremely lenient. Pennsylvania is a lot more quicker to fine and confiscate gear. However i do hope that kid learned his lesson and tries again in a more ethical way.
They are not this lenient in real life...this is almost a joke compared to how most interact while not being filmed.
Take him and adults to jail !
Land of the free. Except you need a license or a permit for everything.
Wow, just to have fun in Montana. You have to buy a permit for everything. What a rip off take it out of my taxes.
game wardens are the true pigs
Cats ARE NOT endangered or going extinct. Honestly, ingnorance is bliss! Some people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Go eat your lettuce and let the grownups take care of things. You all will cry when the cats come on your porch and eat your cat, just sayin
BS about the permit to pick berries on our land.
My taxes and license paid for those berries.
They used to have a auction in Bozeman and sell each elk and deer or parts of to the highest bidder many years ago but there is so many more irresponsible people running around shooting willy nilly , there probably isn't time for that anymore.
Why are they hunting Mountain Lion?? They are few & far between! Outrageous! Trophey hunters suck!
Maine or NH wardens take em to jail
Safety police! Do you have all 9 special use permits to be here?
Nothing like taxing people and then charging them to use public land.
Someone breathing in Montana.. game warden.. do you have a permit to breathe in Montana? It actually cost $10 a year if you want to breathe our air.
Sounds about right
Strawman
Jesus, you might as well get a loan before you go to Montana to have fun because everything cost you money What a money hungry state
I heard the lady say i didnt want to shoot two so i really dont think she hit those other ones granted she didnt make a kill on the one she put down, but she did get that one. Who's to say how many nonsportsman shot into that heard beforehand and just left
Why not have the game warden the condition use permit. For those that don’t have them.
Shooting five elk…that would never pass as acceptable in illinois whitetail season…midwest hunters are just raised differently than these western hunters who just drive their trucks around looking for herds to blast into…
What does the temperature have to do with anything? Seems like the wardens are animals rights activists. First off if you hunt long enough you will wound an animal. Makes most hunters sick when this happens but it does happen. Hopefully the kid learns from this.
Charging ppl for a permit to use state land seems morally wrong. Just tax ppl more enough with the permit bs
Come on. Shooting a tree animal. Soo wrong!!!
Why are these lazy hunters shooting into a compacted herd??? Hunters are typically the best conservationists. But not the kid & his party or the land owner with the woman hunter!
And this week on the Montana tyrants we see that the tyrants will collect more fees and taxes to use the public lands use … how many ways can we tax people and fine people !
Well for a state without sales tax you may have to get creative….
Why do private property owners in Montana have to make a contract with F&G to hunt on their own property or have hunters? F&G need more $$?
Rec use permit. lol what a bunch of trumped up bull. we the people already pay for enough bull. I will never go to Montana period. MY home state is so much better. REC USE PERMIT IS just another way for them to get you're money.
Shooting a cat for just a trophy is totaly wrong.
I totally agree! The only time I feel that it's acceptable is when you have a problem cat stalking your herd.
We're not the British.
Lord Limey: Look, it's the last of its species. 💥
By jove, I think I've got it!
It is legal and humane way to control the population I use coon hounds to hunt raccoons its a legitimate way to hunt according to the laws
I so agree this is why so many animals are going extinct or endangered nowadays? Even the trees.
Mountain lion is pretty good white meat actually. But nice assuming you know what they did with nothing to back it up.
Charging a 50$ trophy fee is wrong
This is why children should not be allowed guns
It is the two adults who should have taught him better! Hunting is great. Most hunters are the best conservationists but then there are the few who go out once per year & think it's a free for all.
Sad to shot the big cat you shot it in a tree what a hero...Not
That’s an odd ego flex to think hunting and wildlife conservation is about being a hero…
@@bpdp379Oh quiet! Everyone knows what was meant! Using dogs to chase the cat up a tree & surrounding it so the shooter can stand under the tree to kill it is not actually skillful. I don't like trophy hunters either. I betcha that cat's meat is wasted & it'll only be mounted. It'd be different if there were an over abundance of Mountain Lions but there are not.
@@RobbieAmerican that’s an odd ego flex as well to think that hunting and conservation is about skill…
Too many lions in Western Montana? Are you a wildlife biologist working with mountain lions? Are you aware of some data the biologists don’t have? They seem to have data that supports the populations are healthy and self sustaining. But please point us to this information you have.
If you are just making an ethical choice than by all means say so and feel free to live in California where hunting is illegal. You are free to not watch online videos about things you find don’t line up with your beliefs.
2 of those cow elk would have survived just fine …..
Ive been hunting 40 yrs and was taught by my dad never point a gun unless you intend to shoot and always know you have a clean shot i grew up in Indiana our game wardens would have been pissed
If this had been in VT and many states, these hunters would have been in serious trouble. They would have at least lost their license. That kid had no business being let loose with such limited experience. He didn't even know what it meant to pick up his brass. That lady said "I'm a terrible shot!" If you're unable to make a clean shot then you shouldn't take it. They just wanted to get her tags filled because her husband's was full. Look at what happens when you don't know what you're doing. The number they donate shows that this isn't a rare problem.
Yeah I wouldn't surprise me she probably just shot in the center the herd and hope to hit something and without even realizing she already hit one, she just kept shooting! I totally despise Hunters that do that, you pick out one animal make a good aim and then fire, then if the animal stumbles or flinches or anyting you go to the last place that animal was when you shot and you look for blood and if there's blood you track that animal until you find it! As far as the kid goes, it's hard enough for a well-seasoned Hunter to hit a running elk, let alone a young kid that's his first year of hunting! 👎👎👎
Normally the husband would kill and use wife's tag around here which is still and maybe more horrible or not depending how you look... But horrible either way....
The adults should've been held accountable!
Exactly, could feed a small country
They should lose there license for 10 years
You have to pay to use public land ?
Public schools are paid by local taxes. How ridiculous!
Park pass that no one knows about seems like a trap. Complete money grab.
Is there anything you can do fun in Montana that doesn’t require a permit, or a license, or your blood type, or the last time you went to the bathroom? Just asking for a friend.
What year is this documentary/show from?
36.43 Warden says this his 1st 2011 license he seen.
@@slimwantedman6694 that's exactly what I was wondering. Heard that myself.
The whole series was released in 2011.
I'm glad too hear the meat goes too food banks and don't go too waste.
Amazing how many bad hunters get off wounding animals that can't be found. That is why there are so many anti hunters. I'm a hunter but I sure agree with anti-hunters in situations like that. Those guy's in the white vehicle should have been fined. Never understood shooting an animal out of a tree. That is not hunting.
She gives not just hunters a bad name, but woman hunters, admitting 'I'm a lousy shot' and blasting away is a disgrace, on the plus side, that game warden shooting freehand at a running Elk, he could teach her a few things, hopefully she got a big fine and loss of privileges
Not sure about how he approached the white vehicle,,he accused them second's in just meeting them,, gonna be interesting 🤔
Yay for the two daughters getting their first bucks!
Here in Tn we have a program called Hunters for the Hungry and if just say me have put in the freezer enough for my wife and me I donate to the program here.
We have the same. Called Montana Hunters Against Hunger.
Dang that was a good shot!!
Not many of them around, what a loss...my children and grand children might never get the chance to see our king of this snowy jungle.
Bs hunter....
Stopping the snowmobilers is ridiculous and shooting cats for trophy is alright
Mountain Lion and Bobcat meat is especially good, treat both like pork when preparing.
I think its absolutley rediculous that the wardens gave the boy such a hard time at 13 for wounding an Elk. Any hunter that is honest will tell you that all of us hunters have wounded a few along the way. Not every single shot is always going to be a kill shot. Yes, i agree it is a learning lesson, but it should have been a lesson learned without grown men hiding behind a badge breathing down the kids throat. Then they kept saying "in this kind of weather", what the hell did the weather have to do with anything. Hell i would love it if it were warm and sun shining when i went to the woods.
C'mon fellow, an offhand shooter or otherwise is going to be shaking in that weather, especially if excited.
He was shooting randomly into a herd. They didn't follow tracks to see if the one went down. Come on! If you're out there shooting without a clear shot, then you should not be out there hunting! It's not spray & hope for the best.
lets see, you have a permit to drive a snowmobile, what about a passing by trees permit? now, do you have a riding and wearing a jacket permit? How about a driving and looking at birds permit? Great, now you have to have a permit for wool sock, got that? Now, how about an enjoyable use permit? without that you cant enjoy the ride.
I think American law enforcement agencies could all reduce wasted time merely by saying "car" instead of VEE- HIC- LE. 🚗🚓👮
You could save hours per year, hours you could spend on the job itself. ⏳⌚
My pappy taught me to never trust anyone who says “vee-HICK-le”…
@@TheAcenightcreeper by saying car I beat you everyday!!
