I did this once in Montana. I saw some antelope on a hillside beside the road about 300 yards and as I was out glassing them as they were the first Antelope I had ever seen for real. And this old guy came down a dirt road on the property and asked me what I was doining,. I told him I was driving to this lodge and saw the small group and just wanted to look at them, We got to talking for about 20 minuets and to my surprise he told me, If you want to, you can go up and they to get that bigger one but dont get off the road, you will have to climb the steep side up behind them. Of course I said yes and thanked him and he left. I drove up the road to the end and started the climb and as soon as I got to the top they had moved right up to almost the top. So withing 10 seconds of reaching the top I had my antelope. Put and rolled him down the hill, loaded him up and as I came down to the main roas there set the warden. He asked if I had permission to be there and I told him yes and he asked who from, I said I didnt know the guy, Of course he thought I was lying. He said the man that owns the land never allows anyone up there. We ended up calling the lodge and the owner told me he knew the guy who owned it and he had his number, so the warden called the guy. And the guy told him that he allowed me to hunt because I told him I saved for 4 years to go on this hunt and he felt like I deserved a fair chance. The warden said that in 23 years he never heard of this old guy letting anyone on his land and he was 100% sure I was not telling the truth. LOL He said I was one lucky guy for sure.
I’ve had things like that happen to me. I think some people think I’m BSing about them. It’s all about how you present yourself, honesty, and tell people how much you appreciate them. From land owners to law enforcement the responses have blown my mind.
Agreed. I've turned in poachers. One I confronted first. He shot an elk during bow season. I was bow hunting. I was expecting him to go for his rifle and figured I'd have to shoot him (I carry a .45 during bow season) but he didn't thankfully. I thought I was about to get my first kill as a civilian! Warden came out and cited the guy, confiscated the elk. The very next year they started giving preference points for turning in poachers! I missed it by one year.

❤ The men and women of the Montana wardens are truly a great bunch. It's an honour to see their dedication to the cause that helps the hunting and fishing community at large. For instance, that one trespassing infraction on Litica could have closed down access to the lakes for countless sportsmen (and women). Their job is to keep things safe and fair for everyone, not to bully hunters. Those that feel bullied are people who have done something wrong. For everyone else, they're ensuring plentiful game for all. God I love these guys😊
It comes down to their training actually! In the same way that cops are trained to be scared of and aggressive towards the people they are charged with protecting, wardens and rangers are trained to be educators first and enforcers second when they are working to protect the resource. The idea is that they get more compliance and it's safer for the wardens when they enforce with the laws through education and connection than would be the case if they defaulted towards punitive enforcement. I went through two annual trainings on this philosophy when I was working as a Wilderness ranger with a Forest Protections Officer certification. I've been lucky enough to meet and work with several of the wardens on this show.
Some hunters don't listen to locals and think they know where boundaries are and can't understand why they end up in a mess. Others just habitually trespassi and poach and try to get away by lying about everything but eventually they get caught.
I am a hunter in South Africa. We dont even need a license. We have game farms with a lot of variety on them. Book hunt, accommodation, guide per hunter and vehicles for taking each hunter to their designated area direct with farm and then pay for whatever animals you shoot. Animals are collected from kill spot taken dressed and hung in chill room while you si sipping beer and enjoying barbecue and the sounds if the night. With all your game, different legislation and rules I cannot believe you have a so much policing and all conducted in the most polite cordial way! Think I must come to Montana. 😊
I understand that the cost of taking fenced in game animals in South Africa is a bit pricy. I did a photo safari with Zulu Nyala and saw a lot of animals I would not see in Colorado. Do not expect to find polite wardens in Colorado. We enjoy our elk herds even when they block traffic.

I think it's an editing thing. The hunter basically said what the warden would've said, but in a more entertaining way. After all, you commented on it, didn't you? We're all adding to the algorithm, my friend. I'm certain that the landowner will be looked up far less favourably, but for the sake of keeping the lands open to block management, they didn't want to publicly humiliate the guy with the land rights. Do you catch my drift?
