    Two new animals have joined the homestead! Bruno and Maisie are two Lionhead x New Zealand rabbits that needed a home and found one with us. The first priority was getting them housed since they couldn't stay in the quail coop! Follow along as I build their new rabbit hutch start to finish using all reclaimed and recycled materials.

    Your editing is great 👍, mine sucks, I should be ashamed lol, why not elevate hutch and collect the free fertilizer, its cold compost, it can be used directly on plants, im building a hutch on top of my compost bins to collect the fertilizer lol

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I've been practicing a lot!
      I ended up re-locating this hutch onto an area that will become a garden bed. So now all the manure will compost in place and build the bed up, then I'll move the hutch when I'm done.
      That being said it's still messy. Building directly over a compost bin sounds quite functional.

      That's a great idea! When I was a kid my dad built our second set of hutches tall enough and wide enough to accommodate a plastic wheeled garden cart under each end (park the barrows between the legs on the short ends of the hutches) so we could dump the poop elsewhere pretty easily. It wasn't cost effective for multiple hutches but for the four we had at the time (1 buck, 2 does, 1 growout pen) it worked pretty well.

    Great demonstration. Do you remember the details of the mesh you used? Gauge.. and spacing?

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! It's 1/4" hardware mesh, I don't remember the gauge it was just whatever they had at the hardware store.

    Very nice rabbit hutch I love it but one thing you should make them a ramp to get up in the little cubby cozy area so they don't jump up or down and hurt their legs

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a great idea! I've since added ramps for the rabbits to get up and down comfortably from the top nests 😀

    what do you have weighing it down? how do you avoid them going underneath it? do you have a ramp for them to get up into their cubicles

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for all the great questions! There's nothing weighing it down other than the weight of the structure itself and its contents. The bottom is covered in 2x4 wire mesh which prevents burrowing out but lets grass in. And yes, I added a ramp afterwards to access the upper loft 👌

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your interest! I don't have a cut list at the moment unfortunately. It's basically a 4x6' rectangle that's 3' tall, constructed out of 2x2 lumber. Hopefully that's enough to get you started!

    Why are you keeping them separate?

    • @Slowsteading

      Rabbits have a tendency to reproduce like crazy, so the male and female remain separated except for controlled breading.
