The truth is that Maria suffered headaches and the Mother Abbess thought that being out of the abbey and into nature might help her. This is revealed in The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp herself

Agree with literally everything you said here. I’ve been in love with this musical my entire life, and with a decade worth of fanfiction - no I’m not embarrassed about it - it’s so much more than a film to me; it’s an entire world, and the characters journey carry it for me far more than the songs.
Also, Elsa is awesome; and I for one never thought she intended to scare Maria to the point where she’d run away. (Also, having Elsa do it is closer to history.)
Love that you used clips from ITV. It’s my favourite version outside the film. NBC was not as bad as I expected, but it was still a hot mess. Costumes were pretty good though.
And now I’m off to watch all your other TSOM video/s.

I've always loved the 'Sound of Music' and I do still, and the reasons for which I do have been constantly evolving. As of late, I've been watching it while a commentary plays on top of it, either from Robert Wise or from the actors (the latter of which also featured the eighth Von Trapp child Johannes, whom Maria bore after the family moved to America). I find it very enchanting to listen to commentaries by the people involved in films, learning things I never knew and coming to appreciate the art and magic of filmmaking all the more (like how the bellrope to the Abbey was added specifically for this movie, but the residents of the Abbey asked to keep it as a souvenir).
I ALSO found out on the commentary of the film is that the real Maria requested a cameo, and she got a brief one in the background during the "I Have Confidence Scene".
Fun fact, there is a biopic movie of the Trapps that pre-dates "Sound of Music" called "Die Trapp Familie", in German. The full movie is available on TH-cam with English subtitles; I speak German, but not I'm not exactly fluent in it.
The part of the story where Maria flees to Abbey as she's having a personal crisis was indeed another part that was fictionalized, as in reality, she did decide to marry the captain and was only going back to get Mother Abyss' blessing. Still, it does provide the character of Maria with an emotionally-resonant character growth (even the costume designer, Dorothy Jenkins, said it's reflected on how when Maria takes on the role of the mother to the children, her clothing was designed to reflect how she has matured as a person, as opposed to the free, untamed spirit she used to be.) It also gives one of my my favortie uplifting, thematic songs from a musical, next to "Someday" and "When You Believe".
Rousing little summation at the end, about the matter of "Happily Ever After" isn't really the end of it. It does bring to my mind something that I'd like ask you...
Have you ever seen the musical "Avenue Q"?
If not, I highly recommend that you do. It's that version of Sesame Street written by the guys who wrote South Park, featuring such classic songs as "Everyone's a Little Bit Rascist", "The Internet is for Porn", and "Schadenfreude". But it's also a very thought-provoking musical that does touch upon what you just discussed there about how so many people in their twenties don't have their life (or their dreams for that matter) figured out, and tied into those are some more underrated songs like "I Wish I Could Go Back to College", "There's a Fine, Fine Line", and "Everything in Life is Only For Now". The musical just had it's last run on Broadway, unfortunately, but there are plenty of excellent recordings of it (I highly recommend the Midvale Main Street Theater one). And I think it too would make an excellent discussion for a video topic. (Not that I want to impose anything on you; you make videos discussing what YOU want to discuss.)
