    I wasn’t crazy about Carrie’s voice. She seemed to force the high notes and she was awkward sometimes. However, when she was in her range, it was beautiful! I loved about Laura’s performance.

    One thing that always amazes me with the play is why the Captain didn’t hear the singing of Do rah me while he is in the house and yet further along in the play he hears The Sound of Music which is such a gentle song.

    The biggest problem with NBC is definitely directorial more than the actors individually. Everyone has the same problem: they’re all too rushed. For an example, right before No Way To Stop It where neither Georg nor Max take a breath before saying their lines. Elsa asks ‘would you defy them?’ and Georg says yes without missing a beat. Accurate - that’s in character. But Max doesn’t give a second for the words to sink in before responding, when he needs to; it’s not the answer he was expecting. Even Audra was done dirty. The bit before Climb Ev’ry Mountain, she sounds like she’s asking Maria about her prom date, not trying to help her with the biggest decision of her life.
    As for the Captain, he’s so much better in the film not just because of Christopher Plummer (RIP) but because he and Ernest Lehman (screenwriter and unsung hero of the film) worked to give the character more depth. And that’s another reason the argument is so much better on film; along with the added scenes of dinner and Georg bursting in at the end of the thunderstorm. The argument comes out of nowhere in the musical; but those two scenes give it more weight. There has been animosity between them, and Maria’s ACTIVELY going against orders, so it makes sense for her to just let it all out. In the show, for all we know they haven’t talked since he left her alone with the children, which was five minutes after they met; and according to the script, six weeks ago in-universe.
    There are actually some very awkward moments in the script. No hate to Lindsay and Crouse, but some lines are cringey. And the scene where Georg tells Maria about the telegram causes me pain. That one actually is Not Good. Thank goodness Ernest Lehman changed that.
    (Cutting No Way To Stop It and How Can Love Survive? from the film was the right decision; the changes made to the movie’s plot don’t serve those songs. Sad, because they’re some of my favourite songs, and Elsa and Max are awesome, despite everything.)
    Things I liked about NBC:
    1. the costumes. Carrie’s dresses were bad, (her homecoming one makes her look pregnant) but points for putting her in a dirndl a lot. But everyone else’s outfits looked pretty good.
    2. There’s a line before Climb Ev’ry Mountain where the Reverend Mother asks Maria if she likes the Captain. In every other version I’ve seen Maria just says “yes.” Here she says “I like the kindness in his eyes, I like the way he speaks even when he’s stern, I like the way he smiles at little Gretl.” Essentially saying she loves him without saying “I love him.”
    Just go watch ITV Live. It’s so much better.

    i thought it was amazing. yes of course not as amazing as the movie but you can’t really compare the film to a live version. in the film they could redo the scenes multiple times and they actually had like real places and stuff.

      I've since seen the BBC live action production, and it just highlights how bad the NBC one was. Same conditions where they couldn't do retakes, and yet the actors were able to actually act and perform their lines with the nuance the script requires. Not to mention the moments a character interupts another don't sound as artificial as they do in the NBC one.

    I think it’s hard to compare the movie to the staged musical because the script is very different!! I was in a production of sound of music and some of the things you pointed out you can’t blame on anyone other than the script. (Like Maria Praying when she enters the house) now don’t get me wrong there are things they could improve but don’t compare every single thing to the movie. (Also I played Frau Schmidt, shes a very funny character that goes underrated. Same goes for the Barroness)

      There are some things that I have walked back in understanding the separation between stage and film like to kneeling amd praying thing, but I'm still not a fan of the direction of the leads amd how they performed their characters. Not even in comparison with the film, but also as compared with the 2015 BBC production.

    by the way -nobody could replace Julie Andrews-- what everyone fails to realize is this event was based on the broadway show, go on iTunes to see the songlist order. There were songs in the play that didn't appear in the movie-was Underwood the greatest broadway star- no-but they chose her because of her voice and following. I met her before a concert and had her autograph my SOML video. She said it was the hardest thing she'd ever done--I told her I loved it and meant it. You see I'm not the snob some people are and for nbc and carrie to bring broadway into the living room=I was grateful and its ratings were over the top-yes reviews were mixed but I enjoyed it and a couple hundreds of thousands did too

      I didn't mind her voice, but her acting just wasn't there one bit. And I don't mean to imply Julie Andrews can be the only Maria. In fact, the 2015 BBC live production has everything I wanted from NBC's show like competent actimg that showcases the subtleties of the characters. I'm also not bothered by the differing songs either. In fact, the musical version has some of my favourite numbers like "No Way To Stop It"

    I will say that since it was one of the first films I ever saw, I will always have a special place in my heart for 'The Sound of Music', even in spite of how it's often considered saccharine and corny, and even with all the liberties it has taken with the true story (the REAL Captain Von Trapp would use a whistle to summon his children, but he never drilled them like naval cadettes).
    If nothing else, Robert Wise really knew how to make his films visually-appealling-especially at a time when most other musical-film adaptations just consisted of one camera filming characters and their dialogue as if it was all on a stage, instead of varying shots and angles to keep them interesting. It's thanks to his film that the Salzburg region of Austria (as well as similar regions of Europe in general) are popular for tourism. My family and were able to go see similar regions across Switzerland, Germany, and Vienna-and they are just GLORIOUS!
    Of course nobody can fill Julie Andrews' shoes, but everyone on board the film considered Christopher Plummer to be the glue that held the entire cast and crew together-which is really impressive, given that Plummer really DIDN'T want to star in the musical, and would frequently look back on it with great distain. That's really impressive when someone who isn't fond of the material they're given to work with, still manages to shine through and keep audiences invested!
    Fun fact: There plans at one point for Yul Brenner (the film version of 'The King and I') to play the captain.

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The liberties taken with the story don't really factor in for me. It's assumed most "based on a true story" stories are mostly fiction. Plus I watched a short documentary about the real Von Trapps, so I know how much the musical diverts from reality.
      He definitely did a good job of capturing the majesty of the country side and made it look an appealing place to holiday in!
      Regardless of his personal feelings, I'm glad Plummer took the role. No doubt Yul Bryner would've done well, but I'd need to have seen him in more than two roles to judge. He does have subtle charm displayed in his King of Siam and even in his bit as Ramses II in The Ten Commandments, but it's hard to imagine anyone other than Plummer as the Captain.

    • @jacobbelow4136
      @jacobbelow4136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely know that anything 'based on a true story' that isn't a documentary, is going to take creative liberties in some form or another. That's just part of telling an engaging story and having to fill in the gaps that have to be interpreted when no other live-witnesses were there with the subject figure, who is already telling their story from THEIR perspective, and their perspective alone. And it interests me to find out stuff that sounded plausibly true to me turned out to be ficitonalized, and even sometimes the other way around!
      What I think people take most issue with when adapting stories about real figures is the fact that depending on how you depict it, you run the risk of insulting real (sometimes massive groups of) people, unlike adapting a novel or a sequel where your biggest risk is pissing off the fans/creators of the original. 'The King and I', after all, is a great show by itself, but I don't think anyone's going to argue that it does justice to the legacy of King Monkgut or Siamese culture in general. (It's probably not on the levels of insulting as making animated films about the Titanic sinking, but I think that's largely because the animated Titanic movies are just poorly-crafted overall.)

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True true. I love remembering there's animated Titanic movies. I tried to watch the first one Diva reviewed and I legit couldn't sit through it. And I got through the animated King and I!

    • @jacobbelow4136
      @jacobbelow4136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NotAVampyre The animated King and I is one of my least favorite movies of all time, not just because of how stupid it is, but because it cause the estates of Rogers and Hammerstein to ban anymore animated adaptations of their properties. The problem wasn't that it was animated, but because it is filled with so many of the same clichés and tropes that those unfamiliar with animation typically associate with it, it's understandable how one would be led to believe that.
      But of course, all of the animated Titanic movies are DEFINITELY worse!

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to wonder who the audience for an animated R/H musical would be except for theater buffs. I don't mind so much not having anymore animated versions because there's not much you can't already do in film or on stage, especially because the stories are very reality based. Nothing that would require special effects or fantasy elements.

    It seems to me that, particularly in light of your analysis, the performance of The sound of music live was based in large part on mass awareness on the part of those involved of what media resources we already had what opportunity to produce they didn't. Basically, they leaned into the presence of existing material and betrayed a history of consumers building their minds and their expectations buy deliberately phoning their own performance in, and how ugly does that look when applied to a plethora of modern production resources and funding streams?

  • @hunterolaughlin
    @hunterolaughlin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ll say that NBC’s live musicals have definitely come a long way since The Sound of Music Live! that their live musical presentations of The Wiz, Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar in Concert are much better than their first 2. I didn’t see Annie Live! because I was expecting that to be a disaster but I’ve heard it got good ratings so maybe I’ll check it out sometime.
    I’ll give credit to the producers and director of The Sound of Music Live! to be more faithful to the original Broadway musical than the more popular 1965 film adaptation as a way to differentiate itself from the film instead of trying to be a carbon copy *cough* Lion King (2019) *cough* similar to what Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story did to make itself stand well on its own without being too similar to the 1961 film adaptation.

  • @jacobbelow4136
    @jacobbelow4136 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well, there's still 'Into the Woods' live! Granted the American Playhouse recording was all the way back from the 80s, but it still counts, and even as someone who did like the film version, I still think the live show is superior. But as for others like 'The Wiz' live, I'll say that however it turns out, it's very unlikely that it'll be any worse than the Schumacher film adaptation.
    As for others that would lend themselves easily to great live stage performances, I think Diva (of Musical Hell) already had a good selection on her list; she did include 'Once on this Island' on her list, and as of her latest Know the Score, she mentioned that the newly-revised edition will at least be going on tour next year. Even if it doesn't get a live broadcast, at least the tour will be a great way to give it the exposure it deserves.

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really count filmed live performances, otherwise Phantom 2011 might've been listed here. I'm more talking about filmed live for TV like the recent NBC or Fox broadcasts.
      Diva has been a good source for things I need to look up, even if she doesn't like them. For instance, Camelot is one of my favorite shows though she disliked the movie.

    • @jacobbelow4136
      @jacobbelow4136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Diva is one of my favorites, and even I don't agree with her on everything. And always, that's totally okay, because it shows that we're individuals. (I know after all, that you were actually pretty neutral to Schumacher's film version of Phantom, even though she and most other Phantom fans really hated it.)
      Again, I frequently tune into Lindsay Ellis' content, largely because she has talked about (particularly in her Pre-Thanksgiving 2016 video about socializing with families) the importance of trying to understand where others are coming from and being open-minded, even if I not only disagree but really DON'T LIKE hearing some of the things she's said. (In one of her most recent videos, she said that she really hates Prince of Egypt, which is one of my favorite movies of all time; there admittedly is this small part of me that gets rather defensive when I hear someone talking smack about something I personally hold dear, especially if it doesn't have so high a cultural stanz that a little bad-mouthing is not going to hurt its success/reputation).

    • @jacobbelow4136
      @jacobbelow4136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for live-TV broadcasts, I admit that I hardly tune in to those anymore, because I find that they aim more just to please the masses, rather than be innovative. Yes, this is a business, and all businesses need to make a profit. But this is a venue that calls for more creativity than others, and some of NBC's choices seem to be more about playing it safe than doing broadcast shows that people will want to see and talk about (with the exception of more mature-themes shows like 'Rocky Horror Picture', which even then, already has a largely renowned film adaptation).

    Good analysis. I am a lifelong fan(-atic) of the movie, and have seen it 100s of times. It (the movie) is such a masterpiece, it would be hard for any production to top it, but your points are well taken. How could they POSSIBLY not find two, far more compelling lead actors? The Captain! So wooden! and, as you said, basically UNattractive. I have no idea of the answer. I diverge with you on the two songs dumped from the movie (although, of course, two -- "I Have Confidence" & "Something Good" were duly added). You have the von Trapp house where the Captain strictly marches the children, and eschews music and any/all reminders of his late wife . . . then next moment, Max, the Baroness and Georg are doing an up-tempo number on the patio. Er . . . I DON'T THINK SO!! And those songs are both much too "stage-ey" to have been left in the movie -- their purpose, after all, in the stage version, is to give Max and the Baroness time in the musical spotlight. No real other reason. Actually, one could argue "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" is in that same category, but Wise rescued it by including it in the Wedding apotheosis, which, of course, cleverly answered that very question. Yes, there are some high school and local community theater TSOM productions on TH-cam that are not a heck of a lot worse than the TV special: and some, quite a bit better! Thanks for the video! ---Mike

    Such a ridiculous and misleading review. Shows a whole lot of ignorance about so many aspects of the Live production of the musical that its hard even to begin. 6.7k subscribers, really?

      Could you explain? If I'm misunderstanding things, id like to know what they are.

    They had a month to get into character, do the blocking, costumes, casting, sets, and do the dances before they had to do the sound of music live.
    So just back off everyone!!

      Unlike the movie where they had more time to get into character, do the blocking, costumes, casting, sets, and do the dances before the sound of music aired.

      Something you're ignoring though is 1: these shows don't work like high school theater. You don't all practice from scratch with everyone for months. You go into rehearsals knowing your lines and the songs because before that point you practiced with coaches. That's how professional productions run
      2: Broadway and other shows do this all the time and don't consistently turn out like this.
      3: You can point to other NBC live shows that while I dislike for other reasons didn't have these issues and assumably ran on a similar schedule like Peter Pan live and Hairspray.

      Look, we can have a long debate on this but it’s not worth it. Here is what I will say I love the Sound of Music both the old one and new one, and you did make valid points. But nothing you or anyone else can say about this movie will ever change how I feel about it.
      Thank you🙂

      I didn't set out to change anyone's opinion, and I'm sorry if it came out this way. It was not my goal for this. All I set out to do in this video is explain why I don't like this version.
