I knew of the movie but hadn't really seen it. I did know that My Favorite Things was from the musical which John Coltrane one of my all time personal musical hero's performed and had an album of the same name back in 1961. Many of my friends said I should watch it, but still wasn't convinced as it wasn't my thing and I'm heavily into avant garde jazz🎶🎺🎷 . After watching your review...and the fact that there is nothing else to do during lockdown...I took your advice and saw it 3 days ago. LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!! yes it is old, and its a musical, and at times it is a bit cringe worthy like when Rolf kissed Lisle and she screamed weeeeee....but like you said it so uplifting!!! It's refreshing!! ...different to the movies of today...I can't explain it, but I just love it. And the songs are so catchy. I actually didn't realize that Do Ray Mi was from the musical!! I had heard of the song before...but didn't put 2 and 2 together!. The scenery is awesome and the cinematography fantastic as well as the actors...its just so well put together! They don't make movies like this anymore. Its also opened my ears to other genre's of music that I never thought I would like ...the scene at the beginning of the movie where the sisters are singing during prayers is heavenly. Thanks Brandon for the review and for opening my eyes and ears to other things .👍👌👏...a change is always good! PS: apologies for the novel....I'm humming 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria' as I type this right now LOL 😊😝🤪

this is one of my favourite movies ever, definitely my favourite musical. The first time I watched it, I think, I was 6/7 years old and it was due to the dance school I used to go to at the time and at the end of the year festival the theme was musicals and my class got the sound of music so we watched bits of it during class and then my mum bought the dvd because I wanted to actually watch the movie. its such a joyful movie

Richard Rodgers, composer, & Oscar Hammerstein, lyricist, wrote all the beautiful & joyful songs in “The Sound of Music”, which was originally shown on Broadway as a stage musical, starring Mary Martin, which later turned into a movie directed by Robert Wise. The movie won 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It became the highest grossing film in 1965-1966, surpassing “Gone With the Wind”. As many Broadway stage musicals turned into motion pictures, the location and scenery of Salzburg, Austria in “The Sound of Music” is breathtaking and unforgettable. And of course, the soprano singing voice of Julie Andrews and the persona of her character Maria compares to none. The 7 children of different ages are so appealing and adorable. The late Christopher Plummer, who just passed last month at age 91, is the handsome Captain Von Trapp whom Maria falls in love with and reunites the children back into his heart. This movie musical is greatly appreciated today, as they don’t create musical films anymore and the magical talents of Rodgers & Hammerstein will never be surpassed. 💗🌷⛰👒🎵🎀💧🎻⛰📽💛

if you are a theater goer it happens once in a very long while that you sit down and, before the curtain even rises, there is a palpable feeling something special is about happen - and it does, everything works, from the casting to the production and there is an inevitability to the appreciative roar from the audience as the curtain falls, creating an experience that will resonate with the viewer forever. And in "Sound of Music" that experience is replicated on screen from the stunning opening aerial shot sweeping into the welcoming arms of the magnificent Julie Andrews, to the glorious finale this film is truly perfection personified. As long as there are eyes to see and ears to listen it will live, from generation to generation. Words cannot fully do justice to this magnificent, cinematic masterpiece. Thank you for doing so with such sincere passion in this wonderful review. Michael - South Africa.

The first movie I remember seeing in a theater. It was the 1965 Re-release. It was an event. My mother cried during Climb Every Mountain. I didn't understand until many years later. IMO, possibly the best single film moment ever: In the Gazebo as Maria and Capt Von Trapp are beating about the bush concerning the end of his engagement. He says "You can't marry someone" his head spins around and Maria and the Capt are nose to nose and he says" when you're in love with someone else." BAM! Watch it, really, tell me I am wrong. This is then followed by "Something Good." a real show stopper of a tune. Thanks for the great review.

ahh if you go to Austria you should definitely try the sound of music tour if you can! I have wanted to go for a while and it would be interesting to hear what you think about it! Overall though, I love this review and as this is one of my favorite movies of all time, I agree with everything you have to say, it's all so beautiful and deserves every ounce of praise it gets!

Salzberg is beautiful little town. The Sound Of Music tour is a laugh but worth it to see the locations. The city is truly like you see in the film.

TSOM has always been my favorite as well. The songs, storyline, Salzburg Austria, what’s not to like.

Very well said. I agree with you on all aspects and it would be so much fun to see you going to Salzburg. I only live 1,5 hours away from it in Bavaria. It is a really beautiful city and it surprisingly looks quite the same compared to the year when the movie was made. I also think that the movie somehow still looks kind of modern from a technical point of view. I am always surprised when you think that it was made in the sixties.

Just rewatched it a week ago and it’s such a great story. Often times in musicals, there’s only one or two good songs but this movie has great song after great song. I agree that it’s a perfect movie.

This is my favorite musical I grew up watching it at least once a year and I never grew tired of it. The acting is superb the cinematography is gorgeous and the music is just amazing. I think that edelweiss is my favorite song from this movie.

Saw it today for the first time at the age of 29. Dude you couldn't've used better words to describe how I feel right now. I think this ranks now at the first place on my favourite musicals list alongside with Jesus Christ Superstar (they're too different in tone and themes, I cannot place one over another).

I haven't seen the Sound of music in what feels like almost a decade (I think) and im so frustrated it took so long for me to watch it again maybe it was because of the cheesness in it, but with a guy whose been going through some stressful things this is exactly what i needed LOVE IT :)

Watched this for the first time a while back. Really really liked it. While I found a lot of similarities to Mary Poppins, it was intriguing enough for me, love that it was more of a period piece. Glad I decided to give it a view

They did :( it wasn't up to par. They ruined captain von trap and made him 10x less likeable. Maria was robbed of her zaniness as well

I had never seen it before at age 54 and it popped up on Disney + so I thought I'd check it out. I thought it was cool that I knew every song, they are just that ubiquitous. As I'm not a fan of musicals, this made the movie more enjoyable because I thought it was cool to see the context of these songs that were part of my childhood. I think the only failure for me was that while I sensed a rapport with the children not so much with the captain and Maria and their affinity turned on a dime. I'm glad they didn't stick super close to the Von Trap personal story, for example fleeing the Nazis over the Swiss alps is much more exciting than just taking a train to Italy. I'd also add that as a teenager I actually went to Salzburg, so it was cool that it was the setting of the movie.

What worked for you here that may have not somewhere else?
It's not your everyday cliche musical. The touch of history and the detail attached to building up to the story of the NAZI taking over Austria took me. It is a beautiful work of art and the script is phenomenal. I would not have wanted it any other way. I was glued to the screen from the beginning to the end. The songs were amazingly choreographed because they each held a deeper meaning that added to the general telling of the story. Best part is that there was no parroting in the script which I find most annoying in musicals.
@@BrandoCritic Another thing I found most fascinating is that the beginning of the movie, we see the mountains and the border between Austria and Switzerland but you only realise this at the end of the movie when it shows us the exact same view as the Von Trapp family is escaping.

This can be a tough sell for modern viewers, who are just not accustomed to musicals of this era. This was a mid sixties movie based on a late fifties Broadway show by Rogers and Hammerstein. It can be bit saccharine and old school for 2021 tastes. Its the direction, cinematography of Robert Wise and of course the Andrews performance that keeps this fresh.

It can be a tough sell for modern viewers because they've grown accustomed to watching shit movies and wouldn't know a great movie if they saw one. That being said The Sound of Music will always find an audience because it's just a great movie.

You should definitely go to Salzburg. First of all, it is beautiful. And the people are warm and friendly. If you don't mind "touristy" thingds, there are "Sound of Music" tours. You can actually go places like the Abbey and Mirabell Gardens. If you want mini road trips, you can visit the church where Maria gets married and the hilltop where the opening number was filmed. And don't forget - food! Schnitzel und strudel!
Also, I'm glad you mentioned how the film looks. In 1965, "Dr. Zhivago" took the Best Cinematography Oscar, but for me, "SofM" is better shot. Composition, shot angles, framing, subtleties, color saturation and combination. It really is the better film in that category.

Great movie!
I have been watching and reading every interview and documentary about TSOM and it all points to Christopher Plummer and his "daughter" Lisle had an affair while Plummer disliked the movie, the filming, the stay in Austria, the children, and Julie Andrews. They don't get along and you can still see it, but the movie got so big that they have spent 55 years talking about it together, going to reunions, anniversaries, etc.

I just watched this movie for the first time. Two things that I didn’t like, especially considering how long it is: they keep singing the same handful of songs over and over. As if they couldn’t afford to write some more.
And any inter-personal conflict is solved far too quickly. Strict father who mourns over how wife‘s death? Let the kids sing a song and all is forgotten. „Sorry I‘m not going to marry you after all.“ - „Oh well I wasn’t that into you anyway. OK, bye“.
I do agree that it looks good though.
I think they definitely had a large variety of songs, so much so that the budget definitely doesn’t need to be brought into question. And while sure, Captain Von Trap had a change of heart with his kids early on, but there is still so much other conflict that happens throughout the movie. The captain falling in love with Maria for one and out of love with the Baroness. And Maria is our main character, and she struggles with her identity throughout the entire thing. Should she stay at the Abbey, be with the Captain and the kids. And then there is the Nazi-angle. What’s best for the children and the new relationship. So I would say that there is plenty of conflict throughout.

You stated in your review that The Lonely Goatherd had no purpose in the film and in a way your right. In the stage show My Favorite Things is a duet between Mother Abbess and Maria to soften the blow before Mother tells Maria she is to go to the Von Trapp home as governess. Lonely Goatherd is used during the thunder storm so in the stage version the song had a definate purpose to calm the children. However even with no purpose the song catches children while watching the movie now due to those amazing marionettes.
Yes Michael! I meant in stating that it doesn't "show us how a character is feeling" like many of the other songs, but it's still a ton of fun!
@@BrandoCritic I guess what I was trying to convey is that in the stage show that song was used to calm the children during the storm. It had a purpose that movie chose to ignore. I also prefer the stage shows use of My Favorite Things too. There were actually songs cut from the stage show between the baroness and the Captain that would have helped drive the story but those were cut too. Don't get me wrong I love the film version of SoM but I think I like the stage version a little better.
Hi. Christopher Plumber hated this movie and called it the Sound of Mucus. When the movie was in theatres one manager wanted to sell a lot of tickets. He altered the very long film by removing the musical numbers.

The first act of the movie is a nice sing a long musical with great performances and timeless songs, the second act is straight from Tyler Perry’s collection of love stories, and the the third act is a WWII flee from the Nazi film. The movie’s ending is nowhere near the same place it started 😂

THE SOUND OF MUSIC was the second film I was taken to see (the first was MARY POPPINS). I was only 4 years old (younger than the youngest Von Trapp!) but though I've seen it many (MANY) times since then, there are still moments I remember vividly from that first screening (in 1965!): the nuns walking towards the camera during their morning hymns; Maria going into the ballroom when she first arrives at the Von Trapp villa only to be interrupted by the Captain as he slams the door open; and most of all the "Do-Re-Mi" sequence - particularly the beginning leading up to the song... something about the mountainside location inspired awe (especially on a big screen when I'd only seen one other movie).

While I agree the movie is amazing…after watching it once or twice, you arent going to remember the kids names other than liesl and gretl. The children are there but as a collective. You only know all the kids names because youve seen it a lot which is why you remember. Just a bit of constructive criticism.

Literally everything that you said about this movie, flip it and say the exact opposite and that's how i felt about this movie when i watched it.
I don't even know where to begin with this film.
First off, I am not into musicals at all so I was screwed right off the bat.
I guess we can begin with the cinematography. The film is very beautifully shot but it is so beautiful that it back fires and works against the goal to achieve a cinematic look. Every single shot in this film is perfect. Every frame is perfect. Everything looks great. These may sound like compliments but the feelings I have toward that perfection is the complete opposite of would normally be the feeling for something that is perfect. Everything looks too perfect, so much so that it looks so artificial. Like an oil painting from the reconnaissance, everything is so saturated. There are no shadows or dark shades and only time we see any depth is during night time shots when characters become silhouettes.
Moving onto the length of the film. Clocking in at nearly 3 hours long, this film does not feel like 3 hours long... It felt like SIX! Good lord does this film DRAAAAGGG. Especially the last half hour that easily could've been shaved off and it would have no impact on the film. The film could have easily ended with the wedding and it would have been fine but the whole sub plot about the Nazi's recruiting George in the Navy is just useless. Either way the film ends in a happy ending so why not just end it at the wedding without the nonsensical extra half hour of torture.
Because of the artificial look of the film, the characters fall victim to this as well. I didn't think I was watching real people but rather felt like I was watching a fantasy and romantic novel on the screen. The characters honestly show no true human characteristics. Maria is really the only one that has any real emotion and she is the most exaggerated character out of all of them! She is just that perfect protagonist without any flaws which also goes through little to no development from start to finish. Her only growth is that she falls for George and he for her. Not much happens in the film which is why the nearly three hour long run time is very frustrating. If there were things unfolding as we watched or more locations with more characters etc then I would understand why the film is long but it isn't! The seven kids are only there to be the catalyst for the romance that grows between Maria and George. Otherwise they are useless. They serve no other purpose so there being seven of them isn't that important. By the third act I just wanted this film to end because of who bored I was.
This film didn't resonate with me at all nor could I relate to it even a little. Again, I am not a fan of musicals at all and I have only see a handful in my life so I am not surprised I didn't enjoy this movie but I wasn't expecting to dislike it this much. I felt nothing going into this movie and felt nothing coming out of it. A real disappointment even though I should not be surprised since every single pre 70s movie I have ever seen has yet to amaze me considering how much that era is cradled cherished and held on a pedestal.

Sorry the second half didn’t work for you with the escaping Nazi subplot. It did for me. If you took out the entire Nazi subplot, I don’t think it would have made the Captain a very interesting character. He is bitter because of his wife dying and then suddenly, he falls back in love with Maria because she teaches his kids about the sound of music. In my eyes, the nazi subplot rounded out much of his character and made his struggle and his transformation all the more powerful. But, if it didn’t work for you, then that’s too bad.
As for the characters feeling part of a fantasy or a romantic novel, I think that is what the film was going for. It is a musical after all. It’s not very realistic in the first place to have characters singing and dancing out of nowhere.
Also, it is a shame that NO pre 70s movie has yet to amaze you. Maybe that has shaded your judgement? But who knows, I can’t speak for why this didn’t work for you. I can only speak to how it worked for me. Again, it’s a shame that you didn’t like this movie
@@BrandoCritic yeah, this film was assigned to me to watch otherwise I wouldn't have watched it because I'm so tired of watching these long movies and constantly being disappointed. I wish film professors would realize movies that didn't come out in their early lives are good too. So many post 60's movies in my opinion are far greater than the first half of the century combined because actors became less robotic and acting as an art became more stylized and mature so well later on. As for musicals, I saw la la land and as much as I dislike that movie for its own reasons, even that seemed a little more realistic than this film and I'm willing to bet old timey boomer critics would put this film over that lol. I Also wanna apologize if I came off as too harsh. Idk i'm a film student and I get passionate about these things sometimes. Especially when and if a film sparks great emotion in me. whether that emotion be anger or love.
Stan I understand. I have a film degree and did the film school grind. But I caution you not to put your opinion of movies entirely on when they came out, because in 50 years from now, who knows what audiences and film students then will think of films now. Films will always evolve, just look at the 007 franchise
