  • In this video we explain the details of the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. In the first part, we will focus on the more northern areas that were affected earlier. These are the islands of Koh Similian, Surin islands, Phuket island and the Khao-Lak resort, where the tsunami struck really devastatingly. You can again look forward to explanatory maps and graphics so that you have all the information available in important contexts. The video is exclusively educational and documentary in nature. That's why you won't find purposeful and explicit shots of destruction here. Thank you for watching, liking and subscribing to our channel.

    I am a local Phuket people,at that time I was pregnant for 8 months.I worked at the airport and very lucky that sea water just come up not hit like other beaches. So sad for Thai and tourists who lost their life and also their families or friends. It was the tough time for everyone.

    My ex Thai wife was living with me in the UK at the time. Before this, she was constantly having dreams about water coming in from the sea and we had to get to the top of a mountain to escape it. She never had dreams like this before and a couple of weeks later, the tsunami happened.
    Really crazy stuff!

    True story, I was travelling with mates and was supposed to be in Phi Phi on the morning of the Tsumani. We got so drunk in Koh Phangan on Christmas Day, we missed our early morning flight to Phi Phi. Mid afternoon I went down to get some food and saw everyone standing around the TV's, and after checking my phone (old Nokia) I had like 30 missed calls from family to see if we were ok. Crazy to think we would have been on Phi Phi if it wasn't for alcohol!!!

Don't take anything valuable out, watch your drinks from being spiked, don't go into the sea as its full of broken bottles and don't wear flip flops as your feet will get cut up. Undercover Police are everywhere, and will arrest you even if smoking a joint as they make cash fining people. Just be careful and have a great time:-)

    I was with my two friends Marlene and her husband Dimitri on a South African beach the same day and i saw the waters recede and some whirlpool type activity...i immediately told them to get out of the beach since i knew something was askance,having watched nat geo Tsunami documentaries..they laughed at me ,Marlene telling me that i was gone nuts,but i bolted to my car and drove off...Fortunately they didn't experience any big Tsunami effects..the next day i was shocked to see what had happened in affected countries.

      You behaved in an exemplary manner. Although South Africa was hit by smaller waves, they still killed 2 surfers who were pulled into the depths by the waves. Even in the case of the smallest tsunamis, it is dangerous to move near the sea. Plus, you never know how big the wave will end up being. All the best for the new year.

    I found out about this from a friend who was in Phuket. He rang his mum, who rang his brother who was staying with us. I have had tsunami/tidal wave dreams since I was a child. My sister and her family were travelling in Thailand at the time, last known to be staying in a hut with stilts on the beach! Luckily they were not affected as they weren't on the beach that night, but the other side of Thailand. But her husband had received a Christmas present book on how to survive 50 disasters. Guess which disaster they had read about on Christmas night? Tsunami 🌊🌊

    My parents and I were booked to stay at a hotel in Khao Lak over Christmas 2004 period, having already been before in April of that year. My mum was in the travel industry, so I was incredibly lucky to visit such places so young. That year we decided last minute to cancel the holiday just a week or so before we were due to leave, as money was a bit tight around the house. Waking up on boxing day to the terrible news - I've never been so grateful to be poor in all my life. I don't think there was a single survivor from the hotel we were booked to go back to. So incredibly sad.

    Hello. My name is naiful. I from Indonesian banda aceh
    Saya salah satu korban selamat tsunami 😅

    I have cctv footage from Phuket. at first, the cctv catches the waves wash ashore and it doesn't really knock anything down besides some beach chairs, but the water current suddenly changed and the water suddenly rose and you can see 2 tourists get swept away beneath the cctv camera. It's a reminder that just because you can't see a wave doesn't mean it can't kill you.

    Wait so it travels faster in deeper water? How does that work?

    • @TOPTopics
      @TOPTopics  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I simplify it: The movement of the raised water column in the depths is not subject to friction against the bottom. Therefore, a tsunami in deep water has a minimum height of about a few feet above the surface at most. That is why the tsunami moves very fast. When it approaches land and shoals, this water column is pushed up by friction against the shallow bottom, but at the same time it is also braked by friction against the bottom. The tsunami suddenly forms in height and slows its speed.
