  • In the second part of our series on the tsunami in Thailand, we look at the path of the tsunami in the South Andaman Sea. The tsunami here has already weakened considerably, but not enough to become harmless. In this area, it particularly affected the islands of Koh-Phi Phi and Koh-Lanta, which were greatly devastated. On Phi-Phi Island, due to diffraction, the wave achieved significant amplification, which brought significant damage to these islands. Learn more in the video. The video is intended for educational purposes and therefore you will not find explicit and purposeful footage of the destruction here. Thank you for like and subscribing to our channel.

    I was on koh lanta beach when the first wave struck. At the 3rd wave I started running. With help of Thai locals made it to the high ground. Didn't understand the whole story till we got back to Bangkok. Terrifying.

    Four Canadian's were lost to the tsunami at Khao Lak, one of them was my 32 yearold nephew. We went to see where he died in 2008 and are going to spend February 2023 in Khao Lak. He considered it the most beautiful part of the world he'd ever seen, we agree.

    They were still felt here where I live, which is in Luderitz, Namibia. If you look at a map of the area, you can see a large bay next to the town, that's where it was felt the most. The bay near the entrance is about 70 meters deep, and the whole bay is 10 kilometers long and about 2 kilometers wide on average. Near the entrance the wave was about 50 centimeters high, but when it reached the lower end it was about 1 meter high, doesn't sound like a lot but still. When it reached the lower end of the bay it flowed 2 kilometers from the coast, over the salt pan that extends that distance from the beach. When it reached the road which passes the outer edge of the pan, it went another 100 meters past it.

      Was this the Tsunami from 2004, Or a different one, because the tsunami from 2004 affected the Indian Ocean, Namibia which is on the Atlantic ocean would not have been affected

    • @sigisoltau6073
      @sigisoltau6073 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WeMayNeverKnow_2005 Actually it was the 2004 Asia tsunami. And yes it did reach us as well. There's an animation on TH-cam that shows how far it spread. Yes, the tsunami did affect the Indian Ocean, but the waves spread into every ocean, some areas like where I live still saw some waves, if they lived along a long deep bay like we do. That bay is 10 kilometers long, about 3 kilometers wide and up to 70 meters deep near the entrance. Those features not only forced a lot of water into it, but also forced it to increase in height dramatically.

      If you watched the other video's about tsunami's from this channel. You would know you don't stand a chance in any kind of tree located on the coast. The height of the waves is depended on natural barriers for example. So you might get lucky in a tree....but it's a gamble.

      Sorry for the essay I’m just really interested in tsunamis but If the ground starts shaking near the beach, a landslide, or volcano, that is a sign that a tsunami is coming. Move as high up you can. If you have enough time to, get you r family, pets, important things and move as far inland as possible because that is you best bet of survival. Tsunamis can travel for miles so you have to be quick. While still far back, tsunamis can travel of speeds up to 600 mph and could go faster than a jet. The waves usually start off small and increase in size with time so even though being at the ocean is a lot of fun, don’t try to ride the huge waves because even normal big waves cost people’s life. If your caught in a huge tsunami (which is extremely unlikely since the giant ones are so rare) try to find an object to protect yourself since you will die from getting hit by too many things in the water. If your stuck in one try to latch onto a tree and hold on tight. Tsunamis pull drain back into the water and pull everything with it once it dies down so don’t go back in any time soon. Tsunamis ate practically unstoppable so don’t save your house, save yourself family and others. Tsunamis are very rarely big so I wouldn’t worry too much about them, but be careful if you live in an area prone to tsunamis. I hope you are never caught in a tsunami and have a great day. Sorry again for the essay!

    This one was very good, as ever.
    Videos posted of the waves hitting the Racha Resort that were posted many many years ago, included a comment from the person who posted them saying that someone had managed to alert the staff at the resort, and they had been able to warn people, so the number of deaths wasn't so terrible.
    So I was very sad to here that 250 people died nevertheless. I suppose I had been hoping too much for a good news story on that terrible day.

    The part about Phi Phi Island is not right. As seen in the footage of a swedish couple named Widelius (you use it in your video) the landbridge was first flooded from Tonsai Bay and in less than two minutes hit by the bigger wave from Lodahlum Bay. In their TH-cam-Video you can see it in real time. The flee the flooding from Tonsai Bay into the nearby Cabana Hotel and once they are up in the second floor you can see in the video that the more violent other wave has already arrived from the other side. The same is suggested by other whitnesses like the Austrian Haslinger family. They fleed the wave from the Lodahlum Bay by heading to the other side of the landbrige where they were halfway met by the smaller wave from Tonsai Bay which presented itself as a small but rapid flood. A couple of seconds later they were hit from behind by the bigger wave from Lodahlum bay. Besides that I only know about one more wave from Lodahlum bay having about the same size as the first one. (Haslinger report) This second wave came in about ten to nine minutes later. (Haslinger report) It seems to be the one you show in your video with the pool and the pont cause the place is already devastated before this new wave hits. As far as I know this second wave flushed all the trash in the Tonsai bay. So if there was another wave coming from there it must have been a smaller one
