- In the fourth part of our series on the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, in 2004, we will show the story of Sri Lanka, which was the second most affected country. In the video, you will again find map materials and examples of individual sites with an explanation of what happened there at the time. The video is educational and therefore you will not find explicit shots of destruction in it, most of the shots are illustrative. Thanks for watching, like and subscribing to the channel.
My elder sister was in this train with 3 of her college friends. After seeing what happenes live on tv in Galle we tried to reach them via phones. But all connections were cut out. She called us earlier that morning moments before the train leaves the Fort Railway station to Galle. And that was the last time we heard her voice. We could recover only one of her friend's body under a fallen tree about 400ft off the track. My sister and other two were never found. Almost 20 years without her and it still haunts me to imagine her last moments.
I'm so sorry for you loss. I do pray your family is doing better even though such loss can never be recovered.

I met a guy who lost many family members to this, met him in australia, he was learning to cook and was the nicest young man. Thashara, if you read this, its Sue and Will xxx i think of you often and your family 🌹
Thanks for this. When this happened, I was a little girl of 9 years. Some of my relatives were killed by this disaster. They lived in Matara, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. Still very sad. 😔

Spent four months in Sri Lanka, truly the Jewel in the Indian Ocean, in 1982.
Returned with my wife in February 2024. We toured by bus.
We stopped to view the Memorial at Peraliya and it’s guardian street dog.
Utterly heartbreaking, the losses, particularly in that world’s worst ever train disaster💔.
We passed destroyed houses, still just bare shells some twenty years later as no family member survived to deal with the aftermath.
Sri Lank’s pain received very little attention in the news media here in the UK.
Concentrating their attention elsewhere.

I still remember the day! There was an international cricket match between Sri Lanka and some other country. I was watching the match when the breaking news appeared on the TV. I remember at first I thought it was just a small wave as most Sri Lankans including me had never heard about tsunami. After we got to know the things happened the entire nation was in a cry😢😢. Still I can't think about the feeling.😢😢

I was on the Island of Sumatra in July 2005 on a reconstruction mission. I can attest to the height of the waves about an hrs drive south of Bandeh Aceh being about 40 ft tall. One of the members got a photo of a mattress in the top of a palm tree. Religion and politics will prevent improvements to prevent this from happening again. Case in point, most roads run parallel with the coast. The main coast road sank over 6 ft. I have pics from the helicopter showing palm trees in several feet of ocean water several feet from the shore and the road was seaward of that. The secondary road was washed out in several areas and there are few roads running into the mountains because there is nowhere for them to go.
They use barb wire for reinforcing concrete walls instead of re bar which sits rusting in a pile on the ground.
They refuse to use wood for construction even though sat that time there was lots of it available.
All this van be backed up by 187 pics and 45 minutes of vid.
They will never learn.

I've been reading and watching about 2004 tsunami but never heard of Colombo Train tragedy until I watched this clip. My God! Poor-poor souls. May they all rest in paradise!
I went to the Tsunami Museum in Hikkaduwa last year and it was heartbreaking. I feel for all the families who lost loved ones.
That's one thing my parents always talked about, if you ever saw the ocean receding run and run fast as you can and head for the hills
It doesn't always recede so much as you'll notice
We were in Bali in 2011 and the water receded one day about 10-15m but we were told it happens once a month. No tsunami.
The house I grew up in was 60 ft from the Pacific Ocean. I learned that rule when I was 3. A tsunami was always my worst nightmare.
For those who live there and see the ocean everyday / night, any changes to the ocean is an alarm. But for tourists who really dont know how the ocean behaves, no way of understanding all this. They have to depend on what the locals tell them.
Doesn't have to recede, depending on the phase of the wave it can grow.

We visited Sri Lanka in 2017, we stayed in a resort in Bentota where many died, in Galle there were buildings that still had feint water marks on the outside showing how high it got, scary stuff!

The train had at least 2,000 peoples and out of 2,000 at least 900 people went missing never founds .

My parents and I were driving along the coast to galle when we saw people looking at the ocean. So we asked what was happening and they said the sea was receding. We didn’t know what that meant exactly so we stood and watched for a while too. Not even 5 mins after we got into the car and started driving away, a massive wave hit just a few meters ahead of us. It was chaos.
I still find stories like that almost impossible to conceive. I'm 63 years old & live in a desert yet if anyone ever told me water was receding....is run for high ground. How can anyone on an island not know this?
@@nickisnyder3450 at that time word tsunami was unknown . Few experts news buffs knew it . But now even a child know about tsunami . That was after boxing day tsunami . There was wall to wall coverage for months rivalling 9 eleven coverage.

people if you see the tide suddenly retreating it is your queue to start running faster than you ever have towards high grounds... do not start exploring the sea floor it will be the last thing you do.

I was studying in twelfth grade those days. We were celebrating Christmas last night .I'm shocked to see the morning paper. I live in Kerala. It is about 100 km from Kanyakumari, but the tsunami reached Kerala as well. Tributes to all who died in the tsunami , unforgettable😯.&it's a Good video

As a 7 year old, I read a book about tsunami's. The retraction of seawater would be enough to 'ring' alarm and start running for higher grounds with my survival kit.
My son went to Crete in Greece. Before he left I studied the terrain, klimate, vegetation, rivers, slopes, ...
Maybe a flood could occur, maybe a (bush)fire could occur, ... Where should he go and the telnr from the Belgian ambassy was in his phone and written on laminated paper.
He also had a small baggy with a firestick, aluminium blanket, disinfection, condoms (to hold drinkingwater and a multitool knife.
Very basic but might be life saving.

I recall this because the company I work for has major manufacturing in Sri Lanka. Such a horrible tragedy that so many know nothing about.
The ocean's a powerful force. I live on the west coast of Michigan. Five miles from Muskegon Lake & seven miles from Lake Michigan. As an American Red Cross volunteer, I've responded ded to many floodings. I don't think anything can prepare you for a tsunami, though. How terrifying!

Sure, it's comforting for us to think that bad things only happen to others because they didn't make the right choices, but reality is much harder to come to terms with.

Love this narrator's voice. Refreshing to hear a woman tell the tale. The number of people killed by these tsunamis is horrible enough, but even more awful is the way most of them died, being crushed and violently pummeled by heavy debris which essentially beat them to death as they were also drowning. I can only try to imagine the terror and pain experienced by the victims.

You’d think the locals would know that receding water on the beach means it’s time to get out of there.
I’ve know about that since high school and I don’t even live in an area prone to tsunamis.
Last one to hit here was 8,200 years ago, but it was around 80ft in height and got just over 10 miles inland.
That was due to a massive land slide and there was nobody living in this area at the time.
Things were really different back in 2004. There was limited awareness about the warning signs of tsunamis. After this tragedy it is common knowledge and is now taught in schools but back then people just didn't know. Lots of people had never even
heard of tsunamis.

I went to school in the 80s.
I was in primary 5 when we learned about Tsunamis, so they were 100% teaching this in schools way before 2004.
Rapidly receding water lines on a beach has been known as a sign of a tsunami for hundreds of years.
We didn’t just learn about it in 2004.
We did but maybe people without an education didn’t 🙄
@@Acheron666 Yeah but did you get educated in Sri Lanka??? At that time, people hadn't even heard of the word. They were never taught the warning signs, because that was foreign knowledge to them. It was never taught in schools back then. My mom only knew about them because she had read books about it.

Among many destructions in 2004 tsunami in Banda Aceh, there was 1 particular village where the villagers were all saved because of the century old folklore that they have about Smong, the catastrophic giant waves. It said:
"Hear this story. One day in the past, our village sinks. Starting with an earthquake. Then followed by rising waves, higher than a tree. Watch the sea after the earthquake. When the water recedes, Smong follows. When suddenly buffalo fled from the shores, don't take fish from the beach. Don't wait a second; just run for your life to the higher place."
After further research it was revealed that this folklore was made by the tsunami survivors from this village around 1907, because at that time this village was one of the villages worst hit by the tsunami, many died. And in 2004 the village sank again, but the villagers were saved.

This documentary is very simple but well told and very, informative, the narrator's really makes you feel the gloomy aftermath of this natural calamity. What happened to the train is really sad and tragic.

It is nice to learn surprise tragedies which our most dependable Mother Nature could have for us. No one can stop Her from ending the lives of 1000s in a minute. We all must prepare ourselves for similar disasters no matter where we are! Mother Nature always has a good reason to do so.

@@fuckbeak224 Probably not her mother tongue. Perfection is non-existent when it comes to languages, we all make mistakes and errors no matter whether we speak properly and with a smooth-talking way. It takes a lot of practice and time to make a second language come more naturally to someone.

Il problema sono certe immagini, spesso fuorvianti. Lo tsunami non è un'onda gigantesca, bensì un enorme spostamento d'acqua, miliardi di tonnellate che vengono avanti inesorabilmente. Certo, si creano anche onde ma fosse solo un'onda, due o tre, per quanto alte possano essere (vedere Nazareth, dove arrivano onde di 30 metri) dopo tot metri esaurirebbero la loro potenza. Lo tsunami è come se dall'altra parte ci fosse un'enorme "pressa" che spinge l'Oceano avanti, più vicina all'esondazione di un fiume che ad una mareggiata.
I lost my grandfather during this tsunami. He wasn't there in the waves he was here in the states he just died during the tsunami.

I was in Sri Lanka a few months before the tsunami. I was also on the east coast in Arugam bay. for some time after coming home I was still in contact with the locals (I sent them some money), but after the tsunami there was no word from them. they probably all died, because their homes were right on the coast. they were fishermens...😢
Is there anyone survived from Arugam bay ? maybe he can tell me whats happened with this poore people.
