Scotty just sees cars as a form of transport and I agree. When I was younger I always loved the high performance expensive vehicles, but today I wouldn't buy one even if I could. I'm proud to drive around in a 16 year old Toyota Corolla knowing it was cheap and is reliable.

I have a 2017 Mazda 3 that I got brand new for fuel efficiency but never enjoyed driving it because it had all these electronics and bells and whistles and I could never take it off road or it was useless in the snow so I gave it to my wife who loves it. I looked around and got a fairly cheap 98 4runner 4wd with 253,000 miles as a beater. Best car I've ever owned. It taught me how to change oil and diff and transfer case fluid and coolant, spark plugs, cleaning the Maf and iac and gaskets etc while buying tools to fix it. Its a joy to drive and made me want to educate myself about cars and engines and codes and how the car works. It keeps me home and out of trouble. Something I wouldn't have experienced with the fairly new Mazda. The car gave me confidence in doing mechanical work and made me think and sharpen my logical thinking. The insurance i pay for it is $80. The "beater" 4runner did more for me in terms of education and gives me a hobby and a feeling of accomplishment with any little thing i fix as well as a respite from the daily grind at the clinic i work at. I'd say the rewards are a thousand times greater than the measly cash I put into it.

Tony Montana I used to work in the business. if someone wanted a quote to replace the roof, it is not necessary to get up there and measure anymore. eagle view and gaf360 have programs that will calculate the square footage. now if you had questions about say, a leak or if you suspect bad plywood or any other concerns about it. he should have. not sure why you need a roof. if it's due to age or storm damage. either way, it is not 100% necessary to get up there as long as he explains the areas that might need attention after the shingles are stripped off exposing the plywood. like where the chimney meets the roof of any of the pipes or skylights. those areas are most common to have rotten wood issues.
what exactly were you looking for finding out if he got on your roof?
and to be clear I got out of that industry due to shoddy work by almost every sub contractor I came across and just general dishonesty from just about everyone. and total disregard for people's property. it was much different 20 years ago. now, no one seems to care about quality or keeping their word.

I have a 1994 Ranger that I've owned for 20 years. It's my "beater car", and I don't plan to get rid of it until there's a REALLY GOOD REASON. It's worth more to me than anyone will pay for it, and I think that's the underlying message of Scotty's video. A beater car that can get you all over the place and not cost you a lot of money is worth more to you than it is to others.

I had a '92 ranger and, through the decades, countless people rang my doorbell trying to buy it...really became annoying. On 4 occasions, windows were broken out trying to steal it (loosened the ignition w screwdrivers, but they all failed). Right before i finally did sell (had 200k miles), some asshole(s) stole the pickup bed door off it (if you still own a ranger, hide a wi-fi tracking device in the pickup bed door, find the thieves and kill them).

    • @bap7929

Rangers are good trucks, I bought my 03 edge as a beater (dents, scratches, clear coat peeling, etc) with 147,000 miles for $2.7k. I liked the truck so much I pretty much restored it w/body work, new paint job, transmission(it started to slip), new suspension, etc. only thing untouched is the motor. I probably put in what I paid for it but I always wanted an edge model. It now has 180,000 miles and still runs like a champ. I don’t ever plan on selling it, especially since these so called “new rangers” are over priced and have an excessive amount of unnecessary features.

I'm 24 and when I was in college, I bought a 1997 Grand Marquis with 70k miles (in 2015). I kept it for 3 years and put 30k miles on it. Never had any real issues with it except for an occasional emissions notification through the check engine light and the climate control taking a slow death. But the engine in it ran just fine. I moved that car from Connecticut to Delaware and when I got my first job, I was commuting 91 miles per day. I learned a lot from owning it, from how to do some repairs and diagnostics to, honestly, becoming a safer driver (I didn't want the thing to die on me when I had to commute so far).
Once I moved closer to work (about 2 miles round trip now), I got a better car, a 2009 Camry with 90k miles. It definitely handles better and I can tell it's in much better shape overall, but that Grand Marquis definitely taught me some lessons about taking care of my "new" Camry.

There’s no reason to spend a lot on a car. For example, I bought a 98 Honda Civic for $1800 several years ago. I’ve put 100k miles on it and it hasn’t broke yet. Put tires and brakes on it but that’s it. Oh, fixed a leak in the AC too. I can sell the car for $2000 right now. It’s like you never really spend money on them.
