The Cure For The European CUV? | 2020 Lincoln Corsair

  • Like the MKC before it, the Corsair marches to a different drummer than the X3 and GLC and I'm not just talking about which wheels are doing the motivation. The Corsair is the small luxury crossover for you if you're looking for something a little softer and more comfortable. In a sea of BMW X3 imitations this isn't just unusual, it's refreshing.

Alex makes a great point about Lincoln prioritizing ride and comfort over handling. I think that was a really smart choice for this segment and I agree that wayyyyyyy too many compact crossovers are trying to be the next X3. Kudos to Lincoln for charting their own course. I love the comfort-focused mission of the Corsair and I would honestly take this over a GLC300. Few other people might say that but that’s just me personally.

Kumar Galhotra is more of a practical guy. He always prefers what works over hyped up things. That said I ve been in this Corsair I ve a few complaints. Those gloss black plastics are nasty n collecting dust. The gloss metallic sorrounds shine like crazy under sunlight. They cud ve added a satin metallic finish which wud add more premium feel while not shining off like the current application. The fit and finish still is not as good as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus. The panel gaps are not consistent. Some shut lines are not perfectly aligned like in German and Japanese competition.
But even with these flaws the Lincoln felt extremely compelling compared with competition, specially Cadillacs and Acuras and Infinity etc felt like instant failures but Merc, Audi, BMW. LEXUS still can put up a smart fight against Lincoln.

Alex, I am with you on comfort over handling. I am not sure if it is people that don't want to get real about how they really drive their cars most of the time and manufacturers just follow the market, or car companies set the tone and people follow. I have done 0-60 of 2.6 Seconds and fast Canyon carving but my fondest driving memories are from my plush quiet oldsmobile. I take floaty suspension with meaty tires over those booty-buster large wheels any day (if I can find them on a car that is not 20 years old).

I'd agree that the Aviator is an appealing midsize CUV, especially compared to one of top trims (ST or Platinum) of the Explorer. A mid-trim moderately optioned Aviator (Reserve) has an MSRP around $64,500. Top trim Explorers have MSRP's that near or top $60,000. There's no question in my mind that the Aviator is a far better proposition. Whether the same is true of Lincoln's other CUV's is a more difficult case to make.

The fog season is a season of fog that occurs in some places, because of special meteorological and topographical characteristics, after a rainy period. The fog season is usually based in the cooler months (late autumn, winter and early spring).
An example is found in the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Valley areas of California's Great Central Valley, where a thick ground fog, known as Tule fog, may form, in particular in the months from November through March. In the Tampa Bay area of Florida, the fog season is from December to February. Sydney's fog season is longer, starting from April through to October. Though it's more frequent in June due to more rain.
It is not generally true that fog season in a given area is during Fall or Winter (the cooler months); for example, the Japanese coast of the Pacific Ocean has a dense fog season from May to August. The June Gloom, a cloudy and foggy phenomena, experienced in the southern coast of California occurs in late spring and early summer (May and June).

I am shopping in this segment and it is definitely a tough choice between the corsair hybrid and the GV70. Two very different cars which are the same in that they are immense value propositions, just one will give you features and mileage and the other will give you trim and performance. I'm leaning corsair though because i think it will be better in traffic and parking. As much as I like the auto in and out feature, in a crowded car park, I don't see myself getting out and using the fob to tuck away the genesis, meanwhile one-shotting a tight parrellell in fords excellent autopark is something I will use each and every time.

D H The worst part is that you can equip an Escape Titanium with far better options for less than a base Corsair, which is essentially the same car, so that results in almost no Lincoln sales because let’s face it, the Lincoln brand isn’t attractive on its own to anyone under 60. As you’ve noted, on higher trims, the value proposition just isn’t there compared to Volvo, Audi, and others because underneath it all, it’s still just a Ford Escape really.

Nice vehicle and a great review Alex - thanks for posting it.
I test drove a fully equipped '20 Corsair Reserve 2.3 several months ago. Great looking exterior but a couple of items in the interior were a disappointment for me. The optional 24-way massaging seats were hard and uncomfortable (!) - mainly due to the fact the bottom cushion lacks sufficient cushioning. The standard seats in the Corsair Reserve are actually much more comfortable.
The 2nd disappointing item was the shortage of front passenger seat legroom. If you're a person of average height (or taller) you'll find you can't stretch your legs out properly when sitting in the front passenger seat. My wife (who is 5'8" tall) found the front passenger seat legroom to be unacceptable.
My final gripe was with the infotainment touchscreen - it's too small imo.

I have a fully optioned 2015 MKC 2.3 which I really enjoyed. I purchased a extended service plan and extended warranty plan which gave me a peace of mind. The only drawback is deprecation, which is over 60% in 5 years. It’s not as realizable as a Toyota or Lexus but not worse than other imports.

Alex, how PHEVs competitors from Audi, Mercedes Benz and Volvo to Corsair PHEV be more fuel efficient since they are serial ones while Lincold employ the parallel hybrid which as Toyota's version of RAV4 Prime are the most fuel efficient? Even EPA ratings mirror that.

I've often wondered why in your reviews you never mention (literally) why you wouldn't chose a well equipped low mileage loaded say Mercedes GLC as an alternative to say a new Volvo XC60 or a Corsair? Change the names as you will but a lot of times a person could save 10-20K over the price of new. Really enjoy your reviews and they heavily influenced our decision to get a 2018 530e which we love!

Alex, the 2.0T MKC has 0 to 60 in 7.9 second. This is the same engine and same suv size. The only meaningful difference is the new transmission. Why is the 0 to 60 improved so much?

    • @1989rs500
      @1989rs500 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The old transmission was a 6F series TC AUto.. a stupid old slushbox that was only good at part throttle driving. The new 8 speed AT in AT mods shifts up almost as fast as some DCTs. But when downshifts and manual shifting are considered its still slower than DCTs but again much much better than Fords old 6F150-6F350 transmissions

I can't answer your question about the MPGs being the same. It is a much bigger vehicle -- but it appeals to a different audience anyway. I would buy a Corsair. I don't want an Explorer. For one thing, the interior is bad with way too much plastic, and that's why they're dropping prices next year. Also the AWD Explorers get much lower mileage.

No one makes make a long term 1.5 or 2.0 engine that is turbo charged will last longer than their warranty period. Notice Toyota has stayed away . Except for the Crown ( they will learn .
