Making A Knife Out Of Rebar - Sharp Works

- Today, I’m going to practice forging a knife. I’ll use rebar since it’s a cheap, easily accessible steel. I’m not too concerned about the function of the knife as I am more concerned with furthering my skill and knowledge on making different types of blades. You will see throughout the video that I change direction a few times on this knife. I didn’t really have a plan going in. I originally started to forge out what would have become a spear point blade, but later on I changed my mind. While grinding, I decided to make it a clip point. This knife is not my best work, but I’m happy with the final outcome of this project, even though I wish I had forged more to the shape that I ended up with.

I love your design...my rebar knives need more flair and I'm going to try your design. You've got a great setup except for the anvil base. A base from an oak tree trunk can be cheap or free. 6" lag bolts and the steel's response to your hammer hits will make the effort totally worthwhile. Just my 2 cents. Beautiful knife. 👍

Gorgeous knife👍.Knife making is a terrific way to spend time.It uses a lot of effort but the result will be satisfying.I even spent hundreds on dollars buying equipment for my son to make knives.Great talent you have.Keep it up.I have already subscribed and liked!

Really nice knife I wish I had the skill and tools you have but for now I only have a hammer and a fire bin I made my first sword from a hollow pipe but the steel is too thin
This is my time watching you and I'm hooked. Besides that I was wondering can you consider doing Challenges making knives. Like knives out of metal rod with antler handle or something like that. A Forged in Fire type thing

Awesome knife! glad to see you are still making videos. Just some constructive criticism, in the future I would recommend using some steels with higher carbon content like files, springs, or wrenches. Rebar doesn't get as hard since it has a lower carbon content.

I missed this one. I liked the design you ended up with. Does rebar hold a good edge ?
I heard rebar has different grades. The one sold by me can be hardened and hold an edge fairly well, but it’s not nearly as good as 1095. Rebar makes some good practice knives.
Turned out great!👍🏼💪🏼 It's terrible though to watch the anvil vibrate that much. You would do so much of a better job if it would stand on a solid log in the ground. I think I comented this already on one of the last videos, just wanted to remeber you😃

That’s great to see you have the passion for knife making too. I first started in my early teens with just one file and a hacksaw. And from that, once I got more tools and knowledge, I began to make better quality knives. In the beginning it took me forever to make a single knife, but it was worth it to see myself getting better and faster. I wish you luck in your craft. One of the first things I learned is that you can’t let anyone/anything discourage you, you’ll be surprised what you can make with your own hands.

Try making a switch blade.You definitely have the talent for it.
Thank you for the suggestion. As for a quality anvil, I’m not too sure about. But I can’t tell you to avoid the harbor freight anvil that I’m using. It’s good if it’s the only thing that you can find locally, but it isn’t made from quality steel and will dent whenever you hammer on it. It works if you’re like me and you just want to play around with forging. In the past, I’ve used a 16lb sledge hammer head as my anvil. I have made a few videos using it. I think it worked very well as a beginner anvil. It was just really small.

Good job on your buck! Unfortunately, I never worked with horn or antler before so I don’t know what’s the best tools/methods to use.

Unfortunately as on now, I don’t have a set schedule. I’m trying to upload at least every month or so, but I can never predict when I’ll have enough free time to make and edit a video. Thank you for the support I’m really glad that you enjoy my work. I’m hoping by the end of January to have my next video complete and uploaded.

I think I’m going to forge out a few spikes that will hopefully help hold my anvil to the ground and reduce vibrations. Since I have to bring my anvil in and out of my shed, I can’t put it on a 100lb log so I was thinking of making some sort of wedge or staple that will hopefully lock the base into the ground better. I’ve been waiting for a decent weekend to do this, one that’s not raining or excessively windy, which has been hard to find in the winter.
If weather prevents me from forging, I’ll make a video on another method to force a patina on knives. I filmed it a while ago; it’s just been waiting to be edited.
Is that 3/8 or 1/2 inch size rebar? Looks great!
Thank you! It should be 1/2” rebar. My local hardware stores don’t carry anything larger, even though I wish they did.
@@SharpWorks Same here. One of the issues i have right now is I'm 50/50 on keeping a smooth flat surface when I start working a blade, get those little hammer ding marks on my flat surface. Any advice? Sure it comes with practice and time.
Ozone The Great I would suggest lighter hammer swings when you get near your desired size. I also heard that if you do light hammer blows while the steel is cooling it’ll help even out those dimples, but I haven’t had enough practice myself to know for sure.
@@SharpWorks Makes sense and I figured it was hammer control issues. I got a bench grinder and that helped get rid of them. Thanks for the advice!
Ozone The Great Anytime! I love my bench grinder. It was the first power tool that I got for knife making and I love it for rough profiling. Good luck with the craft!

One time I had twenty dollars in my pencil case to buy lunch with.I was only 11 at the time and twenty bucks was a lot for me.Any way we had science and I was doing a worksheet.I was at a table sitting with my 2 friends.There was also another boy who wasn’t really my friend but he got moved to our table for talking.Any way halfway through my worksheet I caught the boy(whose name was Dylan) taking my money out.I thought it was just a joke and I took it back from him.After I finished my worksheet I started to pack up for lunch when I realised the twenty was gone.I knew it was Dylan but he Denied it.My other friends could have never taken it cuz I would’ve saw.I was facing them.The bell rang and Dylan just ran out the door.I searched everywhere there was no chance of me dropping it.For lunch I starved because I didn’t have any food.Ever since I just avoided Dylan.I knew he took it.Looking back I should’ve put the twenty in my pocket but I didn’t.I even thought about taking my money back from his wallet he left on the table a couple of times.But I couldn’t.I didn’t want to be thief and make someone else starve either.Its almost 3 years ago.I don’t know what to do
