you are the first smith i have ever seen draw the design on the anvil like that. ive seen many use paper or even a concrete floor but right there on the anvil is so smart
I have seen almost every Blacksmith make this style of knife as blacksmith knife . But never mention the history. Really That Dutch smith Van De Mankker deserves a shout out and credit for his work
I don't believe there's any evidence of medieval knives looking anything like this. Certainly the museum catalogs I've studied do not contain any knives like this.
@@bjf10 not medieval but far earlier Celtic design Thijs van de Manakkers Facebook page has drawings form surviving pieces, most are a strait tang with a small loop at the end 1 or 2 are with the well know loop as shown here
I love making these! You make it look really easy though! It really takes me a couple of hours to make one. I always fiddle around with the length of the handle instead of doing it the way you did it. You left it long and just cut off the excess after bending, that worked out great! I also liked that you used thicker stock to begin with, I think that will sit in the hand better than the ones made of thinner stock! Great work as always! Cheers from the USA
@@stevesyncox9893 I say this only from an aesthetic point of view. already has a hole in the handle and I like the construction. Of course, if you don't like Karambits ...
Nice job friend, I swear by my statement to anyone I speak about knives to, the knife is by far the most important tool man ever invented and possibly was the first, Primarily used for hunting then as we got "smarter" it was used for more nefarious purposes like hunting each other, still the basic shape and basic use hasn't really changed from paleolithic/neolithic times, and it's great to see a master craftsman like yourself making these tools, keep up the good work 👍
You've got to be kidding me! I came up with a damn near identical design the other day. Turns out it must have come straight from the blood of my ancestors. Great looking knife! Regards from the north
I appreciate when I stumble on a forging video and the person is ACTUALLY forging and not just cutting a knife out of steel with the stencil they used for their shape and design. Bloody well done! :)
Love the sound of that forge igniting, the muted bell clang of the hot steel hammer blows on the anvil. PS....worthy of all anvil work. Ragnar, Lagertha, Bjorn, and Floki would be competing vigorously over this knife.
I am curious to know where you learned the origins of this knife from. I've spent some time trying to find out more about this style of knife (it is usually referred to most often times as a blacksmith knife by smiths, at least in the u.s. anyways) and I can't seem to find any info whatsoever :/
That is a beautiful knife there sir. The title is misleading though. That's no simple knife there. I've watched plenty of forging videos so I know that Damascus steel is no easy trick. It takes a lot of effort to make it happen. The knife is a real piece of fine art that is usable though. Great job!!!!!!! I hope one day to be able to do such a project myself. As it is I am just now starting out in my black smith endeavors but I hope to get where you are currently at one day
I have two questions. 1st what kind of mask is that? Looks similar to a fireman mask to me but not sure. 2nd what's with putting the piece in what I believe is a kiln? I've seen a few people do it and I've asked before but have yet to be informed on why. Thanks
Probably a tempering oven. After quenching, steel is super-hard and brittle, so he heats it moderately for a prolonged time to soften it a little. This way it will handle more abuse and be easier to re-sharpen when necessary. They never show this on Forged in Fire -- maybe because it's the boring part.
It took so many soaks in heat cause your taper was forged on the wronge part of the anvil could save your self many hours on the forge by either learning or relearning to taper but your finish work is very good
In my lifetime I've seen literally hundreds of these knives. This one is by far the nicest. Veddy good job
Definitely the nicest version of this blade that I've seen 👌
In the description you comment on it's a modern styling of a historical piece, but in your hands it's a timeless classic.
you are the first smith i have ever seen draw the design on the anvil like that. ive seen many use paper or even a concrete floor but right there on the anvil is so smart
Amazing work of art, this twist on the blade characterized his work. Congratulations!

Look at all that *hand* forging, amazing!
I’ve yet to see ya do a “bad” piece. If you’ve made any mistakes, you covered it well lol. You’re a true artist with steel, sir. Cheers from 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beautifull piece, great hands
you sus sus
no way
One hint: Acid
Beautiful blade. Outstanding craftsmanship. Love watching your videos.
This looks interesting. I can learn some good ideas from your videos too. Thank you and keep up the good work
so much time and effort on perfection...
truly most of us don't know ..
thanks for sharing..
Very cool, I like the way the twist turned out!!! Keep it up good Sir!!! 💪🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Beautiful simplicity!
The nicest version of this blade that I've seen. Well done.
es Increíble las cosas que se pueden lograr con un pedazo de metal e ingenio, creo que es una de las cosas más simples lindas que eh visto
I love that style knife with the tang bent around as part of the handle!
Very good craftsmanship
That is a beautiful knife, great work!
Am going to be making this in my black smithing class so I'm learning ahead of time thanks mate
Extremely awesome! So well done!!!
I love your work Blacksmith
Wow, marvelous craftsmanship!
Que precioso trabajó . Felicidades
Cool project! I think knowing when to stop working it so it retaines the "viking" in your finished product is a matter of faith
Absolutely Awesome, pure Class , Skill & craftmanship, Fantastic

Cool blade man. I think I’ll do one similar. Thanks man. Danke
Best i have seen of one of these i like how you didn't put it in the ferric chloride for to long which gave your knife a beautiful faint damascus
I love this design! I want one!
Excellent example of craftsmanship 🏴
excellent interpretation of a classic! I imagine what a Karambit made in this style would be like. it would make a beautiful hybrid!
Kirk Mario no, it wouldn’t.
Karambits are useful if you like a self-limiting knife. Name one nation that conquered the world with a recurve-style blade...
@@stevesyncox9893 I say this only from an aesthetic point of view. already has a hole in the handle and I like the construction. Of course, if you don't like Karambits ...
I don’t like hybrids, only my opinion, likely came across a bit harsh. Was not the intent. Mind typeclik. Peace man.
150 person don't recognize talent when they see it. This is gorgeous and every piece that I've seen so far.
That’s why I love this channel’ always something unique and different:)
Excellant work as usual!!
Love watching that metal move under your hammer, mad skills. Salute!
Never seen a vise rigged up like that to be a touchmark press, I like it and might have to borrow the idea!!
Great knife design always thought the same as you on its timeline.
Awesome work Mate, I wish I had you skills. 👍
Absolutely beautiful work!
Superb craftsmanship ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great work there!!! 👍

Für mich der beste Klingenschmied auf YT !! Nebenbei, überhaupt ein begnadeter Handwerker.
That's a gorgeous knife
WOW, WOW, FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU. BEST REGARDS FROM CANADA

Great looking knife!

this is the best knife I've ever seen
Sir, you are so masterful at making knives, and swords. It wouldn't suprise me to find that you sweat razor blades!
Nicely done I like the design
Perfectly Beautiful!

i love that handling
The line it a beauty
This is a Beautiful blacksmith knife.
Muito bom! Parabéns pela habilidade.
Why not weld a bar to the wrench so you can twist with both hands and keep even rotation on the twist?

There are some historical finds that look like it but not the same.
Que buena versión .gracias por el video
What a workshop! Damn
The Blade is 5 inches?

I always like your job and cteation sir...your knifes is beautiful and heavy...tebal dan cantik..
After quenching the blade. Why is it necessary to put the blade in an oven? Is there anyway to do that same process without the oven?
You can use a kitchen oven also
