When I was a kid I wanted to make a grappling hook to mess around with. I used an old BernzOmatic mapp gas torch to bend up some rebar then welded it with a little buzz box my friends dad owned. After I'd bent the tines of the hook I shoved them in water to cool faster and did the same after the welding. I had no idea about heat treating steel so I never imagined it could be bad to rapidly cool steel. Anyway after I'd spent a few hours on my creation I tied a rope on it and gave it a swing and toss. On the first toss two tines snapped off right were I heated the bar to bend it. I tossed it a second time and broke off the other two. All the work I'd put into it was wasted.

Hey there beetle, I'm a fellow blacksmith as well, I've been blacksmithing for about 13 years now and have made many Rebar swords knives, gutting hooks, and many other things. One thing I have found that works extremely well is to heat the Rebar until its a cherry red and then drop the metal into a bucket of Vermiculite and leave it to anneal overnight, really helps, makes the steel nice and soft and really easy to work with, it can be re-tempered later with no effect to the carbon composition

I'm a machinist and have made many edged tools. You are doing this the hard way. Use a more course file at the beginning and work your way down to a finer file. That will save a lot of time. My favorite item I've made is my own straight razor. I made it out of part of a lawn mower blade. I've shaved with it every day for ten years.
I admit I was very skeptical watching this video. Just seeing the title say "no anvil" I was like what? But you really made something cool. Something made even better by the fact that you used such simple tools to do it with. I think this is a very inspiring video for those with little resources or tools. And I think the knife turned out great! Good on you for making a simple, clean, no frills knife. So I just want to say thanks for doing this and for showing all of us that this can be done if you just take a bit more time and have a little imagination. Take care, Josh
+Green Beetle Cool vid bro.....you could(or others if using wood as an "anvil"), add water to the wood, or soak the end u use in a bucket of water ....it wont burn the wood.....ure disclaimer is funny ...hope you just said it for the lulz' =D .....cause forging is one of the most safetest craft ever.....such as paiting ......(of course if you are a moron and pick up a red out of the forged steel, most probably your skin from the hand will peal of, but youl recover and be normal again, compared to woodworking where you can loose some meaty components

if you need an anvil for a project and dont want to buy one, try getting a piece of railroad track. around 12 to 18 inches long and it will work just as well.
+stephen geisel Railroad track needs to be hard and elastic to minimise rolling friction - it's why rail transport is as efficient as it is. Does having trains run over the rails for years alter the steel?
Depending on were you live you can find it at steel recycling facilities. You can also find it online as well. You can also find used anvils on Craigslist as well.
Wow! You are really very experienced in what you are doing. I tried to make a knife in the open air last summer ... bad idea! Later I went back to the craft room and filed and sanded by hand like crazy. You see, the approach is right. Watching your videos brings back some of the calm that I found in this beautiful process. crappy anvil would work better but the rock is free. crappy anvil has significant limitations in the long run. save your money and watch craigslist for a hardened anvil.
For how you made it, the tools you used and the mistakes you stated, it turned out to be a beautiful looking knife! Regardless of any flaw, it not keeping sharpness, not even or what ever! You have to be proud of producing that! Wonderful piece of craftsmanship there!
+Devin Velasquez I poke fun at safety a bit in the video but the truth is I've burned myself significantly several times and it's no joke. Wear eye protection, thick welders gloves, long sleeves, etc. Get assistance if you need it. I strongly encourage using a long enough piece of rebar you can heat and forge one end while safely holding the other. 2 feet or so? Having control over the metal you're working on will make things much easier. Then, be patient and have fun.

+Devin Velasquez There are many substitutes for anvils like a rock, railroad track, weights, sledge hammer head. If you don't have a vise to clamp the work for filing you can use an F-clamp or C-clamp and clamp it to a work table top so that it hangs out over the edge of the table. Gough Custom's youtube channel demonstrates an easy to make filing jig for knife making that's popular. Or if you can get an $80 1x42" sander from harbor freight that would knock a lot of time off the project as well.
Never drag a file backwards across your work unless you like having a dull file. You could have found a old sledge hammer in a flea market or post apocalyptic world to use as an anvil.
Co1byJack The good folks at Nicholson File the ones who make files would disagree with you. "On the reverse stroke, it is best to lift the file clear of the work piece, except on very soft metals. Great video, I like it when there's narration to it and not music. I liked it and subscribed. If I can add an additional mistake, when using a file you only move it in one direction. Never use it in a sawing motion.
This was really interesting. Through the whole thing, I couldn't help but think of the scene in The Hunted, where one character is forging a knife out of junk, and the other character is making his knife out of flint. I'd hate to have to do that in time to make it to a knife fight! Thanks for taking the time to share your projects.

I think this was a very cool experiment. I don't blacksmith nor do I have any inclination to do so but I love to watch it. Especially when people are trying new things such as this. I picked up a railroad spike knife from a guy a long time ago and it's one of my favorite things. Wouldn't mind adding a rebar knife to the collection ;) Even if it's not the best material for knife making.

I watch this video a few times, I have all the tools you have in this video. I have absolutely zero experience and forging or nice making. Having said that, this inspires me to have a go of it. Why the heck not.
All rebar is case hardened so one needs to take this into consideration when reheating and reshaping etc. But that's why, softer in the middle and hard on the outside makes rebar function for it's intended purpose.So you will get that sparking but the middle part of the rebar is a much lower carbon content. Nice video.
Cool Vid, Make ya think about what it would take to forge a blade with minimal resources. Of course The Movie " The Hunted " comes to mind. Tom Browns Tracker Knife. I saw some one sink a piece of Rail Road Track into a Bucket of Concrete. I might try that for kicks. Failing is Learning ie' school sucks.

An axe head in a stump works as a great make-shift anvil, plus works better than a rock. This is just a constructive side note... nothing else. Love the video keep the helpful information coming :)
Very cool idea. Wish I had the time, and space for it and the material. I would get my metal from where I find it on the streets. I collect trash like that and repurpose it if I can. Made and arrow head from a spoon only using a framing hammer, tin snips and a file courtesy of corporal corner. Thumbs up.
Great vid man , I've used re-bar as a practice steel a few years ago and treated in my kitchen with much the same result good fun and great to learn with as it free from most construction sites lol

I would imagine so. I am also an iron worker. Pressure and friction can cause heat. I have also used a piece of track for a makeshift anvil.

Take your ShopVac and switch the hose from the suction side to the exhaust side. This will make a much better blower than your ol' lady's hairdryer.

I think it was a wonderful project ! especially considering its just a piece of rebar and yes the marks give it character and let's who ever used it know wow a simple piece of rebar turned into this ! loved it brother

There's no anvil used.
+Green Beetle the vice you used is also as a anvil.
He only used an anvil to test a different piece. He didn't use an anvil to make the knife.

I think this was a very cool experiment. I don't blacksmith nor do I have any inclination to do so but I love to watch it. Especially when people are trying new things such as this. I picked up a railroad spike knife from a guy a long time ago and it's one of my favorite things. Wouldn't mind adding a rebar knife to the collection ;) Even if it's not the best material for knife making.

I watch this video a few times, I have all the tools you have in this video. I have absolutely zero experience and forging or nice making. Having said that, this inspires me to have a go of it. Why the heck not.
All rebar is case hardened so one needs to take this into consideration when reheating and reshaping etc. But that's why, softer in the middle and hard on the outside makes rebar function for it's intended purpose.So you will get that sparking but the middle part of the rebar is a much lower carbon content. Nice video.
Cool Vid, Make ya think about what it would take to forge a blade with minimal resources. Of course The Movie " The Hunted " comes to mind. Tom Browns Tracker Knife. I saw some one sink a piece of Rail Road Track into a Bucket of Concrete. I might try that for kicks. Failing is Learning ie' school sucks.

An axe head in a stump works as a great make-shift anvil, plus works better than a rock. This is just a constructive side note... nothing else. Love the video keep the helpful information coming :)

Great idea making the ground-forge :) I'm gonna try that for melting aluminum. My furnace broke up after 4 melts :(
Very cool idea. Wish I had the time, and space for it and the material. I would get my metal from where I find it on the streets. I collect trash like that and repurpose it if I can. Made and arrow head from a spoon only using a framing hammer, tin snips and a file courtesy of corporal corner. Thumbs up.
Great vid man , I've used re-bar as a practice steel a few years ago and treated in my kitchen with much the same result good fun and great to learn with as it free from most construction sites lol
It turned out better than I thought it would.
Does the knife cut, poke, slice, scrape, stab, scar, flay, gore, bore or generally mangle? If so, it's a good knife. ;-)
